Harmony's Wilburn selected as District 18-2A MVP

FROM STAFF REPORTS

Wednesday, June 10, 2009

Harmony's Amber Wilburn, who has signed with Henderson State University, was a unanimous selection as overall Most Valuable Player with the release of the District 18-2A All-District Softball Team.

Wilburn's teammates, Raney Pierce and Samantha Matulis, and her coach and mother, Renesia Wilburn, also earned superlative honors.

Pierce was named the district's outstanding defensive player, while Matulis shared top pitcher honors with Elysian Fields' Blair Hickey. Renesia Wilburn was named coach of the year.

Other superlatives went to Lacy Liles of Elysian Fields (outstanding offensive player), White Oak's Juliana Tuel (outstanding catcher) and Katie Billingslea (top utility player) and Harleton's Morgan Jones (newcomer of the year).

Amber Wilburn was 14-4 inside the pitching circle with a 0.63 earned run average, eight shutouts and 138 strikeouts in 100 innings pitched. At the plate, she was a .404 hitter with two home runs, 13 doubles and 36 RBI.

Pierce made no errors from her centerfield position, and she also hit .351 with 10 doubles, one triple, 11 RBI and 31 runs scored. Matulis was 11-4 with a 0.98 ERA, seven shutouts and 142 strikeouts in 114 innings pitched, and Hickey finished 31-9-1 inside the circle with a 0.50 ERA and 261 strikeouts.

Jones hit .357 with 19 runs scored, 10 doubles, 16 RBI and 31 stolen bases, and Billingslea — who played second base, catcher and in the outfield for White Oak — hit .395 with 17 RBI and 22 runs scored.

I understand there are only so many awards that can be given out, but in my opinion from what I saw in the playoffs, Kayla McDaniels of Harleton was as Valuable of a player as any team could ask..

Good job Kayla..

Well sportzter we all know that this stuff is all politics it has nothing to do with ability.. It just depends on what coach makes a deal with the next to nominate there players.
bignasty1
IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE PICKS

i have to disagree with you there allsport.......we had several players in this district that could have been the mvp. very, very good players.....wilburn, liles, mcdaniel. all were deserving....and there were more that could have been considered

all coaches can do is nominate their own. they don't vote for their own. if a coach nominates a player, and they don't get the votes, they just don't get the votes.

as kayla's coach, she was hands down our mvp. and quite frankly has been for 3 years. i have been very, very proud of her and what she has accomplished.

and as a coach in this district i can say that politics didn't have anything to do with the selections. at least on my part, and i'm absolutely confident that that is the case with the other 7 coaches.

And that's how it should be... I was definately not saying that anyone that received the Superlatives were not deserving, I was just complimenting K on her season... I thought she did an outstanding job, and that with a little more run support/defense, coulda / shuda / woulda been more recognized.. It will come....

Tell Them MIDDLE.

Middle if politics have nothing to do with selection how in this district as much talent as there was can you a a first teamer that only played half the season, a first teamer who played every other game in a platoon role and a second teamer who was for the most part a sub. You are right there are some very deserving girls on this list. But over the course of the last few years I have seen the All District teams in most districts have become more of a popularity contest. If that is what it is coming to just make All District a participation award to all and be done with it.

I have wondered about this for some time. I have no horse in this race, so there is no axe to grind. There are eleven first team selections for the infield and seven selections for first team outfield. Since there are only nine positions on the field, how come there are eighteen members for the first team? I have noticed that this is not the only district that this happens in, and I have seen comments from other posters concerning these type selections. Others have commented that having so many awards cheapens the awards. Others point out that it is nice to see so many get honors. What is the thinking behind this? All State selections normally list one player per position.

i agree with you knowledgeman, these selections should be based on merit and not on popularity or because someone is a senior. There needs to be some sort of criteria used to make these selections because some coaches have more influence than others. Being selected to an all district team should be an honor and it seems as though these selections have been watered down over the years. Just my opinion, take it for what it's worth, not much.
