TJC's band was not that great. I went to school there for a brief time. They just thought they were all that. TVCC on the other hand.....band is AWESOME...went there for two years.

mrse0706... when exactly did you go to TJC? It sounds like you haven't seen them in a while. I have absolutely no affiliation with the Apache band, but I have to admit they are awesome... much better than TVCC.

TJC traveled out of the country last year - Germany. They played several concerts including entertaining the military troops. If I am not mistaken they took "goody bags" with phone cards etc. . . . to some of the injured.
Trips prior to that include China, Ireland where they marched in the St. Patricks Day Parade, Washngon, D.C. where they marched in the Cherry Blossom Parade, Hawaii where they performed at Pearl Harbor.
They have performed for many US Presidents including the past six. I also believe the Whitehouse Rose Garden was started after a TJC trip and gift of Tyler roses to President Johnson.
The TJC band has performed at NFL games including a super bowl. They have performed for Spurs and Mavericks NBA games.
Where did TVCC go last year? What has the TVCC band done for military troops? How many presidents have they played for?
You better do your homework before you bash TJC band. We love our Apaches!

What does TVCC have in their band...40...maybe 65?
Compare that to over 200? (Which might explain why scholarships are aplenty at TVCC...fewere folks to spread the wealth)...
From what I read, you must have had issues when you were at TJC...must have gotte kicked out or something...or thought you were a better performer than you really are...and remember - people can find out the "truth."

Wow, I've joined this conversation a little late but I feel that I needed to give my input for anyone in the near future.
I'm a member of the TJC Band for my 2nd year.
As far as sound, there is no way TVCC compares to TJC. The Punch drumline is one of the best according to WGI. Many of the members of the Apache Punch Drumline have marched in Drum Corps International. The center tenor player marched with the World Champion Cavaliers.
The TJC hornline is one of the strongest around. In recent years, the marching band has been said to be better than even SFA, a 4-year univesity! A friend of mine who had transferred to NSU said that the TJC Tuba Line (12) is louder than that of NSU (24). Thats why NSU openly accepts Low brass from TJC.
It's funny when TVCC tries to call out TJC and they get completely destroyed by TJC's sound. TVCC, comeback when we can actually hear you.
As far as scholarships go, and this is for mrse0706:
Of the 200+ members that are in the Apache Band this year, only maybe 5 are not on a scholarship. And this scholarship covers 12 semester hours, which means that any member on scholarship is payed to be a full-time student. The 5 that are not on scholarship are so because they take the primary amout of their classes elsewhere (UTT, TC), but even still they are payed for their band classes at TJC.
And thank you to baseballfan for explaining all the different accomplishments of the band. The one thing I'd like to add is that TJC has been playing the Region 21 Marching Contest and last year's and next year's Area C Marching Contest. WHERE WAS TVCC? I'LL TELL YOU... NOWHERE!

As someone closely associated with NSU I can tell you that your friend is making things up...or exagerrating rather. Louder than 24 tubas? come on. I have seen the Demon Band every year for the past 10 yrs and that band just gets better and better every year. Especially with their new marching band director who is taking the band in a whole different direction than the previous...new music, more marching and balance along with power. Also, NSU does not openly accept anyone...everyone has to audition for a scholarship just like at any other university.
Now, let me say this. I can recall when I was in h.s.(Whitehouse) the TJC Band was maybe about 50 members in size and there wasn't much to it. But within the past few years it has become a very good marching band and I have been impressed with the videos on youtube. Right now I would say it would give SFA a run for their money and possibly might even put the hurt on the LMB.

The reason I know this is because I know the section leaders of the Tuba section at NSU. I've either went to high school with them or they themselves transferred from TJC. Also I ment it as lining up tuba section to tuba section, not the entire band.
Yes of course you have to audition like any other band (NSU) but what i was getting at was that TJC is the stepping stone to NSU because we as musicians grow while at TJC and NSU-TJC relations are so good that most after auditions are in.
Bill Brent is an awesome director. I in his Honor's Band Program in the summer of 06 and had a blast down at NSU for the weekend. Unfortunately word is that he will be leaving the school within the next few years. and when he goes so does alot of his staff.

TJC-NSU relations are pretty good. I got a chance to meet the drum instructor when he judged the NSU contest and he seemed like a cool guy and knows his stuff.
As far as Mr. Brent goes, yes he is nearing retirement age but from someone who speaks to him on usually a weekly basis his staff isn't going anywhere. Please help to dispell that "rumor". That is exactly what people from other surrounding universities want people to hear. When he does retire it will be a very crucial decision selecting who his replacement will be and to insure that everything he built since 1984 isn't gone to waste there will not be a mass exodus by the music dept. professors. No reason to leave when things are going so well.
If you were in the summer honors wind ensemble in '06 you may have met my brother...he played trombone the past 2 summers in that group.

What you are hearing is just people speculating. It is human nature to wonder what is going to happen when such an influential person retires.
His staff, Kevin Richardson(marching band director & asst. dir. of bands) and Ken Green(percussion instructor & asst. dir.) aren't goin anywhere for a long time.

Sounds to me you are just hacked off b/c you didn't get any scholarship money......I haven't seen them (TJC) march, but I have heard them practice. For a JUCO band, they are pretty good. I marched at Baylor. TJC reminded me alot of my band. Not too big, but they (TJC) carry a big sound.

A VERY GOOD player in high school? Really? Well, that must certainly qualify you to be able to talk smack about a college program, simply b/c they didn't give you money. Which is kinda interesting in itself. Why, if you were so good in high school, didn't they give you any money? (or not enough) Could it be that maybe you weren't as good as you thought you were? My friend was 2nd chair all-state Tuba (5A level) and only recieved a partial scholarship from Baylor. That is being stingy. You might just want to chill on bad mouthing a program b/c you are pouting about your money or lack there of.

I got a scholarship at TJC and I completely ######ed up my mallet piece but I saved it with my snare piece.. any other college would have chosen to not give me money to play there.. So, yeah, not to stingy..

TJC's band is a fantastic opportunity for those who played in high school and want to keep going for 2 reasons:
1.) you could line them up with a lot of 4 year universities and not even know that they were a JUCO band.
2.) They are able to provide an incredible amount of scholarships to those who want to pursue a college degree that wouldn't otherwise be able to afford it, especially to those who live in the East Texas area.
My only complaint against the TJC band program is that they only march one show per year. with the quality of the musicians in the program, there is no reason that they couldn't learn 2 or even 3 shows each season to mix things up. Many of the good D-1 college bands march at least 3 shows per football season (OU and UT march new shows at every home game). The Apache band is good enough that there really isn't a reason why doing more than 1 show per season would be an overly difficult task for them.

I'm a member of the TJC Band (without a scholarship might I add) and it is the exact opposite of "a waste of time." So far in my three months being there my musical ability has grown tremendously, and I competed at the Area and State levels in high school. It is a great program to be involved with and to say that being a member is a "waste of time," would be an insult to everyone who is and has ever been a part of the program, not to mention the dedicated staff that makes everything happen. Along with all of those people, I am PROUD to be a part of the Apache Band. So you just need to get over whatever little thing it was that ticked you off, and have a little respect for the hard work and dedication of an excellent program.
