Sabine overcame a 7-run 2nd inning by Winona Monday night by scoring 7 of their own in the 3rd to top the Wildcats 10-7 for the second close game in a row with Winona.
The Nationals, led by Dakota Stewart's lead-off home run in the 3rd inning, erased a 7-2 deficit at the friendly confines in Liberty City to run their undefeated season record to 8-0.
Observations from the front row:
(1) Amazing what a player can do to fire up a team, whether it's
-- a great defensive play,
-- a head-first slide at home to score a run, or
-- a timely home run when the team is down, both on the scoreboard, and emotionally.
(a) Dakota Stewart had been a catalyst for Sabine most of the season as he struck out batter after batter with his fast ball. It cut down on the lucky bouncers and bloopers, as well as the defensive misplays that could occur when a ball is "put into play".
Monday night, he became a catalyst with his bat as he came to the plate in the bottom of the 3rd inning with his team in trouble, trailing 7-2. Of course, Dakota had problems of his own at the time.
-- It's been two games since he sliped down at first base, hurting his shoulder, while getting the final out in a 6-3 win over Chapel Hill.
-- He played first base against West Rusk, but couldn't pitch. His arm hurt after batting in the game.
-- He didn't play against Winona the last game, in part to the injured arm.
-- Monday night, again against Winona, he batted as a sub on the bench, with the intention of playing right field for an inning. He needed to play to make sure he qualified for All-Stars .. just in case his arm got A LOT BETTER.
(b) Stewart put a 2-1 low fastball on a line over the left field fence into the trees. It only lowered the deficit to 7-3, but it fired up the Nationals'. They went from seemingly thinking about the 5-run deficit and Winona's 7-run 3rd inning, both largest stats of the season against Sabine, to believing they would win this game. Welcome back, Dakota ......
© After a groundout, the Nationals strung together four singles, a triple, and a walk to score another 6 runs and take the lead 9-7. The didn't lose it ... because the Wildcats never scored another run.
(2) Winona has now found three different ways to lose to Sabine ..
................................................. Winona gave up ........Unern ....x-Run
..Games ....... Dte ..... Score ... Walks ... Hits ... Errs...... Runs ..... Inng
1st @ Win .... 4/10 ...... 9-0 ....... 16 ........ 6 ....... 3 ........ -- .......... 4

3rd @ Sab .... 6/1 ...... 10-7 ........ 7 ....... 10 ....... 2 ........ 1 .......... 7
(a) Winona's 7-run 2nd inning seemingly put them in the driver's seat, 7-2 .. a 5-run lead. However, Sabine's 3rd inning comeback consisted of:
..... Batter ................ AB ................................................................................
................
Dakota Stewart ......... HR ...... Hard line drive over left field fence ......................... RBI .......... 3-7

Brandon Florence ...... W ........ PB, WP, WP .........................................................UE Run ....... 9-7
Bruce Broyles .......... KOK ..................................................................... 3 outs
(b) Note: The two runs that scored on the pick-off attempt bad throw were earned runs because the next batter hit a triple, which would have driven both of them in.
(3) The 7-run 2nd inning by Winona wasn't chopped liver. They got seven base hits and two walks ... and could have scored more.
(a) . Batter ............... AB

(b) The Winona 2nd inning resulted in two season bests against Sabine ...
-- 7-run 2nd inning - most given up. Previous high was 3-run 4th inning against ... Winona, the last game. Sabine won, 7-5.
-- 5-run deficit - largest this season. Previous high was a 2-0 deficit against Carthage (1st inning). Sabine won, 10-4.
© However, teh Wildcats didn't score another run. A good reason is probably the next two pitchers that closed out the game for Sabine...
Pitcher ........Inn'g .......... Hits ..... Runs ..... KO ..... W .... HBP
Cook ............ 2 ............ 1 (1B) ..... -- ......... 6 ...... -- ....... 1 ... (4th -- KOK, KO, KOK)
Streeter ....... 2 ............ 1 (2B) ..... -- ......... 4 ...... -- ...... -- ... (6th -- KOK, KOK, KO)
When there are 12 available outs in the remaining 4 innings, and you have 10 K's, that doesn't leave many outs to play with.
Notes:
#1 - Streeter faced the minimum 6 batters in his 2 innings (5th-6th).
----- The double he gave up was picked off 3rd (5th).
#2 - 4th-6th innings .. Cook/Streeter faced minimum 9 batters.
(4) Sabine's aggressive base running continued to ring up stolen bases; however, it also continued to ring up a few outs.
......................................................Out on
(a) Team ........ SBse ..... PO/CS ...... Base
.... Sabine ......... 5 ........... 2* ............ 1 ..... (8-2 .. out at home on 1B).

.. Sab -- 5th Inn'g ... Picked Off ............ 3rd (2-5-2-5).
.. Win -- 5th Inn'g ... Picked Off ............ 3rd (2-5-2-5-1-6).
(b) For the season, I show the following for Sabine's base-running numbers:
-- Stolen base attempts ..................... 81
-- Stolen bases .................................. 71
-- Picked off/caught stealing .............. 10
-- Thrown out on bases during play ..... 5
Note:
-- Defensive indifference advances weren't counted as stolen bases.
-- Caught stealing counted if runner was safe on error during rundown.
-- DI subject to my opinion. Coachs and parents may have different views
(5) Offensive contributions were plentiful Monday night.
(a) Winona ....... AB ... Run ... Hits ........................ RBI
Campbell .......... 3 ...... 1 ....... 2 (2B, HR) .............. 1

Note: *
(b) Stewart sparked the fire with his home run (Nationals trailing 7-2), but the heart of the batting order made the flames burn brighter ....
Gregory, Cook, Streeter, and McCann (#2-#5 in the batting lineup) stats were as follows:
-- 8 for 9 ... 7-1B, 3B ... 7 runs ... 4 ribs ... 2 walks ... 3 steals.
(6) In the bottom of the 2nd inning, Sabine had the bases loaded, 2 out, 7-2 Winona, and Dakota Stewart on deck. I jokingly told his mom, "If one more batter reaches base, he's got a shot at a GRAND SLAM to tie the game at 7-7. Well, the batter made an out to end the inning, leaving 'em loaded.
Wishful thing on our part? Maybe .. but Dakota did lead off the 3rd with a HOME RUN, starting a 7-run rally that carried the Nationals past the Wildcats.
(7) Kudos to Jacob Moseley, pitcher for Winona who started the last two games (#7 and 8) against Sabine. He may have lost both games, but he was able to do something that pitchers in the first 6 games couldn't accomplish. He got the Nationals to ground the ball back to him at an alarming rate ... in fact, almost unbelievable. Check out this stat ...
............................................ Ground
Games .................. Inn'gs ...... to 1 ......... Per Game ....... Per Inn'g
.. 1-6 ...................... 30 ........... 9 ............ 1.5 times ........ .3 times
.. 7-8 (Moseley) ...... 7.3 .......... 8 ................. -- ............. 1.1 times
Think about that ... pitchers from the first 6 games got Sabine batters to ground back to them ... 1.5 times per game.
-- Mosely got Sabine batters to ground back to him a little over .................................................... 1 time PER INNING!!!
You ask about the season opener @ Winona? Yes, Moseley pitched 3 innings against Sabine.
-- Of the 9 outs, he struck out 8 batters and got a groundout to 1st base (3U). Didn't have much of an opportunity to get a ball hit back to him.
