Coach of the Year

Ray Biles, Head Coach, Lorena
Led the Leopards to their first state championship since 1987 after 18-years as the head coach in Lorena. Biles, who I interviewed the week of the state championship game said, "well, it's ironic when I left Katy High School, they started winning state titles in bunches and I came to Lorena soon after they had played for two (winning in 1987, losing in 1989) and we haven't been back since." Well, that drought is over as the Leopards emphatically beating Brock 35-18. It was Lorena's fourteenth-consecutive victory after opening the season with two losses to Franklin and China Spring and those losses only make 2021 Lorena more impressive because they came against two other eventual state champions in the same season. Biles wrapped-up his 30th season as the Leopards head coach with the state championship trophy while on the same day capturing his 200th career victory.
One final note, Lorena was the first program I watched practice when I arrived in Central Texas in 2010 and nothing has changed from their old-school, physical, tough-as-nails approach and this season it paid of with an eventual state championship trophy.
