I have decided to buy a 45-70 from my uncle. I don't really need it as I already has a 30-30 that does a great job on hogs I just would like to have a 45-70. I will probably trade it eventually just want to shoot a few hogs with it.

My question is this.

What is the gun you want just to have? One that may not ever get taken out for a real hunt, a gun you just want to have in the cabinet.

Other than my new 45-70 I would have to say it would be a Barrett 50 cal.

I am thinking of getting one of those only because the girlfriend is scared of my Beretta 96D(.40), even though the Beretta is double action only and has no safeties she is still a little intimidated by it. So I was thinking about getting the Judge throwing some .410 shells in it letting her shoot a few boxes through it in different scenarios and that can be her defense gun while I have the Beretta and an old Stevens 311 double barrel for my place. She lives in an apartment with thin walls so I wouldn't feel comfortable letting her use the 45 long colt in it. Plus the .410 will allow more forgiveness in shot placement than the 45 would.

I don't have one yet neither, but will probably be getting one in the near future.

I am with you on this one. I have wanted one of these every since I read the first Article about them in my NRA magazine. Talk about an all purpose hand gun???? I works great for everything from a snake charmer to self defense.

I've got a buddy with a Judge. It's not a bad shooting little pistol. My only advice would be to pattern it on paper with some different .410 loads in it before choosing one for home defense. It throws an extremely wide pattern, so a larger shot size choice would be the way to go.

It does have a wide pattern but not nearly as wide as I thought that it would with such a short barrell! they are making it now with a longer 6 inch barrell and also in a 3 inch chanbering for the magnum .410 loads! That is just unreal to me!

Have you patterned the gun? I have, and I am not knocking the gun, but it shoots an extemely wide, inconsistent pattern.

Let me give you an example: at 10 yrds we shot #6, #7 1/2, and #9 and never busted the egg with over 40 shots(and no it wasn't the shooter). We couldn't even get a true pattern because we couldn't find a board bigger than the 8' by 8' we had.

DO NOT try and shoot small .410 shot out of this gun in a self-defense situation. You will may ###### off your assailant, but you will not take him down. My advice is to shoot the Winchester 2 1/2" buckshot or just shoot the .45 long colts.

I would never use shot that small unless I was using it for a short range snake charmer. They do not patter worth a #### in a .410 shotgun unless you have one with a really good full or extra full choke. I agree that you deffinitely need to use the bigger shot because without the longer barrell that shotgun shells were intended for they can be fairly uselss except for scaring the #### out of someone by pwinting them with pock marks!
