Does anyone know where i can buy some woods ready hunting dogs? Im looking for 2 bay dogs ( plott hounds preferably) wouldnt mind if they were gritty, and a male bulldog weighing around 50 lbs or so.
If anyone can help me out or knows someone that wants to sell some dogs i would greatly appreciate the help. Thanks and Hook'm Horns

I know a lot of hog hunters but they are pretty tight with their good dogs. Try baydogs.com. They have a classified section that a lot of Texas hunters post dogs on quiet often.

I know several guys that hunt around the Elkhart/Grapeland area. I haven't talked to them in a while to see if they had any for sale or not, but they usually do, and if they don't they know where to get some.

We might know the same people. If you are talking about a certain basketball coach that grew up in Elkhart and hunts with his brother in law he doesn't have any for sale, but I know of another guy that raises some pretty good dogs in Grapeland. I will look for his number.
Wish - How much you looking to spend?

Wasn't going to post this, but what the heck. Dogs should not be used to hunt hogs. I've seen it and it's inhumane. They get the hell beat out of them and I'm sure they are sometimes killed. Hogs are easy enough to hunt with a rifle, shotgun or bow. Dogs are not needed.

If you breed them up right they shouldn't get hurt. I know a man that hunts jagdterriers, they are about the size of a big rat terrier and they will bay and hold a hog without getting touched. I walked in to manty a hog with 2 little dogs baying and holding him. I am a dog hunter and enjoy watching my dogs hunt. I do not like seeing my dogs get killed. I had a good coon hound killed over the holidays by a hog that knocked her off of the tree she was treeing on and she never knew what hit her. I am still sick about it.

It is something to see indeed. I do not care for laying a hand on them. I prefer to touch them with lead only!

it doesnt really matter about the price but i would like to stay around a grand or so.
Immortal- I'm sorry you don't like the fact that some people hunt with dogs. If you deck your dogs out in kevlar vest and collars the risk is very little for the dogs ( IF they are trained correctly). some people as urself may self may see it unjust to hunt wild hogs with dogs, but the dogs love hunting and theres nothing like a great hunting dog. Ive been doing it for about 5 years now, and theres not a rush better then dragging a wild boar outta the woods alive. Im sure im not alone on that

Actually, I love to hunt with dogs. I have a Boykin Spaniel that I hunt ducks, doves, and quail with. I just don't like seeing people putting dogs into a bloody fight with a wild hog. I think it's inhumane and unnecessary. I've seen it done, so I do know a little bit about it.
I've killed many a hog without the aid of any dog. Just need a gun and to be a little smarter than the hog.

it takes a rifle to kill a deer it takes balls to catch a hog but anyways it jus gives some folks like us the adrenaline rush by catchin them and bringin em out alive but u cant get that by shootin em

I am the same about them chasing deer, but if they are after the hogs then let them have at it. I will not prevent anyone from killing or catching as many as they can. I just ask that they be respectful enough to ask about coming onto the property!

If you train your catch dogs the right way and deck them out in kevlar, it is not a "bloody fight".... I hunt in and around Grapeland (redtown) and the worst that ever happens is a fang tooth gets broken once in a blue moon. We go in, "hog tie" the hog, trailer him up and sale him to a man (about $100 for a big boar who's not scarred up) and he charges for guided hunts - I would assume some city slicker from the DFW or Houston area then pays to shoot the same hog we caught bare-handed.

Arkansas just passed a law stating that if you are caught shooting someone else's dog you will be tried on felony charges, not a misdemeanor. I think this is in the works in Texas as well. Be careful what you spout off about shooting another man's property.

You might better check your Texas law there db. This ain't arkansas, and in Texas you have the right to shoot a dog and all you need to prove, or rather allege, is that said dog was acting in an aggresive manner towards you. And the location does not matter, you can excercise this right in the middle of a town square. I don't think there is any such law "in the works" as you claim.
BTW, I love dogs and am a dog owner, but I am all for shooting a dog that is a danger to people.

I am going on what I've been told by folks who know more of it than I do. But please share your knowledge, or as you said " I don't think"....meaning you don't know either.
Nothing was ever said about the dog being aggressive towards humans. the guy said that if a dog got on his lease he'd kill him. That is wrong, whether or not the law proclaims it or not.

What I meant was............. if he's caught chasing deer. I'll kill my own hogs and don't need a dog to do it. Besides that, if the dog is not invited on my land he has no right chasing deer or hogs on my land does he.

I can't exactly prove that something is not going to happen, now can I? Basically, I spelled out the current Texas law of which I am very familiar, so I have shared all the knowledge that there is to share. I prefer not to go on stuff I've "heard from some folks."
I never claimed that shooting a dog just to shoot it would be a legal act. However, one merely has to claim the dog was acting aggressively to be in accordance with the statute. My guess is that one of these "hog dogs" that are generally breeds like pits and that are used to fight hogs would likely be aggressive to someone they don't know anyway.

The only time that I will shoot a dog on our lease is if I catch it running deer. That is something that I have never stood for! It cand chase all of th hogs it wants as long as it chases them out of my lease.

That's a big 4 10. He don't belong on my spread. If the dog doesn't watch it, he may find himself like the hogs....that is...with a boat push pole in his hindin so I can hold'em up to eat the acorns of the tree. (u know to fattin them up)
