Are you guys seeing any? We put up another stand today and then went to my son's hunting spot. There were 11 under his feeder. 20 years ago even seeing one was something to remember. Now we see as many of them as we see deer.

We must be hunting on opposite ends of the Pineywoods ( I'm in Cherokee county). It is still something special to see one. I think I heard some down in our bottom last year but I'm not sure. I want to be your buddy come spring.

Opening day of deer season we had either 32 or 37 come out. I can't remember the count. We do have quite a few there. However you have to find them in the spring as they go into their rut.

NWTF and TPWD teamed to stock a bunch in the 90's. Where the habitat and lack of predation is good for them they prospered. Marginal areas there are a few. In areas where the habitat and predation wasn't acceptable they have disappeared.
I used to see a roost along the Sabine River in Harrison county. There were about a dozen birds on it but they seem to have dwindled to just a very few. I will very rarely see a feather from one.
There are pockets of birds scattered all through east Texas but they aren't everywhere in the area. It's all about idea habitat and lack of predation. Personally I wonder if hogs will be their undoing?

We have seen a few in Cherokee County. You are right, they are still something to ooo and ahhh at around there. Not enough to be shooting at for sure. I hope they keep building their populations up. I think it would be great to see them more often in the wild!

Hogs could have somethin to do with it considering they will eat anything they can find. Our big problem is bobcats. We have one or two cats that show up every year and will kill some out of that big group of turkeys but we weed them cats out but more always seem to show up.

I agree with Catmaniac. I think that hogs have much more of an impact on the Turkey population than coyotes, bobcats, and any other predators combined. I have personally witnessed the destruction hogs will create on a nest. A friend of mine showed me a nest that he had found that had 5 or 6 eggs in it. I took my brother in to show it too him the very next day and it was gone. The only thing left was a little shell, rooted ground, and numerous hog tracks. Just another reason for me to hate hogs.
