Does anyone plant summer food plots for deer? If so what do you plant?

I have used Bio Logic in the past. To be honest with you i have not seen many deer at all eating in food plots around here. The only problem with bio logic is price..but if you have a small plot to plant it isn't bad. They have several different blends for summer plots.

I always plant Iron Peas and clover. I have always had excellent luck with these both. SOmetimes the deer will let the peas get a little tall before they dive into them but when they dive into them you will see trails that look like herds of cattle have been coming to them. I personall recomend white clovers. Deer will eat them all but I have the best luck with S1 white clove. It is a little expensive though. It averages 5-8 dollars a pound but a pound of clover seed goes a long way. If you get a group of guys together to then you can go in and buy a 50lb sack for $125.00. I have best luck with clover seed if I buy a package of innoculant from the feed store before I plat it. It helps make it germinate faster and be more productive. The only seed mixture that I have ever planted and had a some luck with is that Buck Forage that Dr. Kroll come out with. It grows well in East Texas and the deer do eat it. I have never had any luck at all with any or the Mossy Oak Products. When it first came out I gave it a try and grew some pretty stands of it. All that I ever seen eat it were rabbits! Ialso make sure to lime and fertilize my plots every year before I plant them. I use the pellitized lime and the standard 13-13-13 fertilizer. I found that soil samples and special fertilizers did not prove to make any better food plots. I will probably start planting the first part of April. That works out great where we hunt and usually carries the deer on to the fall without any problems as long as we plant enough.

That is my 2 cents. Good luck!

Thanks for the information guys. I dropped some soil samples off at SFA Friday. I've never had any done before and figured I would give it a shot. I was going to try one of the "do it yourself" soil tests, but I figured with SFA so close and at $10 a test I'd give them a try. They say they'll not only analyze the soil but tell me what I need to do to as far as lime and fertilizer. I'm thinking about planting between 3 1/2 and 4 acres in about 1 acre plots. I've been looking into soybeans, but I have no idea how much the seed is. I never had much luck with any of the "Deer Mix" seeds on the market. If I can't get my hands on soybean seeds or they are too expensive I'll plant at least a few pinkeye purple hulls. I've looked at clover and decided to wait until next year to try and get into planting them due to the cost of the seed. I may look into the Buck Forage that Dr. Kroll came out with. I've never heard of it before.
