  2. Um, exactly what I'm saying. Many people teach so that can coach. Schools fill staffs with people across the state with coaches. Take the attachment to teaching away, and you are creating another beast. I said nothing about having a degree. But many of your comments are misguided or ill-informed. Most coaches teach. A select few coaches may get a cushiony job that would still require and educator to be in like proctoring dual credit, PE or DAEP. Keep in mind those spots would still have to be filled even without it tied to coaching. Even fewer coaches have no teaching responsibilities. I spoke on professional vs part time coaches. A coach that is a professional connects with kids in the classroom, in the hallways, in the athletic period, at lunch, etc. A part time coach that paints during the day and shows up for practice and games doesn't meet the standard of quality set by professional coaches. This isn't AAU or pee-wee.

  4. I know you meant no ill intentions, and its something that is mentioned all the time. But to coaches this is one of the issues. They put in time. They've made this their profession. They spend 8 hours a day in the class with other people's kids. Countless hours after school with other people's kids. Time on the weekend for or with other people's kids. Weeks of unpaid time over the summer for other people's kids. The ones that are sticking it out take great pride in what they do for communities and kids. And the response to a shortage of these people is "Grab your local painter that coached some pee-wee and played ball back in the day. He'll be just as good." While pay has been mentioned on this thread, respect, loyalty, and being valued has been mentioned more. The idea of being easily replaceable is why schools are having a hard time replacing coaches.

  5. How many teacher positions do you think are filled because people want to coach? You would immediately lose thousands of teachers in a profession that is already short. Your athletes would be put in a PE class instead of an athletics class like other states. And do you think the quality of coaching would improve with part time workers as opposed to professionals?

  13. I'm a 10 year coach/teacher. The most alarming thing I am seeing now is not young coaches and teachers getting out after 1 or 2 years. That is fairly normal. The trend that is by far more alarming than that is those who have been doing it 10-20 years getting out. On top of that is the lack of those getting in we are in a real tough spot.

  15. That they have to abide buy all rules and laws by the state. If not an employee of the district they don't have to. Much easier to recruit if you have a job that takes you around. Have to be there day in and day out of get subtracted pay. There's several layers of accountability that ties you to coaching and teaching.

  16. I’ve got to wonder, why would teachers be addressing this? Again, this comes under the purview of the parents. It has nothing to do with Reading, Writing or Arithmetic. The fact that they are goes a long way in explaining why American children rank so low when compared to children in other advanced nations. Only explanation that comes to mind, they themselves are perverts. So, sex offenders aren’t allowed anywhere near schools. Let’s apply that same rule to perverted teachers.

  18. It’s not just small districts struggling to fill positions, it’s a problem in bigger ones too. And not just that, we have a work problem period. FedEx can’t get enough workers to get deliveries on time, food services have “now hiring” plastered everywhere…it’s an issue finding people who want to actually put forth effort. There have also been some self-inflicted wounds in the coaching community. Used to, if a coach wanted a raise they went into admin. Now some of the stipends are high enough coaches can stay in coaching longer and get their numbers up. Because of that, you now have that administrator who has 3 years of kindergarten experience working their way up the administrative ladder and it’s helped to turn education at local levels into more of a dog and pony show than education really needs to be. I’m glad coaches are getting paid better, but this is going to be a growing problem. One administrator I’ve heard of in Katy ISD struggled with 1st graders and was a high school campus principal. Instead of holding kids accountable it was always “what are you doing to engage those struggling students?” How many former coaches can you hear saying that? We’re also in a stretch of the entitled coach who has never had to grind through anything and if they’re told no they quit and go pout. We’ve also reached a level of select ball fever that coaches can do what they want job wise and take on a “stipend” of whatever they want to charge for their players. Realistically there are a lot of factors contributing to the educator shortage and I’m afraid that unless our mindset changes as a nation it’s going to get worse…even in Texas.

  35. Goggled this. Traditionally a Professional is someone who derives their income from their specific knowledge or experience as opposed to a worker, hobbyist or amateur without formal education. This meaning is still carries today in areas such as sports. Their are other simpler definitions to this word but this is the one most traditionally recognized.

  38. The only thing that would convince me to give this a chance is if Sam fills Al's role. Because literally no one else could match Dean Stockwell's rare combination of charisma and wry humor, but with Scott Bakula in that spot there would at least be some connection to the original series.

  39. So here's my quick and dirty, spoiler-free review: It was fun! Oh sure, there were various characters or subplots that were re-worked, merged, or wholly removed, but the end result is more than satisfactory. I think this version stands as just as visually-compelling as David Lynch's version and far superior to the SciFi channel's miniseries. While purists may lament some of the changes made (me included), I came away highly entertained. What it lacks in subtext, it more than surpasses in spectacle.

  42. Yeah, and even though Frank Herbert's personal politics were left of center, you never feel like you're being preached at. Dude just tells a good story, with complex and fully-developed characters. I'm sure the new movie is gonna have some SJW themes and/or casting, but fortunately the director has a reputation for focusing more on story than ideology in his past works. Fingers crossed!
