Also, in 1996, the Red Sox send Roger Clemens out to face the Tigers. The Rocket holds the Tigers to 4 hits en route to a 3-0 shutout. He ties his record for most strikeouts in a 9-inning game with 20 K's on this day.

Since this year's edition of the Detroit Tigers is closing in on the all-time record for losses in a season, let's mention that on this day in 1984, the Tigers clinch the AL East championship with a 3-0 win over the Brewers as starter Randy O'Neal records his first ML win. The Tigers become the 4th team this century to be in first place every day of the season, joining the '23 Giants, the '27 Yankees and the '55 Dodgers (as of 1984).

In 1965, on Mickey Mantle Day at Yankee Stadium, a crowd of 50,180 fans see the Mick play his 2,000th game. Among the people at the game are Joe DiMaggio and Bobby Kennedy. In Mickey's first AB, Detroit's Joe Sparma comes off the mound to shake his hand. Detroit wins 4-3, as reliever Denny McLain gets the win.

In 1931, the A's hurler Lefty Grove beats the White Sox, 3-1, on five hits. He is the first to win 30 games since Jim Bagby of Cleveland in 1920 and he will be the last AL hurler to do so until Denny McLain in 1968.

In the 1987 season Darrell Evans had 34 homers. He turned 40 that year. In 1985 he hit 40 homers but was only 38 years old at that point.

Interesting point is that in 1985 when he had his last 40 homer season he batted .248 which was also his lifetime average after playing in 2687 games.
