RIDAY, OCTOBER 8TH @ LOBO STADIUM, LONGVIEW
LONGVIEW 34 TYLER LEE 31 (OVERTIME)
(In a game that most thought would decide the District 12-5A championship, nationally-ranked Longview rallied to beat Tyler Lee in overtime, 34-31. Lobos running back Vondrell McGee capped off another 100-yard game with his second touchdown of the game to give the Lobos the hard fought victory.
Both teams came out like a track meet in the first half, with the Lobos jumping to 7-0 and 14-7 leads, only to see Tyler Lee respond with an offensive onslaught, and an eventual 28-14 lead in the second-quarter. The Red Raiders were led by running back Tyrone Ross, who rushed for 101-yards and two touchdowns in the first half alone. Lee also scored on a Josh Hill pass to Walter Simpson, and what looked like a backbreaking fumble return for a touchdown by Jason Stripling.
After Lee grabbed a 28-14 lead late midway through the second-quarter,
McGee, who eclipsed the one-thousand yard mark during the game, broke numerous tackles and raced 90-yards for a touchdown, cutting the Lee lead to 28-21 at halftime.
Lee's couldn't take advantage of tremendous field position throughout the 3rd-quarter, and that, and a Red Raiders fumble midway midway through the 4th-quarter opened the door for Longview to force overtime.
The Lobos used a fake punt to continue what proved to be the game-tying drive, which ended with Carlin Freeman's three-yard touchdown run.
In overtime, Longview's defense, which disrupted Lee's high-octane offense throughout the second half forced the Red Raiders to settle for a 27-yard Cole Scates field goal.
And then, on their first play in overtime, McGee raced 25-yards for the game-winning touchdown.
The win improved Longview to 7-0 on the season, while Tyler Lee dropped to 3-3 overall.)
