Coach of the Year

Scott Surratt, , Carthage

I was tempted to just copy-and-paste from many previous "Coach of the Year" honors with All-Smoaky.com but I remember Coach Surratt once reminding me among his many state championship seasons when I didn't name him coach of the year. He was being sarcastic, but don't ever underestimate his competitiveness to win everything. And, literally Surratt and the Carthage Bulldogs have won about everything since his first-season in 2007, including their ninth state championship with a 42-0 shutout of Wimberley for the Class 4-A, Division II title.

Surratt's nine state championships ties him with the legendary Gordon Wood for most state titles as a head coach in Texas high school football history at the 11-man level. Surratt just wrapped-up his sixteenth season as head coach at Carthage with a mind-numbing 205-29 record, 14 district titles, 16 playoff appearances and 9-0 in state championship game appearances.

Carthage I.S.D. superintendent Jarrod Bitter, "The long-term success of our football program is a direct reflection of Coach Surratt's leadership. He has built a winning culture that starts with extremely high expectations and a tremendous work ethic. I can't say enough about the positive impact he\'s had on our programs and student-athletes, and how important he's been to the Carthage I.S.D. community over the years."
