Any word on who got what in this district?

Newcomer of the Year Brittany Arnold - Canton

It looks like they didn't want Van dominating all the post season selections! How does the Freshman Catcher from Van not get any consideration for newcomer of the year? Much more impact on a strong team than what was nominated! I agree with the Cunningham selection but not as a co should have been hers all the way! Just an opinion! As usual politics play the game not the play on the field! thumbsup.gif

Probably bc the Arnold girl was more of an impact at the plate than the Van Catcher. Van Catcher got 1st team Catcher.

I agree you have to do more than just be on the van team and catch the ball to be concidered for newcomer. I believe the Arnold girl had a good glove, speed, and could hit from both sides of the plate.

"just be on the van team and catch the ball to be concidered for newcomer"? How can you get on here and say that? I'm not saying that is all she did. She is a very good catcher and she is my daughter. I am very proud of her. She worked very hard as a freshman to be where she is. She had very good leadership by another good "all state" catcher (her sister) and a very good coach. Arnold got the credit she deserved. Why can't you just leave it at that instead of getting on here spewing trash out like that.

Harris was co-first team catcher from what I heard with the catcher from Canton (Callan).
Is that right.

Not sure on that one? Wish someone would post all results.

Wasn't spewing any trash she is a very good catcher just responding to the other post stating that it was giving to the girl who impacted in multiple areas. If I was out of line I apoligize. The real story is on the 1st team utility player I think the only thing she did was be a pinch runner and play when daddy showed up.

What politics go into picking an All-District team? They are nominated and picked by the coaches. Trust me, everyone earned whatever spots they get, and the coaches know what every player does for their team, this is regardless of what sport is up for nomination (i.e. football, basketball, etc.). All the players on the All-district team are wonderful players. Coaches cannot vote for their own players, only other teams' players. thumbsup.gif

The pick for 1st Team Utility player is an absolute joke. All she did is run bases during district and played out field in two preseason games in front of much more qualified players bc her mom showed up in town to watch. When she did run, she got called out numerous times because she didnt know what to do. That was strickly due to lake of knowledge of the game. Not her fault. Coach gets credit for that. Just bc she is one sec faster that an experienced player on the bench doesn't make her the better choice. Daddy is a football coach at Van. You would think that Taylor Wilson would have goten the nod for Utility player over Burnett. During district Taylor batted, ran and played the field. Go figure?????????????????????

I have always thought that Van fans were respectful and classy. But this year, with comments like this continuosly being made, my opinion is beginning to change. Yes, I'm sure Taylor Wilson was probably just as deserving as the girl who got the award, but who says there wasn't someone on another team who thought they deserved it, and you don't hear them complaining. I don't understand how you can come onto a board like this and rip players and coaches all the time. How do the parents expect for their daughter to be able to respect and give her all for a coach that she constantly hears them bashing?

thumbsup.gif Coach B give it a rest, don't try to make it sound that there are no politics involved or a coaches personal feelings involved about another team or its players. I DO no that politics are involved, and I DO no that coaches let their personal likes and dislikes guide who they vote for or against. Yes you can not vote for your own, but don't try to come on here and say that a coach wouldn't let his opinions get in his or her way! You obviously haven't been involved in this process before! If it wasn't baised in some way then you would have some other way of choosing these awards to take the coaches out of it! Good try though! thumbsup.gif

It is all political...... period. If it were stats alone there would be no "decision". There needs to be changes made and books turned in to "prove up" the nominations. A requirement with a public forum. Stats don't lie people do.

If it comes to turning in the books then there will need to be a class giving on how to score a hit and what an error is. Watched to many ballgames and witnessed many errors that were scored hits.

I have been in on this process far more than you know. Any coach with integrity will vote based on a players performance, not because we like or don't like a player. Trust me, there have been times when we have not wanted to vote for a player because we did not like his attitude, but voted for him because he was deserving of the spot. We know who votes for our players, even though it is not done aloud. You can figure it out, it's not hard. What other coaches see, and what you see are usually two different things. What we see are what players have done against us, and compare that with what they did for all of district play. What fans usually see is when the one they have ties to don't get the recognition that you feel they deserve. I know both of these young ladies, and they are both wonderful girls. Don't act like you know what I am involved in when it comes to these types of selections. Never said that coaches don't do what you are saying, but when it does, that coach usually has it come back on him or her somewhere down the road. Not saying that it should, but I sure that it does.

Lastly, if you think that Burnett got her spot on All-District because her dad is a coach, then you are basically saying that ALL of the coaches in the district felt she deserved it because her dad is a coach. Does not work that way, but nice try! Go to an all-district meeting and see how it actually works.

Stats don't lie
You don't seriously believe that do you?

The best way to fix it would be to have an official scorekeeper that turns in all stats. The only problem is who. The home team could be in charge of the stats, but then you are at mercy of their interpretation of a hit or error. The last thing you want is the UIL coming in to really screw things up. The most qualified person is a coach (of that sport), but a lot teams may not have an extra coach to take care of the books. Or at least have a coach check them between innings. When the AD's meet, they could designate who is in charge of the "official" stats, and then make sure both teams get a copy for their records. Just an idea, but it may not be the right one.

If you weren't so busy "ramblin'" and would actually stop to take time out to study how things are done you'd understand a LITTLE better....(maybe) rolleyes.gif

I can assure you that Coach B (as they stated themselves) has been involved more than you know. thumbsup.gif

BTW--since this IS about the "kids" or rather "young ladies" and NOT about the politics......

GREAT job to Ms. Shelby Harris on gettin' MVP. She's a very deserving young lady!
