All right. Summer band has started. Some of you have gone to camp already, some are at camp right now, some are staying on home turf. So how is it going? What are the big tunes this year? How are the new directors?

At snap practice one time in high school, we stood at attention so long, I dropped my trombone during sectionals afterwards because my arm was so tired. Of course that was in July and hadn't done that in about 9-10 months.

yes there are rules. if you start camp august 1st and host it at your own facilities then you have to follow UIL out of class rules. Which is i think 8 hours of outside time. We get around that in East Texas a lot of the time by having band camp at campsites like Lakeview, Beaver's Bend, and that place in Garrison

Answer this then if you can. Can a school have practice from Aug. 3rd and this week (Aug. 10) from 8-5 every day?
Thx

oh yeah...the thing is that no school every follows that UIL rule about rehearsal very much....
when i was in HS we practiced 8 - 5 for two weeks
the problem lies if there's some other director out to get someone...

I've been told that there aren't really any rules to follow BEFORE school starts except that you cannot work on your drill before August 1. Once school starts, though, that 10-hour practice rule applies.
twotouches, you can go to the UIL website. I would have, but I'm too lazy.

This guy (Lmbrjackfan) CAN answer any and ALL of your questions. The problem is that he doesn't know the UIL rules and therefore, I wouldn't trust his/her answers. If you really have a question about UIL rules, then go to the UIL web site and look it up for yourself. Anybody that thinks that rules are broken and folks look the other way, is clueless. Here in East Texas, that might happen, but in areas of the state where it is cut throat about State Marching Contest and BOA, it's a different story.
To be honest with you though, it sounds from your posts that your really wanting to complain about the amount of practice that you or your son/daughter is going to, and for that, you need to talk to your band director.

Elysian Fields got back from camp last Sunday. I must say that this was the most productive band camp I've ever participated in. It's good to know that we are starting off my senior year right. I honestly see a sweepstakes band in the making.

Camp for Longview was always fun and exhausting. Reveille, Breakfast,Snap practice, full band, sectionals, full band,lunch/break,sectionals,full band, supper, snap, band activities. Three days of that is pretty productive.
