DAVID SMOAK'S GREATEST HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL GAMES
(COVERED, BROADCAST, OR WATCHED AS A FAN)
There have been many great games in East Texas high school football history, and as much as I wish I could've seen them all, that's impossible. But, I've seen my fair share.

You are welcome to read through my list below. If you have, what you think is, a greatest game of your own you are welcome to e-mail me and share it. smoaky@smoaky.com

This page will include information on local high school all-time lists, team and individual state records, all-time coaching records, and even a constantly revised list of East Texans who "have or are" playing the National Football League, N.B.A, or Major League Baseball.

2004 TYLER LEE @ #5 LONGVIEW

2004 TYLER LEE @ #5 LONGVIEW (Posted by David Smoak)

RIDAY, OCTOBER 8TH @ LOBO STADIUM, LONGVIEW
LONGVIEW 34 TYLER LEE 31 (OVERTIME)
(In a game that most thought would decide the District 12-5A championship, nationally-ranked Longview rallied to beat Tyler Lee in overtime, 34-31. Lobos running back Vondrell McGee capped off another 100-yard game with his second touchdown of the game to give the Lobos the hard fought victory.
Both teams came out like a track meet in the first half, with the Lobos jumping to 7-0 and 14-7 leads, only to see Tyler Lee respond with an offensive onslaught, and an eventual 28-14 lead in the second-quarter. The Red Raiders were led by running back Tyrone Ross, who rushed for 101-yards and two touchdowns in the first half alone. Lee also scored on a Josh Hill pass to Walter Simpson, and what looked like a backbreaking fumble return for a touchdown by Jason Stripling.

After Lee grabbed a 28-14 lead late midway through the second-quarter,
McGee, who eclipsed the one-thousand yard mark during the game, broke numerous tackles and raced 90-yards for a touchdown, cutting the Lee lead to 28-21 at halftime.

Lee's couldn't take advantage of tremendous field position throughout the 3rd-quarter, and that, and a Red Raiders fumble midway midway through the 4th-quarter opened the door for Longview to force overtime.

The Lobos used a fake punt to continue what proved to be the game-tying drive, which ended with Carlin Freeman's three-yard touchdown run.

In overtime, Longview's defense, which disrupted Lee's high-octane offense throughout the second half forced the Red Raiders to settle for a 27-yard Cole Scates field goal.

And then, on their first play in overtime, McGee raced 25-yards for the game-winning touchdown.

The win improved Longview to 7-0 on the season, while Tyler Lee dropped to 3-3 overall.)

2003 #8 ROBERT E. LEE VS. #1 THE WOODLANDS

2003 #8 ROBERT E. LEE VS. #1 THE WOODLANDS (Posted by David Smoak)

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 29TH, TEXAS STADIUM, IRVING
THE WOODLANDS 50 ROBERT E. LEE 48 (TRIPLE-OVERTIME)
(Robert E. Lee and The Woodlands put on a classic at Texas Stadium in the Class 5-A Division One Quarterfinals. The Woodlands led Le 17-14 at halftime. The Highlanders upped their lead to 20-14 in the 3rd-quarter after a Cory Fowler field goal, but Lee regained the lead, 21-20, on a 27-yard touchdown pass from Josh Hill to Jamaal Shurme, after the ball had been tipped in the air by Red Raiders tight end Brandon Pettigrew. But The Woodlands bounced back on a 12-play, 73-yard drive, capped off on 15-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Dodson to Danny Amendola, plus the two-point conversion for a 28-21 The Woodlands advantage. The Woodlands had the ball deep into Lee territory twice in the fourth-quarter, but couldn't score...and that led to a dramatic 8-play, 80-yard scoring drive by Lee to tie the game at 28. Lee tied the game on Keondra Smith's 10-yard touchdown run and Austin Stanley's extra point with under two-minutes remaining in the game. In the first overtime, The Woodlands scored on a touchdown pass from Dodson to Amendola, and added the extra point for a 35-28 lead...and appeared to be poised to win when Lee faced a fourth-down and 20 from their own 21-yard line, but quarterback Josh Hill found senior wide receiver Odova Stevens at the goal-line for a 21-yard touchdown strike, and Stanley's extra point tied the game again at 35. Lee opened the second-overtime with the first score, on a Smith touchdown run of 2-yards. Stanley's extra point put Lee in front 42-35...but The Woodlands tied the score again on Samson Taylor's 3-yard touchdown run. Lee's defense appeared to have stopped The Woodlands on third-down, dropping Dodson for a big loss outside the ten-yard line, but Red Raiders cornerback Quentin Gardner was offsides giving The Woodlands the ball at the three-yard line. Fowler added the extra point for the The Woodlands to tie the game after two-overtimes at 42-42. The Woodlands got the ball to start the third-overtime, and Dodson didn't waste anytime, sprinting in for a 25-yard touchdown on first-down. The Woodlands then added the two-point conversion on a pass from Dodson to Jimmy Fraser for a 50-42 The Woodlands lead. Lee though came right back on a 25-yard scoring scamper by junior tailback Tyrone Ross to pull within to withing two at 50-48. After a Lee timeout, the Red Raiders season ended when Keondra Smith was stopped short of the goal-line on the two-point conversion. Final, The Woodlands 50 Robert E. Lee 48. Robert E. Lee ended their season at 10-3. Two weeks later, The Woodlands would lose to Galena Park North Shore in the Class 5-A Division One State Championship Game at Rice Stadium in Houston.

2002 ROBERT E. LEE @ #6 LUFKIN, ABE MARTIN STADIUM, LUFKIN

2002 ROBERT E. LEE @ #6 LUFKIN, ABE MARTIN STADIUM, LUFKIN (Posted by David Smoak)

(In front of a packed house, Lee won their fourth straight game at Abe Martin Stadium, but the Red Raiders needed a minor miracle to do it. Lee jumped in front 14-0 in the first-quarter, but Lufkin cut the lead to 14-7 at the half. Both teams traded jabs throughout the second-half, but Lee's defense came up big in the third-quarter stopping Lufkin inside their 30-yard line after a Matt Flynn fumbled snap. Lee led 14-7 with just a couple of minutes remaining, when Lufkin started a drive at their own seven-yard line. Lufkin quarterback Terrence Parks hit Ashford Ayers for a 57-yard completion to kick-start the Panthers game-tying drive. And then, on third-down from the Lee 24-yard line, Parks threw a touchdown pass to Quentin Holman to tie the game at 14-14 with just over a minute remaining in regulation. Lufkin scored first in overtime on a five-yard run by Parks, but the Panthers successful two-point conversion was called by an illegal formation penalty. The Panthers extra point was botched on a bad snap, and Holman was stopped just shy of the goal-line to keep Lufkin's lead at 20-14. After a short run, and two incomplete passes, Lee faced a fourth-down and 8 from the Lufkin 23-yard line when Flynn found Mike Rogers near the goal-line for the game-tying touchdown...Rogers had dropped a pass on the previous play. Sophomore Cole Scates then kicked the extra point, and Lee escaped from Lufkin with a dramatic 21-20 victory, their fourth consecutive win in Lufkin, and their second win over state-ranked Lufkin during the regular season.
LUFKIN 27 EULESS TRINITY 23
(During a torrential downpour, Lufkin senior quarterback Reggie McNeal basically wills his team to victory, as the Panthers “twice” rally from 20-points down to beat Trinity. McNeal’s 33-yard touchdown pass to Jeremie Berry put the Pack in front with only 36-seconds remaining. Lufkin would defeat Austin Westlake for the Class 5-A State Championship in the Astrodome)

This game earns national attention and it also wins numerous national awards, including a pair of ESPN “ESPY’s” for showstopper and game of the year. Plano East Cable TV broadcaster Mike Zoffuto, who was also the head football coach at Lake Highlands made the now famous comment after the touchdown…”I think I’m going to throw up….”. Zoffuto would later explain to me that his team, Lake Highlands had lost an earlier game to Plano East on a controversial call, and he wanted a chance for a rematch. Of course, a rematch that never occurred)

The loss knocked John Tyler out of the playoffs, as the Lions, coached by Allen Wilson dropped from first-place in the district to third-place.)

Chapel Hill played this game without either of its starting running backs, Delithro Bell who was injured before the game, and Kendrick Bell, who was injured right after scoring the games first touchdown. Class 4-A Defensive Player-of-the-Year Willie Mitchell scored a back-breaking touchdown right before halftime. Dickey Meeks’ Bulldogs, were only 6-4 during the regular season, before running off six consecutive playoff wins, of which five were shutouts. (The previous year, Daingerfield humiliated Gladewater 51-0 on their was to the Class 3-A State Championship. But, there was an incredible buildup for this playoff rematch, as both teams entered the game with identical 14-0 records. Jack Murphy’s Bears scored twice in the 4th-quarter to tie the game at 27, but Daingerfield’s Danny Mitchell blocked a Gladewater extra point to secure the tie, and Daingerfield advanced on penetrations. To this day, I still feel as if this was the greatest game I’d ever covered)

Groveton started their final possession with less than 2-minutes remaining in the game, with the score tied, the two teams were also tied in penetrations. But, Grand Saline held a two-first down advantage. Groveton, which had a slight advantage in total yards when their final drive began, needed at least two first downs. The Indians would convert exactly two first downs, one on a roughing the passer penalty, and another on Quarterback Neil Kemper’s pass to Randall Whittlesey.

In a game involving two completely different football traditions, the Canton Eagles shocked the defending state champion Gilmer Buckeyes 61-58 at TMF Rose Stadium in Tyler.

Canton quarterback G.J. Kinne threw a touchdown pass to Houston Tuminello in the final minute to give the Eagles their game-winning points.

The two teams, who combined for the third-highest scoring playoff game in Texas history (119), also combined for just under 1,200 yards in total offense.

Both teams also combined to score seven touchdowns in the third-quarter.

Canton rallied from down 14, 15, and 16-points throughout the game.

Kinne threw for 432 yards and five touchdowns, and Tuminello finished with 202-yards receiving.
