  1. Football is football if all things are equal, but HS Football is far from equal and being successful is much more than just football because there are so many other things that go into being a successful program... Your implication was that Surratt's system is superior and I inferred it as being plug and play into any program.....although Surratt is an incredible coach and his system is a work of art in Carthage, I'm not convinced it would work in the inner city or any multi-school ISD for that matter

  2. Bingo especially SOC...Duncanville is fairly affluent and has really good facilities and a seteup......SOC has a new school and a good setup for DISD, but the challenges they face across the board are plenty.....what Jason Todd has built there is a miracle...go watch their scheme against the Liberty Hill Slot-T last year in the state title game and tell me those dudes cant coach

  3. I'm not surprised, at all, that what we said went right over certain individuals head. Some get it, some don't I guess...lol @LoboFan07 @MattStepp Crazy thing is, nobody called Surratt a bad coach. In fact, I specifically said that he was a better coach than Samples and Todd. Dumb just gonna be dumb.

  4. I called Kirt yesterday to get his thought on the season, but couldn't hear him because he was blaring "We dem' boys" so loud. Told me all I need to know, kirt says we running the table no doubt. And retiredfan was out in his yard with Boys' jersey on throwing touchdown passes to himself pretending it was against Bucs. Mud rump stomping coming to Brady and bucs.

  10. Wow I should have known this thread was gonna go in this direction. No one is saying that Surrat is not an exceptional coach. His record speaks for itself. One has to understand that fit matters. One size does not fit all. Saban was a failure at the pro level but is considered the best college coach in the game today. Like stated coach Dodge is considered one of the greatest high school coaches ever but he failed at some spots. I consider coach Joseph to be a great coach but he has a certain style that no coach outside of Katy could mimic. If he leaves they have to hire within because they do things the Katy way. Surrat created a juggernaut at Carthage but his method is not plug and play. You cannot drop him off in RGV and expect him to win multiple championships. It does not work that way.

  11. Duncanville has a first year OC trying to install a new offense after spring football and a sophomore QB SOC has a first year OC trying to install his offense with a QB who moved in from another school right before spring ball.... It's not a surprise to me at least in Week 1 that both offenses were pretty basic and looked very shaky There's goal post moving because I think there are different nuances to the overall discussion that because SOC and Duncanville have talent Scott Surratt could just walk in there and win without question....my whole point is each school is different, they have their own challenges and sets of issues...so because those situations are unique I'm not convinced its as simple as that

  12. Surratt's system is intricate, I think DISD's lack of a feeder system in the middle school level really hurts their QB development in more complex offensive systems and I think it takes time to absorb it all, so in DISD you are losing two years of base development in the middle school level. Carthage is a total program top to bottom and in Dallas because of the lack of feeders, the lack of coaches and teaching slots that are available, the distribution of funds, lack of facilities it inhibits the ability to devleop that kind of program IMO

  13. So you think if you put Surrat at Duncanville or SOC he would win a championship. I highly doubt it. He does not have the face a Kay or Dodge at Carthage. Your comparing apples and oranges.

  14. I’m not surprised that Jimbo went with the more experienced QB as his starter. What I am surprised by, however, is that Max Johnson has been named QB2, making Conner Weigman 3rd on the depth chart. I’m curious your thoughts on this?

  15. Requires a few stops...which we made. Got up 34-20.....then held them for a 3rd time in a row.....a booming punt down to the 1 flipped the field.... they made a stop, got a score..... and depth started to slowly kick in. Penalty killed our hopes on next drive....boom tie ball game. OT...and we were gassed. Kept scratching and fighting but fell short. We're gonna be physical. We're gonna be frustrating for DCs to play. 4th and 6 ain't no punting down unless you got us inside our 20. If I was Center, I woulda gave their punter the game ball. Planting us on the 1 took away half our playbook. No sane coach is gonna pitch the option or run a jet sweep out of their endzone. Enabled them to clog the middle and create a stop. Momentum was all Tatum until that punt.

  16. I fully expect Carthage fans to stick up for thier coach but this thread was not an attack on Coach Surrat. It was a Carthage fan that stated his method would work anywhere. This is were the disagreement revealed itself. No way could Surrat do with Samples did at Skyline. A school with no feeders, kids had provide their on transportation too practice and a 6A roster that was smaller than Carthage. None of this changes his coaching credentials but there challenges he would face that he has never faced before. Could he win a championship at Duncanville. I really don't know because Northshore and coach Kay are no pushovers. Duncanville's lack of execution in the fourth quarter is the reason they don't have a ring and that falls on the head coach. That same coach has had some bad luck also but it is what it is.

  17. this is such a bad take. Samples has built programs wherever he has been. Duncanville is no different. They were horrible before he got there. Surratt would not know how to handle the situation that Samples thrives in and probably vise versa. Todd is a disciple of Samples and has now built SOC up to be like what Samples creates. Surratt is not a god, there are more ways to do it than just his way.

  19. Ok man lol. Bow down to the all greatness that is Scott Surratt. He can do no wrong.

  20. Surratt has also never opened the season playing a team such as Duncanville, with the talent that team has on that field. Throw in the 3244 student enrollment discrepancy on top of things. Fact that SOC kept that game close at all, is amazing.

  21. I gotta give some credit to our coaches and other kids as well. Coaches have made it easy to learn and our kids are learning the system well. I thought we would be sloppy for a few weeks but we already look pretty comfortable running this new offense.

  22. It is...two different discussions here....as I stated earlier SOC and Duncanville are two totally different communities....but neither are plug and play Duncanville and Cedar Hill however are very similar places, they have a set up to win...there its more about being a kid magnet, because the other pieces are in place..... SOC has the inner city challenges that you have to deal with.... Its not just about being a good Coach at either place...there's more to it.....which is the point of the overall thread, every school and community is different and its not just plug and play...just because a Coach wins in one place and is considered a great coach doesnt mean its a fit at every school

  23. Surratt is a helluva coach no doubt, what he's done in Carthage is top tier! No one's disrespecting him, you seem to be putting to much thought into it

  25. Disrespecting your coach? lollll dude. Surratt is a fantastic coach, no one denies that. But do you seriously think that man could walk into say Dallas Bryan Adams, and produce a state championship? Surratt, no doubt, has created the absolute perfection situation for himself at Carthage. He has no reason to leave and undoubtedly will retire there. But your red eye glasses are seriously beyond red if you think that he would be able to go to an inner city school and win with any type of regularity like he has at Carthage.

  28. But I do remember a few years ago when the Longhorns was playing the Bulldogs down in New Orleans at the Superdome and the Bulldog started to go after that Longhorn, but then he ran away when he saw that side of beef didn’t have no nadsak to bite on.

  29. Bishop Lynch does have some beef on the offensive line to match up with Celina, but I don't think they have the skill players or defense to stop Celina's skill players and offense this season. Maybe it will be a good test for Celina's D-line. Not sure the Friars have a seasoned QB either......Bentley for Celina will only get more confident as each game goes by this season. Something about senior seasons for talented college-bound prospects.....they finally put all their skills together for a great year.

  31. Both of these teams will have plenty of blowouts this year. But from what i see i cant say they are good teams. They are teams with alot of good players. The difference? Imagine if one of them were coached by someone like a Surratt. Nothing against those two gentlemen, they are very accomplished. Add a superior system to superior talent and good gosh!!

  34. Kilgore will correct mistakes they made. They are a good football team. I believe they will play good enough to be in the ball game with Gilmer deep into the fourth quarter. Gilmer will be at home and they very seldom loose at home and have to be the favorite. I don’t believe they will blow Kilgore out. Carthage is loaded on offense and now we know the defense is also outstanding. Kilgore can get pressure on the QB and play the run very well. I heard several Gilmer posters on here say their O line did not do very well on pass blocking. If that is the case, Kilgore can keep it close. Gilmer by 7.

  35. It will be closer than that. Maybe 42-24 type game. Gilmer should win comfortably, but I bet the K Dogs will be mad as heck after getting embarrassed by Carthage.

  38. We didn’t struggle. The scoreboard doesn’t reflect the domination. We turned the ball over in the red zone 3 times, and missed a FG. We were down 17-9 and was up 31-17 with under a minute to go. They got a trash time TD. Lufkin should have blown that game wide open but mistakes kept that from happening. Our defense dominated them all night. One of their scores was a scoop and score off a fumble from our RB. We played sloppy, and still dominated them. They are definitely down from the past couple of years. Lufkin is a little improved from last year IMO. Our defense has a chance to be something but the offense is… Blah. We still don’t have a QB and the line is just inconsistent as they come. Defense has a chance to keep us in some games early before the offense gives them away lol. Obviously we won’t compete for the district championship but I think we have a chance to win that 4th spot and get back to the playoffs.

  40. Ok, just hear me out. Over the last few years.....from 4A down.....look at all the teams playing for titles or sittin 5 rounds deep. And the teams that have constantly been 5 or 6 rounds deep for what seems forever. Take a look at how many of them run some type of ground and pound. Franklin(T), Waskom(Flex), Gunter(Flex), Brock(was the T), Liberty Hill(T in 5A ball), Pleasant Grove(T), Kennedale(T), several more that I'm sure I'm missing. Look at the success Newton has had in the T. The ground and pound teams that have mastered it are consistently deep in the playoffs year in and year out. It ain't flashy.....it ain't pretty....but it works. And you can pull it off even in years where the talent isn't as rich. Jmo but when the boys get it down....its gonna work....and it might just change your mind.

  42. Thank you for doing this. I logged in for the first time in a while today with the intentions of creating the thread and here it is. Good job and well said. As a dad with a senior my heart has been shattered. And not just any senior, but one who has dreamed his whole life of playing for the Alto Yellowjackets. He was practically born with a football (any ball really) in his hand. He’s that kid; you know the kind. The one who has been to every Friday ballgame (and most Thursdays) since he was born. He has cried when the Jackets lost (just about inconsolable when the 28-game win steak came to an end the first week at San Augustine…and he was 3). He learned to count by 7s if that tells you anything. If the boys were playing ball, he wanted to be in the middle of it. And most of the time it was older cousins and their friends or kids who would meet him in the halls of AHS that he would juke and pretend to be running for touchdowns. He played peewee ball in Lufkin with his Alto buddies and dreamed of the day when he got to play for his school. We have had to readjust our thinking and make the best out of a horrible situation that is out of our control. That has been hard because of the hopes and dreams of a lifetime and the realization that those have been taken away. The night of August 2nd helped me to put things in perspective. Close to 100 folks showed up at practice to support the boys. I sat in silence and didn’t really talk to anyone; I didn’t want to. But people showed up and it was comforting. Kind of like grieving and mourning a death, I sat and watched as my boy and his teammates had a better practice than the day before. I was pretty amazed at how upbeat everyone was. I couldn’t imagine what the coaches had said to the boys to have them so motivated and focused. Then I remembered that’s who these kids are. That’s what life has taught them….to take what you have been given and make the best of it. Tornadoes, portable buildings, pandemic, a 2-8 season as sophomores when they were district champs in 7th, 8th, and 9th grades….and the absolutely devastating loss of a teammate and friend on a basketball court just this February. The hardest of them all. Earth shattering and life changing. The season and the playoff run was to be dedicated to Vonte. And all these boys wanted to do was to go and make a run for Vonte, #9 running back and newcomer of the year last season. As practice continued I turned and heard a familiar voice. It was Meka, Vonte’s mom. She and her family had come up to encourage the kids. Here is this lady who will not get to watch her baby on that football field this season ENCOURAGING US. I went over and hugged her and she spoke some wonderful words to me. And that, my friends, puts things in perspective. I get to watch my son play the game that fills his heart with joy. 2 scrimmages and 10 games; it’s not what we hoped or dreamed of but I know Meka would give anything just to be able to see her boy again. She said she would be at every single game cheering our boys and to just keep on playing. And that’s what we are doing and what we will do, just as the 94 Yellowjacket teams who have come before this 95th version have done through the years…play ball. We will play for Vonte, his family, our brothers on the field, coaches, our school, and our town. Our LOVE of the game. We will gather every Friday night under the lights and celebrate the team we love and the game that brings us together. We will remember this time and give thanks for the blessing of another day watching our boys, cheerleaders, and band give it all they got. And I will cherish every second. This guy of mine, #21 of the Alto Yellowjackets, (and his teammates) deserve nothing less. He has worked his tail off for years and I know that he will fight every week and leave it all on the field. He does every single time and I couldn’t be more proud. Go Jackets!
