Meeks leaving Henderson for Pittsburg
Wednesday, 16th January 2013 - 4:14PM
Dickey Meeks has coached two separate high school football programs to state championships in East Texas, one at Chapel Hill in 1989 and another two years ago at Henderson.

But, if he is going to win another one, it might be at Pittsburg High School, where he will be recommended on Thursday night to replace Robert Manley as the Pirates' new athletic director and head football coach.

Meeks, and his 236 career victories at Chapel Hill, Pine Tree, Mount Vernon, Henderson and previous stops in Louisiana will move a little further north if the school board approves his recommendation at 6:00pm on Thursday.

Pittsburg superintendent Judy Pollan told David Smoak, "We're very excited, it's going to be great for our kids."

Meeks told Smoak on Monday, "I've always liked the tradition at Pittsburg and there's no doubt they have athletes and I've always enjoyed the challenge of taking a program to another level," Meeks continued, "I love it up in that area from my time at Mount Vernon, my wife and I are excited."

When asked to reflect back on his six years at Henderson, Meeks said, "You always want to leave a program in great shape and I think we've not only done that, but, we also did what I told their school board we would do, we did what I expected, win and win big."

Meeks also told Smoak, "I remember Coach Manley telling me about a year ago this job might be open soon, and that got my interest, I mean they've won a state championship here before (1980), and they have a great history."
Temple QB Allen switches to TCU...
Wednesday, 16th January 2013 - 4:14PM
Temple High School quarterback Zach Allen, 6-2 1/2, 185, has switched his commitment from Syracuse to T.C.U.

Allen, who passed for 2,175-yards and 24-TD's and ran for 941-yards and 9-TD's as a senior, visited T.C.U. on Wednesday and committed on Friday night.

Allen told David Smoak, "With the coaching change at Syracuse, I decided to visit T.C.U. and with the uncertainty at Syracuse with the change at head coach and offensive coordinator, and after long talks with my family, I'm excited to be a Horned Frog." Allen continued, "The last week has been very stressful for me and my family, we talked quite a bit about it, I'm definitely relieved. You know, I've remained committed to Syracuse for over six-months and I wouldn't have visited T.C.U. has there not been a coaching change in the first place at Syracuse."

His high school head coach, Mike Spradlin told Smoak, "I think the switch with their coaching staff opened up this opportunity, and T.C.U. was on Zach hard early on in the recruiting process."
Rick Barker leaving New Boston for Fouke, Arkansas
Wednesday, 16th January 2013 - 4:13PM
Rick Barker told David Smoak he is retiring from coaching in Texas and has accepted the job as head football coach at Fouke High School on the east side of Texarkana, "I have 31-years in Texas and this is a unique opportunity for me to retire, and yet continue coaching in Arkansas without moving."

Barker was 68-20 at New Boston, and 56-43 in nine years at Pleasant Grove and had a nice run, "We did a lot of good things at New Boston and obviously I wish we could have done even more, but I loved working at both New Boston and Pleasant Grove around Texarkana."

Barker, who accepted the job at Fouke High School this week, informed his players of his decision on Tuesday morning.
