Burke named GM for USA's 2010 hockey team
TSN Staff - Anaheim Ducks general manager Brian Burke has added Olympic responsibilities to his portfolio.

USA Hockey announced on Friday that Burke has been named general manager of the U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team that will compete in the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, B.C.

"I'm very grateful and honoured to be part of the U.S. Olympic Team," Burke said Friday in a statement. "We hope to put a team together for 2010 that Americans can be proud of."

Nashville Predators president of hockey operations and general manager David Poile will serve as associate general manager.

"We could not be more pleased than to have Brian as our general manager," USA Hockey president Ron DeGregorio said in a statement. "His record of accomplishment speaks for itself. Brian's drive and fire for the game rub off on you and it's that type of passion that will help lead us to our ultimate goal of winning the gold medal."

The United States last won a gold medal in hockey in 1980 in Lake Placid. Their best recent result was a silver medal in Salt Lake City in 2002, where they fell 5-3 to Team Canada.

USA Hockey officially names Wilson as Olympic coach
USA Hockey officially named Ron Wilson head coach of the 2010 U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team.

Wilson, the current head coach of the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs, will also serve as the head coach of the U.S. Men's National Team at the 2009 International Ice Hockey Federation Men's World Championship April 24-May 10 in Berne and Zurich-Kloten, Switzerland.

Wilson led the U.S. to the gold medal in the first-ever World Cup of Hockey in 1996 and the second-winningest active coach in the National Hockey League.

"It's no secret that Ron Wilson is one of the best coaches in the game," said Brian Burke, general manager of the 2010 U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey team and also the president and general manager of the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs. "Our national team management group is excited to have Ron lead our team in Berne and Vancouver. He brings passion, energy, and an overall knowledge of the international landscape to the table that is second to none."

Wilson has been the head coach of five different U.S. teams, was an assistant coach once and also played on five U.S. teams.

"Needless to say, it is quite an honor to have the opportunity to coach our Olympic team in Vancouver and also our team in the upcoming World Championship," said Wilson, who will become only the fourth person to lead two different U.S. Olympic men's ice hockey teams. "I've enjoyed my involvement enormously with USA Hockey over the years, both as a player and coach, and look forward to the challenge ahead."

USA Hockey made the announcement on its website this morning and will introduce him as its coach to the media in a teleconference later today.

Tonight, Team USA won the Gold Medal in the Under 17 Challenge Cup against Canada. It was the first time since 2002 that the USA brought home the Gold Medal.

This marked the 2nd Gold Medal this year that Team USA has won so far, with the United States also winning the 2010 IIHF World Junior Championship.

While they're obviously not the favorites at the Olympics, an upset by the Americans would mark the first time they've ever pulled off the triple Gold. It really is a testament to how much the game has grown ever since the college kids won it in '80. It was only the 3rd time ever Team USA won the U-17 Challenge tournament and only the 2nd time to pull out the Gold in the World Junior Championship.

Hopefully, with the younger talent on Team USA this go around, they'll be able to pull off another shocker. The talent to do so is definitely there. I can't wait to the see the roster for the 2014 Olympics. Man, it's going to be loaded.

QUOTE
The Ducks' leading scorer sprained his left ankle during the second period and left the arena wearing a boot and on crutches. An MRI is scheduled for Tuesday.

Sounds like a huge loss for Team Canada is if initial reports are true.

I would think they would call up either Richards or St. Louis if Getzlaf isn't able to go next week.

Younger? Certainly. Better? That remains to be seen.

A decidedly more-youthful version of Team USA hits the ice Tuesday against Switzerland in the first men's hockey game at the Vancouver Olympics.

It could be said that fielding a younger team was a necessary change, and recent history bears that out.

Eight years ago in Salt Lake City, players like Brett Hull, John LeClair and Mike Modano helped the Americans win silver, ending a medal drought that stretched back to the "Miracle on Ice" team in 1980. The squad in 2006 featured much the same core, including grizzled veterans Chris Chelios, Bill Guerin, Keith Tkachuk and Doug Weight.

With a wealth of experience -- and an average age pushing 32 -- the Americans looked worn out and finished eighth in Turin.....(read rest by clicking link^^)
