How many underclassmen are returning to varsity for the 2009-10 season? What jv player(s) will have an instant impact on varsity next season?
THEdrpepper
kilgore jv haha
Celtic09
Probably not what the district wants to hear, but Longview girls JV has a few solid freshmen that are Varsity level players but transerred in this year and would not have been eligible to compete on the varsity. As good as they are, there's a lot of youth there that could translate into some big wins in the future.

Longview boys varsity are starting presently 5 sophmores and 1 freshman. Graduate 3 very valuable starters.
Longview girls will be very good.
pushemback
All the freshmen, most of the Sophs and a goodly portion of the juniors.
Soccer454
Chapel Hill girls will be returning all but one starter.
JvilleTribe
Jville girls only had one active senior this year; the other messed up her knee (ACL, we think) in preseason. Most are sophomores and freshmen. We will only have 1 senior next year, but anyone that has ever played us knows she controls the field!
futfan
Pleasant Grove is only losing 2 to graduation.

The Lady Hawks have 4 seniors graduating.

It will be interesting to see how that pans out for Longview over the next few years. It certainly doesn't level the playing field any, but maybe the district will be up to the challenge. Or maybe Longview will move back to 5A in the next re-alignment!

Rumor has it their will be two 4a divisions. Longview would be in 4a division 1 along with other schools that are big but not big enough for 5a. Rumor!!!!!!!!!!!!!
aflopper
If that occurs, it will only be in football.
Celtic09
I would think the next Division breakout for Soccer would be a move to a 3A division.
schoolmarm
Longview has an open enrollment! Maybe enough student will enroll, so they can move back up to 5A! Wishful thinking! Their girls are very good!

there are already 2 divisions in HS football D1 (big school) D2 (little school)
aflopper
I know there are two divisions in HS football. What the UIL is talking about is actually making the districts based on enrollment, for example Longview, Texas High Marshall, Rockwall and another district with smaller schools like Pine Tree, Hallsville, Kilgore and so on.
sfasoccerfan
goodness we aren't even in playoffs yet and we're talking about next years returners. focus people focus people, let's take our a.d.d. meds
catsfan08
Amen! That is what I was thinking the first time I read that post. My goodness.

Would that not be just like another size division? Or would the playoffs still go with all 4a schools, not the divisions?
aflopper
My understanding is that the districts would be made up on size, with the largest be in 1 district as a d1 district, and the smaller schools in their own district as d2 schools. I'm not sure whether 4 teams from each district would still go to the playoffs, but I would guess probably so. Anyway, you would have D1 playoffs and D2 playoffs, the difference is you would know what playoff division you would be in before the season started.

So, the D1 district and the D2 districts would be nothing different than like a 4a district and a 5a district? Correct? So all they are doing is creating another size division such as 1a, 2a, 3a, etc...?
aflopper
Good way of looking at it, and pretty accurate.

Longview will be in a more challenging tournament at the beginning of their season, but lets hope that Longview will be back up to 5A, 4A just isn't tough enough for them.
rednblack
Typical Longview teams would have found the competition adequate in 4A. The current Longview program has benefited from a significant windfall of talent and is peaking. It remains to be seen if the program can stay at this level for the long term.

Longview's administration could have petitioned to remain in 5A prior to the last re-alignment and will have the opportunity to do so prior to the next re-alignment.
aflopper
Longview couldn't petition to stay in 5A because to do so you have to prove hardships exist, mainly travel issues. Travel issues are not a factor since the 4A district they play in requires much less trsveling. With the exception of Texas High, all district games are much closer that Mesquite.

Yes, a big congratulations to Longview on winning the 4A state soccer championship!

No????? icon_eek.gif

I mean, the 4A regional soccer championship!

No again????????? shocked.gif

I meant district championship!?!?!

Huh? shocked.gif

How about just being the best 4A team in Longview? Not that either huh?

Wow, they do need to go back to 5A. It was easier for them there! thumbsup.gif

I think futbolfan was referring to the Longview girls. Coach Yoder definitely has a talented group. It never hurts to have several club players on a team.
dualdellortos
I don't recall seeing Longview's girls at the state tournament, much less winning it, so apparently 4A is ample competition.

Not taking anything away from the Longview HS girls, they had a fine season, but hey, there were four teams that went further than them and another three that went just as far.........
aflopper
The level of competition at the 4A level is very good. None of the Lady Lobo players or parents think they are above anyone. We lost to JJ Pierce in the regional finals, and they were loaded with ODP talent and even 2 national team members. It doesn't matter whether we play 4A or 5A, they girls have to lace up the cleats and play hard, or get beat. Nothing is taken for granted. We are very proud of the team, and their future. I hope the foundation has been set for many good years of Lady Lobo soccer. Most of our parents just enjoy watching each team play hard, hope and pray for a injury free game, and may the better team win.

While this may be generally true, exceptions have apparently been granted in the past. Dallas Carter was allowed to compete in 5A for several years with a 4A enrollment. They dropped to 4A at the most recent re-alignment with an enrollment of 1451 - well under the 5A threshold of roughly 2000. With all the schools and districts in the Dallas area, it's unlikely they could claim a travel hardship.

Having said that, it makes sense for Longview to remain in 4A. It's a more natural fit geographically and allows for development of local rivalries. Some of the football and girls soccer fans may feel they need more competition, but the travel cost and time considerations of the students must be considered as well.

That response earlier about competition was with respect to the girls team not the boy's. We feel our district is very competitive. So dont bash the boys side when nothing was referred to the boys side. It was the girls. I think it goes without saying that last year the team in the boys district was Pinetree. And this year will be interesting, Kilgore looked good at the end of the year as did the jv on both Pinetree and Kilgore.
