I question how a kid could get Newcomer of the Year if he lettered on Varsity the year before. I thought you had to be a new varsity player to receive that honor.

In my opinion Joel Ramirez from Lindale should have gotten newcomer of the year. This freshman came off the bench and scored 14 goals. He was Lindale's 4th leading scorer; as a freshman that didn't even start until deep in the play-offs. Now all this is not to take away from the skill of the other two players, they were both great, but i still feel as if Ramirez was more deserving.

The young man is a junior this year. He played with whitehouse as a freshman then hurt his knee during a tournament in Arlington when he was playing with the dallas texans early summer before his sophomore year, missed the entire year. Got to play again this year. Can't say if he earned a letter or not his freshman year.

He actually played on the JV his freshman year with a torn ACL. He tore it the summer before his freshman year.

He did play on Varsity his freshman year. I saw him myself. He played with my nephew. You're right he didn't play last year because of injury.

I wonder how the Earning of a Letter is Defined?
I know Freshman that played mostly JV, but some Varsity, and even scored, but didn't get a letter.
How does that work? Is it based on majority playing time?

It is up to the coach.

From what I understand to earn a letter you have to be a participant (play) in a district game on a Varsity team to be considered for a letter from your school.

Every coach has his/her own policy or the athletic department sets the standard per sport. My lettering policy is that a player must play 800 minutes of varsity play in a year and be eligible the entire season. In my opinion, just playing in a few games and earning a letter jacket waters down the award. I believe a player should earn the right to wear that jacket for their school. In order to play 800 minutes in my system you don't have to be a starter but you are contributing significant minutes in most games.
If you use the policy of just playing in a district game then you don't really have a policy. You're pretty much giving every varsity kid a letter. How many varsity players don't get any time in a district game during the season? None, whether they are #1 or #20 on your depth chart they're getting in at some point in those 10-16 games. Heck, I can think of a lot of coaches that bring JV kids up just for certain district games to get them experience or rest starters against a weaker opponent.

I agree with everything you are saying, your rule is a great one!!
I know at CH that no freshman are allowed to letter at all, you can letter from your sophomore year on which I do not agree with at all, my daughter played
every minute of
every soccer game on Varsity her freshman year and couldn't letter until this year!!

what if your player on varsity plays 700 minutes? no jacket?

I believe you have to have a set number as a base from which to start. Mine is 800, which equals 10 full games. I take my teams to 3 tournaments and get my other 15 games in every year. We end up playing around 25-30 games depending on tournament formats and our advancement in those tourneys. Basically they have to play a total of roughly 30-40% of our minutes. If your team only goes to 1 or 2 tournaments and doesn't get the full 21 "games" in then that coach might go with less minutes as a base.
If I have a player that's close to the minutes (100-125 away) then I take into consideration that players role and efforts on and off the field. If they are deserving then I would agree that they earned a jacket. I wouldn't go too much below and that should give that player some extra drive to earn more minutes next year.
