Carthage LB commits to University of Texas
For the second time this week the Texas Longhorns have received a commitment from an East Texas blue-chip linebacker.

This time it’s Carthage linebacker Kendall Thompson (6’3, 232, 4.7) who was offered on Saturday afternoon and committed to Mack Brown when offered, “He asked me if I wanted to be a Longhorn and I said yes sir, this is a dream come true for me, I’ve been a Longhorns fan since I was a little kid so let’s make it official right now.”

Thompson was a 1st-Team All-Smoaky.com selection after recording 144-Tackles, 21-Tackes For Losses, 13-QB Pressures, 3-Caused Fumbles, 3-Fumble Recoveries, 3-Interceptions, and 1-Sack.

On Tuesday of this week it was Daingerfield linebacker Steve Edmond who gave his verbal commitment to Texas.

There’s been speculation on what position Thompson would he play at Texas but he’s not concerned about it right now, “Sure, I’d like to play linebacker, but at UT they call it the 4-LB position on the edge that’s where they want me, but it doesn’t matter to me because I want to play where they need me.”

When asked how he’d react before driving down to Austin for the weekend, Thompson said, “I was very anxious to meet Coach Brown and the rest of the coaches and other recruits and when he offered the scholarship I was so excited, it was unreal, and it’s such a tremendous honor to be apart of this recruiting class.”

Thompson is a two-year starter at inside linebacker at Carthage where the Bulldogs have won back-to-back Class 3-A state championships, but the newest UT commit says his high school teammates have some work to do leading into his senior season, “We need to finish what we started and stay focused throughout the off-season,” Thompson continued, “We have great competition in our district and we’ll have a target on our back so we must be ready for every challenge.”

Thompson drove down to Austin with his grandparents, mother, brother and sister.

Thompson is the third East Texan to commit to Texas for the Class of 2011, other than Edmond, Hallsville OL Josh Cochran committed two weeks ago.
