With tryouts right around the corner, I just wanted to know what some of the schools qualifications were to be named the Head Cheerleader or Captain. At our school, we name co-captains on our JV and varsity squads. You must be a senior to be a varsity co-capt. and for JV it is usually a junior. If there are no juniors then it will be sophomores and so on.

Well, that meant this past year, we had a co-capt. on varsity that was an alternate on varsity the year before just because she was a senior. For the JV we had a co-capt. that had never been a cheerleader before just because she was one of only two sophomores on the squad.

Shouldn't scores, experience, leadership capabilities, grades, teacher recommendations, etc. have something to do with who gets these positions of leadership?

Just wondering what other schools did?

At my daughters school, they completly cut out the need for "head cheerleader" or captian, I think the last year at their school for one was 2002 or 03, It is still in the constitution book that the head cheerleader be picked by the members who make the cheer squad. But with all the bickering, and I think the last "head cheerleader" ruined itf for those who would have not let it go to their head.
My own opinion is that it should be the cheerleader with the highest score on the score sheet, because then he/she has proven they have the ability, and also grades should be a factor, and then have the girls on the squad do a vote.
