A question for coaches...

Just curious...How does a regional seeding meeting work? and how are seeds decided?

Obviously someone is going to be seeded above those they have beat in the past. But what if a player hasn't played anyone else in the bracket?

Not a coach, but historically not seeded. Is my understanding you can not use USTA ranking. That is why it is so important to play tournaments against schools within your region. The results from the fall and spring are considered.

I know in Texas High's district, Texas High & Lindale search out competitive tournaments to sharpen their skills and for seeding purposes. Their kids are known my coaches from Corsicana, Ennis, Waco Midway, Frisco, etc.. Schools like Sulphur Springs, Mt Pleasant, North Lamar, & Paris rarely play "up" and out of their local area.

honestly i just hope i don't play the district 10 team first. pearce and hp, solid. however i do think some region 2 events are weaker this year than in the past. there are many opportunities for kids in e. texas to go a couple rounds.

so i accually asked my coach today what they do at a seeding meeting without knowing this was on here n this is what he told me coaches nominate the people for seeds say girls singles once that is done they each share why they should be seeded with records or usta ranking i believe they have an impact on seeding after this the coaches that have representatives in the girls singles division are allowed to vote on seeds 1-4 only the coaches that have players from their school playing in girls singles can vote on the seeds so if a coach brought just a boys singles player he/she is not allowed to have any say on the girls singles seeding smile.gif

well actually its illegal to use USTA rankings at the...seeding meeting (which is my fav. phrase in all of h.s. tennis)... but i'm sure it plays some part. i didn't know that part about what coaches can vote? are you sure?
superchamp09
yeah thats at least what my coach told me i have no clue as why they do it like that but you have to have a representative in the division your voting on n usta ranking may be "illegal" to use but im sure if your coach said oh they are ranked what ever in the state it would weigh in that other coaches minds

Coaches vote on the seeds. I think it would be fun to have a seat atthe seeding meeting. I understand it can be quite entering. USTA is not supposed to be used. The only time the USTA enters the tournament are the umpires used to control the matches.

Can you tell this is a text message generation? How about a period every once in a while. Those are two pretty impressive run-ons.

burn:whome:. even though the text message generation isthe best generation... ever! haha that's another thread. But, this fall at regionals i evesdropped on the seeding meeting (what can i say, i was bored). It was very entertaining. I love how some coaches push around others, its just like politics.

I attended a coaches meeting for regionals last year (my first one). It wasn't too bad, but you could tell that coaches voted in cliques. No USTA info was brought up - not that unusal for 1A. Most of my experience with regional tennis has been with the 2A regional in Tarleton. Always liked the way he did it - you sent in the info, and he seeded the tournament. This year, I've noticed, Tarleton is doing a seeding meeting. It will be interesting.

Now, as far as the USTA info...I've never seen anything about using USTA info as being illegal. On the rare occasion that I could, I included that info with my seeding information that I faxed. But, like I said, I've only been in one seeding meeting and USTA never came up. Here is the UIL handbook excerpt regarding seeding at the regional meet:

"Seeding. The regional tournament director has two options for making the draw: 1) draw by lot; 2) seeding. Regardless of the procedure used, the directors should place the first place winners and the second place winners from the same
district in opposite brackets.
OPTIONS
1) Draw. The director will draw the names of the players and put them on the unoccupied lines of the bracket in the
order in which they are drawn, starting at the top of the bracket and moving downward in sequence. As previously
stated, the director should place the first and second place winners from the same districts in opposite brackets.
2) Seeding (in accordance with the USTA). The tournament director/committee is allowed to seed players at a
maximum ratio of one seed for every four players (e.g. with eight players, seed two players; with 16 players,
seed four players). The ratings must be justified by a reasonable amount of factual evidence. Once the seeds are
established, every seeded position is determined by lot (i.e. Flip a coin to see if the number 1 seed goes on line 1
or line 16, number 2 goes on the other and flip to see if number 3 goes on number 5 or number 12; then number 4
goes on the remaining line.). After the seeded players (and byes if applicable) have been written in, fill in the rest
of the draw by drawing names of the remaining players and putting them on the unoccupied lines in the order in
which they are drawn, starting at the top and moving downward in sequence."

Been to several seeding meetings and have never heard anyone say anything about a USTA ranking. I have heard them mention that their player is a Super Champ. But the main thing is their school record and head to head competition.
