Winona will win a few, but i dont think they will be that good. Sabine and White Oak will be in good shape as long as football season does not get someone hurt!

is there nobody out there already wanting to talk basketball

Sabine will be very good and WO will be no push over. Harmony will also be very good this year as they have some kids that didn't play last year that are playing now and will help out greatly. Those three should be much better than everyone else.

Sabine could very well start the season ranked number 1 or 2 in the state, and deservedly so after last season and the summer schedule they had.

White Oak will be the runner up in the district, with either New Diana or Harmony third. Winona is my dark-horse.
bballmaster
i heard last night at the Harleton football game that New Diana got that good point guard from Avinger. I can't remember his name but I saw him play last year and he will help them. That may change my prediction.

Sabine looks to me to be as strong or stronger right now than the closing of last yr. Its really going to depend if we can start the season healthy. Don't be surprised to see a no 1 or 2 state ranking from the get go. They have a rare opportunity this year, hope they can do what there capable of. notworthy.gif

I think your right about doing something special this year. We are going to have a chance to make Austin if all the peices of the puzzle fall right.

This was the longest running topic on smoaky last year. I know its very early but I know ther are some true basketball fans out there let me hear you.
bballmaster
I guess this will be my last attempt to intice those basketball junkies to respond. I think that our district could be one of the best in the region. I keep hearing different stories on how many games some of the teams in our district played this summer. My position has changed on the prediction though. Diana played us close this summer a couple of times and that kid from avinger will help them. I also herd that winona got a move in that has some size, i think the starting running back on the football team. Our summer league coach thinks Diana is much better than last year so they get the nod over winona.

Thats more like it now we are going. What do you mean recrutied, did the district approve him yet. I herd that he moved there. I do know that he played with them this summer but that does not mean anything. I herd the big kid from winona was from big sandy and there winonas head coach addopted him. that sounds like recruting. And as for first wo lost several key players and we have all ours back. I herd harmony had some new kids out did they play this summer if they did they did not seem to help much when I watched them this summer in the wo tournament

Oh you mean the WO tournament when harmony had 5 or 6 guys and half the team was freshman? haha ya that won't be Harmony's varsity this year bud. Harmony's varsity will be much improved from last year.

How should Sabine do in the Hardin Jefferson tourney?
Bigtoe
That tourney is always loaded. Sabine missed playing in the finals by a tip-in at the buzzer last year, if I'm not mistaken. They could take it this year. The team is focused and had a great summer. Won the Great American Shoot-out Tourney at Denton (beat a Houston based select team that knocked off last year's winner and 2A state champion Ponder in the finals.)
cats69
haha as much as i hate to say it, Sabine should win this year. WO will be young and pretty inexperienced but with the way boyett coaches and based just off tradition WO will get that 2nd spot

Yes you're right...Winona's head coach DID adopt him....over 2 years ago before he ever thought about coming to Winona. The kid's mother had passed away and he was going to be left homeless. The head coach adopted him and provided a HOME and a FAMILY for him. Some things are more important than athletics!!!

i love how everyone keeps picking harleton to be last in the district thats good there going to turn some heads early on

Wow that is awsome sound like the new coach has alot of class and sonuds like he will be a great role model for him. How good of a basketball player is he because I heard that he was a very good football player. Does anyone know if that kid from avinger was approved to play at diana.

I have no idea who will finish first or last, but I know that Harmony has the funniest coach. I would like to sit behind their bench and listen to Coach Vardeman EVERY night. It's better than anything on TV. It helps that he's a heck of a coach also.

UG last? come on guys... Cant the Lions get any props... They will have all there starters back, 3 SR's 2 2 Jr's. They competed very well last year in district, only getting upstaged horribly by WO and Sabine. You watch out UG will compete this year, Harmony is not as good as they claim, not according to what I saw in Summer Ball... New Diana will fall drastically down the list because they had only one scorer last year, and well He is Gone... Winona and EF? Ahead of UG? We will see.. I rank them as Follows, with the 3-5 spots very competive..
1. Sabine
2. White Oak
3. Union Grove
4. Harmony
5. New Diana
6. Winona
7. E.F.
h-town12
Do I have to keep saying this? Harmony never has all their team at the summer league games. Many of them are playing travel baseball during the summer, and most of the time they move up freshman to play. Harmony beat UG with pretty much 2 or 3 starters this year every game except the one where one of the starters lips got busted. As for Harleton turning heads, I don't know what for in basketball.
bballmaster
That is alot of confidence coming from UG. thats good but I just cant see it. Coach Burns does a great job but having all players back on a team who finished at the bottom is not something to build on it is something to worry about. I hope you prove me wrong because we need a challange. As for this summer the only teams in our district that played us close would be WO and ND, both played us single digits. and we have our 3 best players back. I hope someone in our district can play us close besides WO so we can be well prepared to make that run to the state title

Haven't heard anything from WO or ND lately whats happening in your neck of the woods
bballmaster
Well i am making another attempt to talk hoops. is there anyone out there intrested in 18-2a basketball. it seemed last year this was the longest running post on Smoaky, i know its early but there is nothing better than talking basketball even during football season!!!!!!!!

Let me here ya east texas hoops fans

Who is gonna play down low for Sabine? Byrd? I know they return Kirk, Jackson, Montana and Byrd. Any help coming in the post positions? WO is gonna be 6ft4 and 6ft 5 down low..That might help the Necks. Sabine is the team to beat. I dont dispute that one bit. WO also has a freshman guard that will make an impact...Gonna be a special player at WO before he gets out.

Zach Royce Sr. , he is the tallest player on the team, at least 6.5 maybe more. He is not a a Tyler Woodrill, but he is getting stronger each time he plays. He is a good kid and a tough competitor. He will be ready to go.
bballmaster
Who is this freshman you speak of from WO, what is his name. As for our inside game it will not be what it was last year but Royce will do a good job. He wont be the offensive threat that Woodrall was but will bound and make the shots given to him. What about eveyone else out there, Winona, ND, Harmony whats you guys story. Who will be that third place spot? ND did it last year will it be someone else that sneaks up this year or will all the ball played by ND that i saw this summer in our summer league make the difference. I did not see Winona and Harmony wasen't very good when i did see them but someone on here says otherwise. who will help Harmony that was not there last year to make them the favorite for the 3rd place spot.

snuffy
Harmony should take the 3rd spot...Return most of their players.
snuffy
The freshman from WO is Chris Anderson. His dad was a good athlete for WO back in the early 80's. Excellent ball handler and passer. Prob wont be asked to score much as a freshman but will make an impact for sure.

Why is this topic not on the main High School Sports page?

Harleton is gonna be good? They lost to Kilgore (in a tournament) last year by 20 points for goodness sakes! That is about as low as you can go.

Sabine
White Oak and
New Diana will very likely be top 3
for the 2nd year in a row.

harleton didnt even play kilgore last year thumbdown.gif banghead.gif censored.gif
bballmaster
I think Harelton will be ok but they lost good coach with a good knoledge of the game an most importantly diciplain. New Diana will fight for the third place spot but Winona will be tough. I think that the kids that didn't play last year and the transfers will push them past and be that third place team. They also have the coach that was there when they were good and will be orginizied, diciplain and use the athletes he has to his advantage.
bballmaster
I know it seems a long time away but 41 days, or 1013 hours till October 28th at 3:00pm is going to get here sooner than you think so why not start talking about it. The friendly rivalries are awsome and the knoledgeable people makes this an enjoyable topic to keep going. Basketball 24/7 it really is possable.

h-town12
I don't know if anyone from WO will know this, but Harmony's jv 3 years ago, which were all freshman, played WO's jv or fish team I can't remember and took them to ot and won by a 1. That will be the majority of the team this year plus a few younger ones. 3 kids that should have played last year (wanted to focus on baseball which is ok too) are going to help big time, plus Harmony only lost 1 person. One of the guys playing this year will help in the post area, and the other two will be great wing players. I think Harmony will contend much better than last year. They actually played WO pretty decent, and the last game were close to winning but ran out of gas from lack of depth (injuries).

I'm very excited for Harmony b-ball this year, but right now it's time to focus on football. Doesn't hurt anything to talk about it though. bballmaster when did you see Harmony play? The WO tourny?
bballmaster
Yes h-town12 it was in the WO tournament and I saw you play against ND and they beat you pretty bad but I know that doesn't mean anything they played us close buy 9 i think. your point guard seems to be young but i saw some flashes of ability that could help you this year. I still think Winona with its move ins and NDs new point guard, recrutied or not will help them. I hope that some of the teams will be better this year we need the battles to prepare us for the playoffs that we didn't get last year. That is not putting anybody down it just is fact and I am so looking forward to this season. Let me here some of you from Winona, UG, ND, EF somebody that wants to talk b-ball from district 18-2a.
h-town12
What you saw was 2 varsity players and the rest would be some jv players this year. Most of the kids from Harmony go on their vacations and what not the first week of summer, or whenever the tourney was I can't remember, so not to miss any of the workout camps, and a few others were playing baseball. I think ND has most of their team there too. I wouldn't judge anything based on the summer leagues. Last year Harmony smoked WO in 7 on 7 and looked what happened during the regular season, totally different outcome. I'd go by what everyone has coming back, and Harmony will be loaded.

Lots of people missing on both sides. Sabine looked a little better in the second game. Great practice for all involved.

I could be wrong, but I believe you were the one saying these exact same things before the season last year. "Shock the district" I believe were your exact words. Look where that got you.... It would be best for you to not talk to much on here and spend some more time in the gym before you make the guys on one of the better teams in your district upset. We all saw what happened to Winona last year when they started acting like they were better than they actually were.

As for my predictions:
Sabine
WO
Winona
Harmony or ND
UG
EF
Harleton

Ianyone else playing fall ball right now or playing in any tournaments besides us. I am just trying to get this post started again and this is a good way to do in. I still want to hear from some others on how this district will end up.

Diana recruited a point guard from Avinger, so that will help them; Sabine is best in district, obviously, and other teams are taking strides. Here's how I see District 18-AA:

1- Sabine
2- White Oak
3- New Diana
4- Harmony
5- Union Grove
6- Winona
7- Harleton
8- Elysian Fields

The top four are pretty certain, but as for the bottom four, it looks a little questionable, but we'll see!
