  1. Since district play started, and from a points allowed per game standpoint, East Bernard will be the best defense Newton has faced all year - allowing just 8.6 points per game. Unfortunately for East Bernard, Newton just threw up 79 points in a game where they were attempting field goals on first down actively trying not to score more on a Daingerfield defense that will end up being the second best defense Newton will have faced after the EB game (18.2 ppg - not including the Newton game of course). Oh, and uh, that Newton D is only allowing 6.4 ppg as well (again - district and beyond). It is pretty insane what Newton is doing this year. Again, these numbers only include district games and beyond (including opponent averages) : Newton is scoring 63.9 points per game against defenses that allow 23.6 on average - scoring 40.3 more points than the defenses they are playing normally allow. And let's be honest here - it could be more. Newton is holding teams to just 6.4 points per game to offenses that otherwise average 27.3 ppg. They basically take an offense and subtract 3 touchdowns from what they are used to scoring. In the playoffs, Newton is averaging 69 ppg against defenses that give up 19 per game. 50 points MORE than what the defense they are playing normally gives up. To put this into perspective, the only team in 3A D2 that averages more than 50 points a game period is Newton. The second most potent offense in the state averages 49 points per game. In the playoffs, Newton has scored more points BEYOND what the defense they are playing gives up than the next best team in the state scores total. That's not all - Newton is also holding teams that average 37.7 ppg in the playoffs to just 7.8 points. To summarize this playoff performance by Newton, take what the defense they are playing normally gives up......and add 7 touchdowns to that. This is probably about what Newton will score. Then take what the offense they are playing normally scores.....and subtract 4 touchdowns from that. This is probably what Newton will hold that team to. Newton 56 East Bernard 7 Crazy tidbit : the closest "game" Newton has played since district started would be their average offensive performance in a single game vs the grand total of points their defense has allowed in the entire regular season plus playoffs. Newton still wins 64-58. Musta been a nail-biter.

  2. I believe he is protecting him. He still needs a little more bulk to take that kind of pounding. Next year I truly believe he will be among the nation leaders in rushing.

  3. Huge Texas fan here also. Next August look for Ingram to be 10-15 lbs heavier and getting 20-22 touches a game instead of this year’s 14-15 touches a game. I am hoping his younger brother joins him in 2020 at UT.

  4. It’s certainly a different running game. Last year if Martin or TJ had the ball they could take it to the house. Wig and Bruce have had some long TD runs but what they really do well is grind down a Defense. These 2 kids have both taken some big hits this year and they get back up and play just as hard. We may not have the speed from last year but I don’t think there is any tougher running backs than these 2 kids.

  5. Administrator contracts come up every day, or at least every time the school board meets, or in the case of Head Football Coaches every Friday night. If Athens was not going to renew his contract, I applaud them for letting him know at the end of the season.

  9. Look guys Malakoff maybe in region 2 this year but they are a region 3 team! It took GV to have to battle through region 3 to become battle tested enough to climb the mountain and with a win this week they will reach the summit. Malakoff has rolled through region 2 because they are used to battling region 3 the last 4 seasons! Region 3 is still the toughest region in the state in 3A D1 and it will show when both Region 3 teams win this week......Yes Malakoff is region 2 now but just for this season and next then they will be back with Teague in region 3 where they belong! Good luck to GV and Malakoff.

  10. In other news, for those of you that haven't done a little internet scouring for this Panhandle team, here's a link/video. These guys LOOK and SOUND grounded and HUNGRY. You can tell that they are definitely in the weight room putting that real work in. Also, #20 D'Andre Campbell for Tascosa seems like the leader of this team. #16 King Doerue looks like a beast as well. I think we better not come out BS-ing with this team and we need to light that scoreboard up early and often. This Tascosa team seems like they could be the most dangerous if we get to playing "Jason Garrett/Scott Linehan" conservative and allowing them to hang around and being within 14 or even 21 points going into the 4th quarter. If, our defense shows up like they did against Spring Westfield for this week, we have a legitimate shot of advancing. But, everyone has seen our playaction, throw-it-deep to Kamden Perry movie. It's PAST time to get innovative with the playcalling and route running. Our deep, seam and fly routes have been put on notice. It's just time to start trusting and incorporating other receivers other than Perry and Kearby if we want to bust this game wide open. And for God's sake, I really would like to see Meredith get a few touches early on to give them a different look and provide a change of pace. Williams, Anderson and Meredith are all damn good backs but they are vastly different in running styles. Meredith, in my opinion could start at ANY school in the state of Texas but, I do feel like he's being heavily under utilized given his talent.

  11. Since district play started, and including playoff games as well, Gunter is beating teams by an average of 35.6 points per game. The teams they are beating are winning their games by an average of 6.6 per game. So, Gunter swings these games by an average of 42.2 points. Canadian is beating teams by 33.7 who are used to winning by 5.9 - for a swing of 39.6 points. Since Canadian wins by an average of 33.7, and Gunter "swings" their opponents out of their average game by 42.2 points, that would favor Gunter by 8.5 points. Gunter wins by an average of 35.6, and Canadian "swings" their opponents out of their average game by 39.6 points, so that would favor Canadian by 4 points. The average of these two would be Gunter favored by 2. The score my algorithm comes up with in this one is Gunter, 35-33. This is considering district games and beyond - as well as only the district and beyond games by their opponents. Using the same method : Considering every game played overall including preseason - Gunter 30, Canadian 27. Considering the best 3 "swing" games by each team** - Canadian 38, Gunter 29. Worst 3 swing games*** - Gunter 40, Canadian 25. Gunter's best 3 vs Canadian's worst 3 - Gunter 39, Canadian 11. Canadian's best 3 vs Gunter's worst 3 - Canadian 52, Gunter 30. Considering only the 4 playoff games - Canadian 37, Gunter 31. Games against opponents that score 30+ ppg - Canadian 29, Gunter 27. Games against opponents who hold teams to fewer than 20 ppg - Gunter 30, Canadian 22. The average of all of these : Gunter 32, Canadian 30. ** - Canadian's best 3 swing games were against Anson, Friona, and Colorado. Gunter's best 3 were the Holliday playoff game, Nocona, and the Holliday district game. *** - Canadian's worst 3 swing games were against Grapevine Faith, Perryton, and River Road. Gunter's worst 3 were Callisburg, Lexington, and S&S. It's hard to beat a good team two times in a row, and Gunter pulled that off against a very good Holliday team this year. Gunter would have to beat an even better Canadian team 3 times in a row to advance to the state final for the third consecutive year. It's a tall order, but I think Gunter will pull it off in a one-score game. Both teams in the 30s.

  12. Finish this thing Lobos! I don’t want to jinx y’all, but Longview has answered every challenge this year. This is the Lobos year! I think all of ETX is behind you guys. I know I am (even if some of y’all want Carthage to get beat, haha). Really hoping Longview gets that monkey off their back. With JT, Lufkin, and Marshall being in 5a and all back on track we could see big school ETX teams really represent in the coming years. Good luck Lobos. Handle business this week and then go get that ship.

We didn't always agree on everything, but he was a great guy to work for. Turned Athens around when everyone said it couldn't be done. Wish him and Mrs. Essary the best on whatever they decide to do next.

  14. It was just posted tonight after their home loss to Northwestern State. Will any local high school coaches get the call? Can they attract any D-1 coordinators or assistants? I’ve always felt that SFA didn’t recruit east Texas very well. Thoughts? http://bit.ly/2FsNgQr

  15. #56 sure pulled both hands up quick like most players would do when expecting to get called for holding...maybe he shouldn't have done that, I am sure that caught the refs attention if the flag wasn't already out, it was a definite hold, bad thing is that defender wasn't going to make a play on the ball carrier...he was already in 4th gear.

  16. Yes sir... being "fast" is not a positive attribute if you're out of position. "Flying to the football" will get you beat if it turns out the ball is on the complete other side of the field.

  17. I gotcha. Yeah, like I said, I watched some highlights. They run the option well. As an OLD King player, I love the triple option, using the fullback, etc. I also noticed a lot of their points have come in the 4th quarter, as a good option team does. Wear down the defense and be fresh late. Longview definitely has their hands full this week. I don't know who's the "favorite" because they're different teams from different areas in the state with different opponents. I just know that Longview's offense will be MUCH better this week without the elements throwing them off. And the defense is very fast.... But they have to play disciplined to stop an offense like this.

  18. But when an East Texas school plays a DFW school and nearly wins its worthy of respect in hoops....same here with football...Hanna deserves some respect they are a good team.... Plunk played but was splitting time at QB....his first game taking all the snaps at QB was Permian.....I was at the Tascosa-Hanna game....I'm by no means considering Tascosa a favorite..they aren't...but they are a team that should be respected...they blew out a good Midland Lee squad, beat Arlington, Mansfield Lake Ridge and Haltom in consecutive weeks...

  19. PC went 1-9 and 0-6 in district. I'm sure LH pulled up on defense with the game being that lopsided. Bulldogs win this one. Nothing new to Surratt and crew. I feel the MH game made them stronger!

  20. Plunk played in that game, and he also played against Odessa Permian where they lost. No doubt they're a different team. Have they seen an offense like Longview? Longview has played many multi-flex teams in the past. Against Lake Highlands (back when they ran it), we had success. When we played Pflugerville, I don't know what happened but they blew us out. And against Shreveport Byrd, we held them running the ball pretty well, but we couldn't score on them so we lost 22-15. Against the triple option, we're pretty good because of the quickness of our defense. Heck, that Garland team that ran a Wing T... We murdered them. I did see some videos on Tascosa. That Plunk is quick. He takes off in a hurry. Then again, the defenses he was playing were slower and didn't tackle well. Hanna is a pretty good team. They lost to Vela (although they'd have won if they didn't make so many mistakes) and that other team who both were undefeated and lost to Westlake by similar scores of 28-0 and 26-0.

  21. Come on Stepp, It ain't nothing for Valley teams to get to the 3rd/4th round every yr because the first 2-3 rounds they are playing other Valley teams. But when they get to round 3 or 4 they get beat by a San Antonio/Austin school. Its kinda like East Texas basketball. They can go 2-3 rounds deep, but when they get to the DFW schools, its over.

  22. Lots of mad respect for Tascosa...don’t care for the writer taking a shot at Longview...we are not a Metroplex entitled team...these boys have worked years to get here . This article would Anger me as a player https://www.amarillo.com/sports/20181209/rebels-defy-elites Now I see where it comes from...Matt Diggs started a war with Amarillo fans on Twitter with his comments about Longview.....I am not sure he has watched us the last few weeks...we have turned the ball over way too much in the last 2 games and gotten the worst type of penalties...we have got to fix that or we will come up short Sat

  23. Ain't no daisies at this point in the season. Everyone who gets to the semis deserves to be here. Tascosa's offense is gonna break a few big plays. No way around it. They do what they do, and they do it well. The key will be whether the Lobo defense maintains the composure to keep fighting the battle up front. Don't get s u c ked in to the misdirection trying to go for the "big hit," just maintain your gap and press your position. Trust your teammates. Offense needs a much cleaner game. Protect the ball. Stop trying to force the deep routes. Take the underneath stuff when you've got it. Moving the chains will bring the secondary up, THAT is when you hit it deep. I agree with the other posters who've asked for more of a mix at tailback. No reason to save Kaden at this point. Every defense in 6A knows our RB3 is better than most teams' RB1. Get him in the game. Fake it to him inside then hit Keilan with the swing pass. The LBs can't key on both of them. Overall, the Lobos must play with an businesslike attitude. Don't be driven by emotions. Go to work. Expect some chippy play. Tascosa knows they're at a talent deficit. They're gonna bring the "challenger" vibe. Don't get pulled into needless drama.

  25. I watched the GR/IP game last Friday Night. IP finally figured out that they could run on GR. and once they figured that out , it made the difference. Maybe I am wrong on this , but I thought IP had several kids playing both ways. Correct me if I'm wrong. If that is true , Then I believe that will show up late in 3rd & 4th Qtr. and PG pulls away. Good Luck to all and NO INJURIES.

  26. Me either. We all saw how bad he looked yesterday. You just look at his stats and makes you wonder how the score was 29-23. 455 yards passing. 100+ QB rating. It just shows stats don’t show the whole picture. Dak ain’t Romo. Romo could elevate the play of those around him. Miles Austin? Dak can’t do that. He doesn’t have the arm or the ability in some cases. You have to surround Dak with first round talent for him to succeed. Dallas can’t afford to pay him $20m plus and shortchange a position or two to pay that contract. Jerry wants to go cheap around $14/15m. That might be more manageable. But your gonna get what you pay for. Dak ain’t Brees or Brady. Your not gonna because of him but you sure might lose because he holds the ball a little long in the pocket, isn’t accurate on anything over 20 yards downfield.

  27. Could not have cared less tbh. Was too focused on my own team. That said, it sounds like the game and realistically a state title was right there for Cujo and y’all blew it. I’m sure the refs made some bad calls but end of the day, they didn’t make 28 points worth it bad calls.

  30. Yeah Haltom was good, and Tascosa beat them pretty good. The team that lost to Odessa Permian isn't the team we'll see this weekend. Our boys better be ready and stay in their lanes. As the JT fan said, penetration is everything. We beat Garland in 02 because we lived in their backfield.

  34. "This isn't a football team that's built with a bunch of move-ins. This is a team that is Longview built. This is a community team and it started at an early age. That's what I'm so proud of. These kids have been through the program. This is Longview built and it's got a lot of pride to it."- Coach King This has always been what I've loved about Longview. Unlike a few other programs in the area (and hey, more power to those programs), we usually have kids move out in order to be able to start somewhere else. Longview has been homegrown football at its finest. Great win against a quality defense today.

  36. DeSoto is two years removed from having won state and has one of the most athletic football programs around. Everything wrong about the Eagles is off the field. Plain and simple. Its crazy to say Marshall is better than DeSoto right now imo.

  37. nothing against Marshall, but I think most would say DeSoto has more potential than Marshall. 20 yrs ago, it would be the opposite. However, with Marshall in 5a Div.2, Marshall has the ability to make deep playoff runs. 6a Div.1 is tough
