Austin —
There may have been people who believed
Ashley Gadson could win a high jump title at the UIL
State Track and Field Championships on Friday, but
Gadson wasn't one of them. She proved herself wrong.

Gadson, a sophomore from Sabine, captured the Class 2A girls
high jump crown at Mike A. Myers Stadium. Gadson cleared
five feet, five inches. Noelle Kubenka of Geronimo Navarro
and Merkel's Carly Szabo also cleared 5-5, but Gadson won
tiebreakers for the title.

Travis Harsch/Special to the News-Journal Sabine's
Ashley Gadson leans her way overthe bar in the
Class 2A girls high jump competition Friday at the
UIL State Track and Field Championships In Austin.
Gadson won the gold medal with a leap of 5-5.

"I don't believe it. This is not real yet," Gadson said. "I was hoping I
could get a medal. Not finish first."

Gadson cleared 5-5 on her first attempt, a one-inch improvement
on her Region III winning height on May 16 in Whitehouse.

What won the state title was Gadson's efficiency in clearing heights
she normally clears. Gadson's tiebreaker over Kubenka was clearing
5-2 in one attempt, while Kubenka needed two. Gadson beat out
Szabo because Gadson needed one attempt to clear 5-5, while
Szabo needed two. Kubenka won the sliver medal because she
cleared 5-5 in one attempt.

"I've been working pretty hard since regionals," Gadson said.
"Running the bleachers helped a lot."

Gadson's biggest scare was at 5-4. Gadson was down to her
third and final attempt at 5-4 before clearing the bar.

"I went a little wider on my jump. I was jumping too close
earlier and that's why I hit the bar," Gadson said. "I threw
my arms up better too. That gave me more drive."

Exceeding her goals on Friday has raised Gadson's future goals.

"I expect to win it next year," said Gadson, with a laugh.

Congratulations to all those who represented East Texas. But when the final results came in didn't see many East Texas Teams.

2A was probably the best represented with Daingerfield a 4th (22) White Oak 9th (16) Jefferson 19 (11) Queen City, Groveton, EF and San Augustine all placing in the points.

3A LE with a tie for first with the girls the highest place but in the boys they place 13th (22) then Tatum 16th, Crockett, Canton But when those fast rabbits from Atlanta have only one point it makes you wonder Did that Delay hurt East Texas more than the rest of the state.

4A Texas High 3rd then Marshall 9th (22) Livingston 31 (4) Then Henderson tied for 42 with (2) hey maybe they are making a comeback Regionals in Baseball then points at the state meet. I thought they had dropped in to obscurity.

Did I miss Comesneil?

So I would say East Texas was not up to their usual standards. not a Great Job.
