Seems Dallas in the fight for another Swede, this time a goalie.

QUOTE
Jonas Gustavsson is 6'2 or 6'3 181 born 10/24/84
His stats this season 33 games 1.97 GAA and a .932% save. Listed as a late bloomer.
The team he is playing on is Färjestad, Brunnstrom's team last season in Sweden.

He recently talked to a Swedish website, claiming that he wants to play for either Toronto or Dallas in the NHL.
LoboFan07
The last team meetings of the season were today. Here's what Heika took notes on..
  • Brenden Morrow said he was preparing to play in the first round of the playoffs, coming off his injury. "I probably would have had to wrestle with the team physician on it, but I had been skating for two weeks and wasn't limited on the ice other than battle drills and had their been a playoff in the future, I would have pushed a little harder and done a little more on the ice, but it wasn't meant to be."
  • Marty Turco said he wants to learn from this season and apply it to future years. He was asked about his contract and said he's not in a position to worry about it. "I've been fortunate to have a great career so far with the Stars and as amicable as I could hope for," Turco said. "All I'm really worried about is this summer and what I can do to get ready to have a great start for next year and start setting our sights on getting back to the playoffs and winning a Stanley Cup."
  • Jere Lehtinen said he needs a physical and mental break this summer, but is prepared to come back strong and healthy next season. He wants to stay in Dallas. "I want to come back, especially being here so long and a season like this, you want to get back and get the team on top again." Lehtinen said. "It's been so great here and we've had a chance every year to go far and this year was a disappointing season overall and I want to come back and be a part of a good team again, a top team."
  • Trevor Daley had his right knee scoped on Thursday and said he'll start rehab in about three weeks and he'll be ready to go next season. He's committed to pushing his game to a higher level and becoming a top-pair defenseman. "I don't think I'm there yet," Daley said. "I have a lot to learn and a lot to grow. I'm looking forward to the challenge of getting there." Daley said that he wants to be more effective on the offensive side of the game. "I need to be physically ready for it, able to get up and down the ice," Daley said. "I had some leg injuries that hampered that and I'm looking forward to being healthy and more confident."

Update on whether Modano will return or not next season...from the DMN.

QUOTE
Mike Modano said he still wanted a month on the beach to ponder his future, but when asked to put a percentage on whether he would return, he said 80-20 in favor of coming back.

Personally, I think he'll be back. Whether he comes back or not, his 2.25 million dollar cap hit still is in affect because he's over 35.

Stars Sign Philip Larsen To Entry-Level Deal
The Dallas Stars announced today that the club has signed defenseman Philip Larsen to a three-year entry-level contract. Larsen was Dallas’ fifth-round selection (No. 149 overall) in the 2008 Entry Draft and spent the 2008-09 season with Frolunda in the Swedish Elite League.

Larsen, 19, collected 17 points (2 goals, 15 assists) and 18 penalty minutes with a +7 rating in 53 games with Frolunda this season. He led all club defenseman in plus/minus, and among Frolunda blue-liners, placed second in assists and third in points. Larsen’s head coach at Frolunda last season was Ulf Dahlen, former Stars assistant coach.

In 2007-08, the 5-11, 185-pound defenseman skated in 16 games with Frolunda, collecting two penalty minutes. He added 10 points (5 goals, 5 assists) in 24 games with Boras in the Swedish second division that season.

A native of Esbjerg, Denmark, Larsen became the first Danish defenseman to ever be selected in the NHL Entry Draft, and just the sixth Dane overall to be drafted. He has represented his country at four consecutive World Junior Championships (2006-2009), as well as the 2006 World Under-18 Championships.

Here's a rumor I just found.

QUOTE
Jonas Gustavsson has chosen the Dallas Stars, but has yet to officially sign a contract.

If it's true, we've found our back up for next season.
LoboFan07
Joel Lundqvist will officially not return.

QUOTE
Joel Lundqvist told a Swedish television outlet today that the Stars have told him they won’t be offering him a contract this summer.

Here's TSN's thoughts on what we should do in the off-season...

I lol'd when I read at the bottom that Brad Richards was on the trade market.

Turco, however, really is.

The Dallas Stars announced today that the club has signed left wing Michael Neal to a three-year entry-level contract. Neal was Dallas’ fifth-round selection (No. 149 overall) in the 2007 Entry Draft, and split the 2008-09 Ontario Hockey League season between Belleville and Sarnia.

Yep, this is James Neal's brother. He's no where near the talent that James is...but Texas Stars bound I'm sure.

Couple of things from today's Dallas Morning News...

QUOTE
Jackson said the team has made its pitch to free-agent goalie Jonas Gustavsson and is allowing him time to make a decision. Gustavsson helped Farjestad win the Swedish Elite League this year and has announced he will sign as a free agent in the NHL this summer. He's spending time with his ailing mother.

Pray and hope we get him. Really need him.

Also...

QUOTE
Jackson said he does not expect to talk with unrestricted free agents Sergei Zubov and Jere Lehtinen until later in the summer. The Stars are preparing for the June 26 draft in Montreal and have yet to set a budget for next season.
LoboFan07
Gustavsson will begin traveling to 4 different NHL cities this week. His trip was delayed due to the illness of his mother.

Not sure what he's in Dallas, but he'll be visiting Toronto, Dallas, Colorado for sure and perhaps San Jose as well.

Dallas and Toronto are still considered the two favorites. And considering we just got one of the guys that was trying to swing Gustavsson to Toronto, maybe that helps us even further.

The draft will probably be the next big day for the Stars. The first round of the 2009 draft is on Friday, June 26th at 6 PM on Versus. Rounds 2 through 7 will be on Saturday, June 27th. Not sure of the time on day 2 but it's early in the morning.

Update on Gustavsson from Heika...

QUOTE
And no matter what anyone writes about Nieuwendyk being the key to the pursuit of Swedish free agent Jonas Gustavsson, Jackson is in control there. He has a velvet touch with kids, and he was the sole reason Fabian Brunnstrom chose the Stars over Detroit or Vancouver. Brunnstrom is good friends with Gustavsson, Stars Swedish scout Johan Garpenlov is a person Gustavsson trusts, and Jackson has been key in allowing those people to communicate with Gustavsson. Gustavsson's mother died in May, so this has been a very tough time. But the goalie who led his team to the Swedish Elite League championship appears to still want to play in the NHL next year, and Jackson will still play a major role in trying to recruit him.

Don't bet against the Stars getting him.
LoboFan07
Dallas has re-signed Matt Climie and Brent Krahn today. 1 year deal for each on a two way contract.

Not sure why they re-signed Krahn but ok....also don't get why Climie was only for one year.
LoboFan07
Problem for Dallas Stars goaltender prospect, Matt Climie....

QUOTE
Matt Climie, a former Bemidji State University and current NHL goalie, pleaded guilty and was sentenced Thursday for misdemeanor theft. Matthew Scott Climie, 26, stole the letter "A" from the sign for the Snowflake Lodge Cafe in downtown Bemidji on Aug. 24 while with a woman, who has not been charged.

Swedish Newspaper today stated that Joel Lundqvist is likely to return to Sweden. No big surprise.
LoboFan07
09' Traverse City prospects tournament is set. It will take place from September 6th through 10th.
Confirmed teams and at least one more team will be added: Stars, Detroit, Columbus, Minnesota, New York Rangers, St Louis and Atlanta

Dallas won it last season.
LoboFan07
QUOTE
Stars coach Marc Crawford was on The Fan 590 this afternoon and indicated that assistant coach Stu Barnes and goaltending consultant Andy Moog are both staying.

Great news that we're keeping Stu.

Pretty sure this means Rick Wilson is out (celebration time)
LoboFan07
Couple hirings for the Texas Stars that happened on Tuesday......

QUOTE
The new American Hockey League affiliate of the Dallas Stars named its coaching staff Tuesday: ECHL coaching standout Glen Gulutzan is the head coach, and long-time Stars minor leaguer Paul Jerrard is the assistant.

Also, Gustavsson visited the Stars facilities yesterday.
LoboFan07
Heika had a talk with Gustavsson's agent....Definitely seems to match our own principles at the moment.

QUOTE
``He's looking at team philosophy and where the team is going and what they are thinking,'' Resnick said. ``This is a decision that's not a one-year decision, it's a long-term decision. We're looking at years two, three, four and five, that's our game plan.''

Still, Resnick said Gustavsson knows the transition could be tough.

``It's tough to be a goalie and it's tough to start off and play 50 games,'' Resnick said. ``He's a very good goalie, but I think the ideal situation is he plays 20 or 25 games, and then moves forward from that.''

Yes please.
LoboFan07
Gustavsson has reportedly stated he will make his decision within the next week.

QUOTE
"The Ottawa Sun reported earlier that the Panthers were hoping to get a first-round draft pick and a prospect in return for Bouwmeester. According to the Sun, Philly, Edmonton, Dallas, Vancouver and Ottawa had made a pitch for Bouwmeester."

The Dallas Stars announced today that the club extended qualifying offers to defenseman Mark Fistric and center Aaron Gagnon. Left wing John Lammers did not receive a qualifying offer.

Teams are required to extend a one-year “qualifying offer” to any current restricted free agent by June 29 in order to receive the right of first refusal or draft choice compensation should that respective player sign an offer sheet with another NHL club. The qualifying offers will expire at 4 p.m. (Central Time) on July 15.

http://stars.nhl.com/team/app/?service=pag...rticleid=432189

Lammers will now become a UFA on July 1st.
LoboFan07
Mark Fistric received a qualifying offer of $715,000 while Aaron Gagnon received an offer of $522,500.

The two have until July 15 to accept the offer.

Gustavsson has said he would make his decision either yesterday or today...and it obviously wasn't yesterday...so we'll hopefully find out today.
