My Dad was telling me he thought he saw a wolf and I just had trouble envisioning what he saw. I put out a trailcam over a gutpile and here is what I got. So ---- What is it?

Hmmm. I hear old-timers tell me there are wolves around. Who knows. If that's a coyote, he has sure been frequenting a lot of gut piles. He's thick and appears tall. However, It's hard to tell for sure without a landmark to compare him by and not knowing how far he is away from the camera.

You are correct about landmarks etc. The canine is around 15 to 20 feet from the camera behind a fallen tree trunk. I know the setup and it is even hard for me to judge the size -- other than I know he looks larger than a run of the mill coyote. What intrigues me is the color variation between the top half and the lower half of the animal. I have never seen that on a coyote. But he does have a coyote looking snout but to me his ears don't look like a coyote and his upper head looks wider than a standard coyote.
I'm out of gutpiles. LOL! But will try to get some photos later on if possible. My Dad has seen a group of three and swears they are a red wolf. Red wolves are supposed to only be in captivity now but I think maybe some crosses may still be roaming the woods in East Texas.?

Hard to tell from this pic. I would say Wolf based on size/color. We have land on the river bottom near Frankston and we hear wolves all the time. They are definately in the area. We have seen large canine tracks (Dad is a Vet and believes it to be wolf) and lose a couple of calves every year in pastures with multiple ######'s. The ######'s usually have no problem keeping Yotes off the calves. We have never seen one, but we know they are there.

It's just a big coyote. I have a friend with a full body mounted coyote that you absolutely would not believe unless you saw it. However, it's still just a coyote. I've got some buddies that love to spotlight hogs, coyotes, rabbits, coons, ect., and if there were any wolves in east texas they would have shot a truckload of them already.

I hunt in the Jefferson area and have seen a wolf while hunting. Tried to take a shot but he winded me. Also my neighbor who works for the state was called out one night last month to an accident where a woman hit a wolf on hwy 154 east of Gilmer. He has pics of it hanging and pics of its paws, it was big.
