  1. We are devastated. We are numb. And we are broken. I was at the game tonight as my son is a teammate of the young man we lost. I sat in horror as I watched Vonte Mumphrey, sophomore at Alto HS, collapse on the floor. It was only the second period and Alto was leading 17-6 over Mount Enterprise. Vonte had already hit two 3s and made a couple layups. You see, Vonte is special. He was the District Newcomer of the Year for basketball his freshman year (2020) and then the District Newcomer of the Year for football this past fall as a sophomore. He was one of my son’s best friends. A teammate he had played with since Little Dribblers as kids. Vonte didn’t play football his freshman year (he loves basketball more!) but my son talked him into it for sophomore year….in exchange my son agreed to continue to play basketball. He was a natural athlete (track star too!), one of the nicest and most polite young men you would ever meet. He was quiet and reserved and he loved to play basketball. And that’s just what he did tonight. Hundreds of the Alto community showed up. The softball game was stopped and everyone gathered outside the gym, praying. A vigil was held among all the high school and middle school students with a huge circle of folks arm in arm praying for a miracle. It was not to be this night. We do not understand and will never understand. It brought back a flood of memories and opened the wounds from when we lost our Cam’ron Matthews on the football field in 2015. A town should not have to endure one loss, much less two. I am having a tough time wrapping my mind around that. To be present at both games and witness the unthinkable is crushing. I know we will get through this and I know that our community will rally around the Mumphrey family. I know God will use this, but MAN IS IT HARD. Thank you to all those on Smoaky and beyond who have offered up thoughts and prayers. We need them. This is the young man we lost tonight (#9) and my son (#21), who is just devastated. Please say an extra prayer for him and his teammates. You know a small school…..EVERYONE is family and everyone feels the loss. It will be tough to get though this.

  2. Groveton had a winning season every year of the 90’s, with two state title appearances, 1 state championship, 3 trips to the semi’s, 5 trips to the regional quarterfinals during that span. The 90’s are in your 30 year window, being that is only through 2021 currently. The answer to your question is every year of the 90’s and I believe all but 3-4 years of the 2000’s. Since the year 2008, it’s been hit and miss. But only a fool would argue with a history of success at that place, with or without Rodney Thomas.

  3. If teachers were actually teaching subjects and not interjecting their opinions into the curriculum then the world public schools would be better. Unfortunately as shown by many videos and news articles that isn't the case in America today.

  4. Let’s get this straight.... Coach Jackson ‘invented’ basketball in Tenaha. Once coached both the boys and girls teams early in his Tiger tenure with unprecedented success. No success in basketball and limited success in football prior to his arrival! Totally established Tenaha!!!! Coached the football team and the basketball team for twenty years. There was never any question ‘who the head ball coach was’....

  7. This is my problem with the government school defenders. Why not say I care passionately about EDUCATION, instead of public education. The translation is: " I care about education that pays my bills and my family's bills with no threat of termination ever. I care about the school being the way I like it, not the best product for the kids being educated. " The telling part is not one mention about the quality of the education that kids receive, just keeping the mean Christian conservatives from having input.

  8. Nearly 40 Republican lawmakers are calling on President Biden, 79, to take a cognitive test, following the example set by his predecessor, former President Donald Trump. The Republican push for Biden to undergo cognitive testing comes as recent polls have shown Americans are unsure of the president's mental fitness for office. Former physician to the president Rep. Ronny Jackson, R-Texas, led a letter with 37 of his GOP colleagues to Biden on Tuesday expressing their "concern" with Biden’s "current cognitive state." "My colleagues and I are again asking President Biden to immediately undergo a formal cognitive screening exam, such as the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MOCA)," Jackson told Fox News Digital in an email. "As a former physician to three Presidents of the United States, I know what it takes mentally and physically to execute the duties of Commander-in-Chief and Head of State," Jackson continued. "Joe Biden has continually proven to me and to the world that something isn’t right. The American people deserve to have absolute confidence in their President’s cognitive ability." Jackson said Biden’s taking "the cognitive test will be an important first step" in reassuring Americans that the president is fit for office or "in identifying and properly treating symptoms of impairment that are consistent with a variety of cognitive diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, vascular dementia, Parkinson’s, or multiple sclerosis." "This is not a partisan issue. When I discussed taking a cognitive test with President Trump, he was eager to assure the American people and to put the fake news media’s stories to bed," the former presidential doctor wrote. "Why won’t President Biden do the same?" "We can only assume the worst if he doesn’t submit to the same standard that his own party demanded of the last Administration," he added. "The precedent has been set." https://www.foxnews.com/politics/republicans-urge-biden-cognitive-test-assume-worst

  11. Done for a long time. Yep, blacks have been manipulated by white Democrats/liberals for 50 years and the result? The disappearance of the black family. Many hooked on drugs. Children joining gangs & killing each other at an alarming rate. Many addicted to Govt welfare. Little morals or self respect. Education disdained. Yep, Democrats have decimated the black community, and made slaves of them. I doubt history will remember the Democrats of today in a favorable manner.

  14. I see the big cities as tourist destinations. I love going to Atlanta, GA. I freaking hated living there. I love going to Ft. Worth to shop etc, but I didn't like living in the city, which is why I am now just outside of the city in Aledo. You can literally find anything you want to do in Los Angeles, CA but as a college athlete that is all distractions... or whatever Nick Saban called that mess a few years ago. As a college student, your life should be on campus, or associated with the campus. Anything outside of it, will be a distraction at some point. In Norman, in College Station, in Baton Rouge, in Tuscaloosa, those cities by themselves are boring... but on campus and the businesses surrounding campus, it is a wonderland for college students and athletes. I am not sure you get that in at USC or UCLA or the east coast version, Miami.

  20. Based on what? Texas won 5 games in 2010. Where did their recruiting class rank for the '11 class? #4. That's the point he made. REGARDLESS of records, Texas recruits well EVERY year. This isn't anything new. They signed the best DB class ever in 2018. There was no NIL. And they did that after a 7-6 season. Did the announced OL NIL deal help them this year, I'm sure it did, I'll never dispute that, nor should anyone else. But to imply that there is more proof of Texas benefiting from the NIL than A&M in this current overall class is not only ridiculous, it's naive. For A&M to sign not just the #1 class this year, but of all time, with all the reason I already stated in my other comment, is something we can measure.

  32. We are riled up because of your belief it took A&M paying millions to sign this class. You nor anybody else has any proof of that. All I was pointing out is we do have proof of Texas NIL deals. They announced publicly then 4 guys at that position committed shortly after. That’s a direct NIL correlation. Anything you guys are talking about regarding A&M is speculation at best. And it’s fine. If everyone wants to believe A&M bought this class so be it. But you just got your panties in a wad about me insinuating Texas Oline NIL deals was more of a factor than what “might” have happened at A&M. The point is because you guys will passive aggressively talk about A&M buying this class then act like you guys didn’t buy yours. I promise you A&M had Banks and Perkins as two of their most needed players in the class. You really think the program that is throwing around an alleged 40 mil in recruiting just got “outbid” by Texas and their 50k guarantee at the most needed player on either team? Give me a break. Either Texas payed way more, or it was never about money with most of these kids to begin with. I think the NIL thing is so overblown it’s ridiculous. There’s probably only a handful of kids in the entire top 100 that made their decision based on money. I’d say less than 5. You really think A&M let Kentucky pay more than they did for that big OT they wanted? Give me a break guys. You can’t have it both ways. You can’t talk about how A&M basically broke the system with money yet didn’t sign their most needed positions.

  34. No Knock warrants should be used depending upon what the warrant is for. Some crimes are worse than others, so some have to use force to enter, others you can knock for. Each case is different. And that is the way warrants should be observed.
