He does so many things with the football in his hands that you cannot teach, and he will leave you in awe. It has been an absolute joy to have J'Koby as an athlete in our program. He has an infectious smile and personality that makes you enjoy coaching him every day. I've said it before and I'll say it again, as good an athlete as J'Koby is, he's an even better human being. That is what we will miss the most."

He wants to win and is willing to do what takes to win in everything he does. He would practice with the scout team to give our defense the best possible look. Keyshawn is someone a coach is lucky to have once, maybe twice in a coaching career and the difference in Keyshawn and other players is his burning desire to compete. And that drive allowed Keyshawn to break, tie or finish second to Bills Sims numerous records and to be mentioned in the same sentence as a future Heisman Trophy winner and NFL Rookie of the Year, says a lot."

Mr. Selfless

Boone Morris, 6-2 ½, 225, LB, Mount Vernon

He made both the players and coaches better in Mount Vernon. His accolades as a player do not come close to the type of character he has, and Mount Vernon could not be more proud of Boone and the Legacy he has created."

Hooks coach Chris Birdwell, "Following a teammates injury, Ripken became our starting quarterback during his sophomore year and looked as calm and comfortable as anyone I've ever seen. He told me we all have high expectations and that wasn't going to change because he was forced to play quarterback. He's one of those guys that always seems to have a trick up his sleeve when you need a play to pick up a first down or win a game. He has broken all the passing records at Hooks High but is humble and smart enough to acknowledge that his teammates had a huge hand in that. Ripken helped lead the program.

Whether he is covering or returning kicks, punting them himself, making a tackle, or snapping on field goals, he has always been willing to do whatever is needed for the team to find success."

Coach of the Year

Alan Metzel, Head Coach, Gilmer

What a year it was in 2023 with the Buckeyes winning the Class 4-A, Division II state championship following an 0-2 start. But there's a reason Gilmer football has so much pride with the now four state championships and numerous times knocking on the door for more. Metzel, who is 52-8 in four years knocked the door down his first two years as a head coach, lost to thorn-in-the-side Carthage to end the 2022 season, before not only bouncing back from 0-2, but slayed Carthage along the way to a championship win against Bellville. Gilmer I.S.D. superintendent Rick Albritton, "Alan Metzel is a God-centered man who improves the life of everyone he touches. He is a true teacher at heart who doesn't give up on people and that attitude is reflected in his staff and players. This year's state championship came to fruition because he teaches and demonstrates opportunity in adversity."

79-Tackles, 21-TFL, 10-Sacks, 1-CF, 1-FR, 1-Safety, 3-Year Starter. Longview coach John King, "Xaryus was a three-year letterman and two-year starter on the defensive line for the Lobos. His production on the field the last few years allowed him to post outstanding defensive stats, but his character and coachability were what made the Lobo Defense one of the best in the state."

Cole Watson, 6-1, 195, Sr., QB, Tatum
