  1. Who’s your pick for game of the week this week? To me, and it’s not even close, is Mount Vernon at Winnsboro. Two undefeated ranked teams with high octane offenses.

  3. In a time far ago, manhood was sometimes measured by football, standing in the community was set sometimes by the 52 yard bomb or the ferocious defensive play or the willingness to stand and fight with your brothers on the team...times and ethos have changed, mom's are raising children without dad's,grandparents are raising their baby's baby, errant drugs and other bs are permiating the schools along with changing cultures of what is man/women or he she it.They them is slowly creeping into what was at one time,a rite of passage to many

  4. I think the answer can be long and complex but I will do my best to state my opinions on this matter. In my opinion there is a nation wide movement of kids getting away from football. As we learn and understand more about the long term affects of football injuries more people are encouraging their kids to try something else. When I was in school everybody played football but you don't see that today. You see kids playing basketball and baseball only where that use to never happen. Why is that? Well, its easier on the body to play baseball and basketball and its easier on the parents at a young age to find teams to play on. There are about 16 million travel baseball teams so its easy to get in. There aren't just a ton of little league football teams and out of those that are playing a lot of them aren't teaching football the right way which again, leads to injury. Kids have a lot of things they can do that don't involve football.... The smaller towns you listed are dealing with kids leaving. People graduate from those towns and they don't come back because there isn't anything to come back to. Those that are stuck in those small town have to travel for work or they take really low paying jobs that causes them to live in the poverty level. Out of those two options the parents that have to travel to the bigger areas to work can just drop their kids off at a bigger nicer school and they have more opportunity than their neighbor down the street because they are going to a bigger school. The other option I mentioned is to stay in those small towns and work the lesser jobs and earn less money. The majority of those families struggle and those kids either start working very early or are really behind because they never could afford to play high level little league sports. The bigger towns are hanging in there because they are striving on tradition and still a decent number of kids (including those from surrounding smaller towns). As far as the small schools that are good year in and year out....their down time will soon be coming. There just isn't as many kids playing as there use to be.... I know I was all over the place but I hope it makes sense.

  5. I’m gonna reference Atlanta, linden, Queen City. Just because I’m from cass county. When graduated we had 190 in our class. Now it’s considered a big class if they have 125. Linden had around 500 kids in the High School, now they have 150ish. Queen City, has dropped 150 kids as well. In the 90s to mid 2003, Atlanta put 8 kids in the NFL. Since 2003 graduating class there has only been one get a tryout for practice squad. Someone may ask why? There is not enough good Jobs in our area to keep people here anymore. Lone star steel, oilfield, and other industries has closed down or moved. Now I will say this, Bowie county is about to explode so maybe we get some trickle affect from that. Also, I think the bigger cities has more access to the proper training and better knowledge to nutrition. Plus like someone said more kids are not playing unlike before.

  6. If they quit having it at the actual Cotton Bowl then I would rather have it on the home campuses than in Arlington.

  7. It's by far the best environment I've ever been a part of as far as sporting event goes, and it's not even close. And a big part of that is the Cotton Bowl. It's pretty outdated and crammed, but the environment with the fair going on outside, usually always good weather, mixed with the craziness of that game is unbeatable. If they ever moved it, that game would never be the same. Half of the stadium is a home game and the other half is an away game, and holy crap does that place get loud.

  8. That's the great thing about this game. All bets are off. Records truly don't matter come "high noon" (on the East Coast lol) at the Cotton Bowl. Also, call me crazy, but I like that old Cotton Bowl stadium.

  10. Henderson is a long, long ways from that point now...and it looks like the program is getting even farther away week by week. The kids deserve better.

  12. I can't speak for anyone but hughes springs and gilmer. I grew up and graduated from hughes springs. We followed work to gilmer in 2017. It was the biggest blessing we've ever saw moving from "small town" hs. Hughes Springs at the time and I still think they don't, didn't have a youth football league. Participation in football was low in high school because morale was low. Gilmer is just a different dynamic all the way around. Kids start getting groomed for football in kindergarten. It's a way of life. My son is going on his 4th year of little league and is loving it. Hs just doesn't offer that especially since lone star steel and wheeling machine shut down.

  17. Absolutely. Renovate and keep it alive at all costs. God forbid they move it to Jerry World. We will riot.

  18. Count me among the vocal few who would rather "renovate" the current site than move it elsewhere. Yeah yeah, it's outdated, too small, problematic, etc. But it's also a singular experience. It's worth holding onto (if at all possible).

  27. No one started a conversation for this game yet so here goes. I think most Henderson people are a mixture of speechless from being in shock and following momma’s advice about what to do when you can’t say something nice. Athens here’s yalls shot for the first time since Game 4 of the 2001 season (2 weeks after 9/11) to get a win. Game 6: Athens (2-4; 0-2) at Henderson (0-5; 0-1) 36th meeting Henderson leads all-time 26 to 7 and there have been 2 ties. First meeting: 1934; Athens 14 - Henderson 7 Last meeting: 2021; Henderson 58 - Athens 41 Henderson has won 15 out of the last 16, including the last 6 in a row. Athens’ last win was by a score of 31-21 in 2001. Athens’ 14-7 win in the schools’ first ever meeting back in 1934 was the Lions’ only loss that season. The schools have met once in the playoffs … an opening round bi-district game in 1992 won by Henderson 40-14. Last year’s game was a shootout instead of a blowout mainly because of one man … Athens’ returning senior QB Ty Arroyo who had 434 yards of total offense (298 passing & 136 rushing), ran for 4 TDs, and passed for another. 4AD1 rankings: DCTF/AP: Athens - 67 (down 7) Henderson - 69 (down 1) MaxPreps: Athens - 42 Henderson - 56 CalPreps power ranking: Athens - 42 Henderson- 56 Predictions: DCTF: Henderson by 2 CalPreps: Athens 35 - Henderson 34 Henderson has lost 10 games in a row overall (as well as the last 6 district games). This qualifies as the second longest losing streak in school history after a 12 game losing streak during the 2007-08 seasons. This season Henderson is 0-5. The program has had 2 seasons (2006 & 2008) that ended with a record of 1-9. Henderson has never had an 0-10 season in school history. Friday night will be Coach Othell Robinson’s 16th game as the Lions’ head coach. He is 3-12 overall, 1-6 in district games, and 0-0 in playoff games at Henderson.

  29. Statistically OU was trending down with Lincoln Riley, and going to the SEC was the writing on the wall for him. He didn't want any part of that. Riley was fortunate to strike gold with QB's in the transfer portal, which imo masked the downward trend OU was on the longer he was there.

  37. Yup. There are numerous screenshots like this being passed around Sooner faithful. The number of blown alignments and blown assignments we're seeing has been difficult to watch. But at the same time, we have guys who are learning a completely new system, philosophy, and playbook. Venables is wisely shouldering all the blame thus far. Even though it's the players who are failing to execute on the field, the burden of preparation falls on the coaches. Obviously I am not happy to be taking this kind of a beating, especially this early in the season, but I do believe it is for the best. OU has danced with mediocrity for far too long. While it was enough to dominate the Big XII conference for over a decade, our days in this mid-tier conference are winding down. The Sooners must evolve. I remain optimistic for the future with the things I've seen myself (and others I know about via "sources") that Venables has the trajectory going in the right direction. Most of my concerns at this point are centered on getting the right personnel in place, and getting university administration to rise to the occasion.

  40. I haven't seen them since the Carthage game. Have they changed personnel or are they just playing better and getting the schemes down on defense. Do you think they have improved drastically since then? I picked Kilgore to win, just need to know if my money is safe! (Just kidding. I do not gamble on sports, especially high school sports. Please don't report me to the man. @RETIREDFAN1)
