  1. I am by no means a Gilmer fan, about as far from it as you can get. But I have been pulling for them this season because nearly everyone in East Texas was throwing them under the bus in September, including most of their own Smoaky fans. "Worst defense we've had since the 90's" I remember reading on here... and "we'll make the playoffs and probably get knocked out in the 2nd round". It was nice to see the Gilmer staff and players prove all the haters wrong by knocking off #1 in the quarterfinals and then for the ultimate irony.... they held the #1 scoring offense in the state to 32 points below their season scoring average in the title game. Helluva coaching job by Metzel and #1 is a bad, bad dude.

  2. Thanks for the props! So here it is: 1. Gilmer was +1 in the turnover battle, and that was the difference in the game. 2. That being said, Gilmer took a knee inside the 10 to end the game. If Bellville kicks the field goal (instead of the interception) who’s to say Gilmer doesn’t win yet another game this year on another game ending field goal? 3. I’m not sure if Henderson is the best Buckeye of all time. I think I might still give that to Stump or Kris Boyd. But this was the best individual season of any Buckeye ever. Routinely got hard yards after first contact. 4. Gilmer Defense. Wow. Best showing of the year. And that side of the ball is pretty young for Gilmer. Ditto about Gilmer Dline being a beast next season. 5. This was supposed to be a showdown between the speed of Gilmer and the strength of Belleville. But Gilmer was the more physical team almost all night long. 6. 99 was a great player, but not a game wrecker. He made some plays, but Gilmer did a good job of running away from him or allowing him to overrun the play and take himself out of the action. He didn’t have near the impact on the game as Mack did in that 2014 game. This was just a great season and a great group of kids for Gilmer. The team and the entire community came together. I could do a whole different post on Gilmer, state championships, and tragedy. Football season is over, but loving and supporting these kids will continue. Hopefully this helped some small way in the healing process.

  3. Congrats Gilmer on your 4th state title in football. How ironic is it that the defense was the weak link early in the year, and it’s the defense that won the close games when it counted down the stretch in the playoffs.

  4. Like I said from the beginning, whoever wins will be the better team. Gilmer is the better team. I never said who would win the game, only countered crazy talk running Bellville down. Bellville gave a good account, but Gilmer is the better team.

  5. This game alone was worth the month's subscription to Bally. Congrats Gilmer!

  6. I remember you saying , you did not see a scenario in which Gilmer could win this game. Is that not the same as picking Belleville. Just asking.

  7. Beast from the East, this year it is Gilmer. Two East Texas teams in 4A, Chapel Hill didn’t finish like they had hoped but Gilmer did. East Texas still the King of 4A football. Gilmer played their rear ends off today. Congratulations

  8. Way to show up and speak up, says a lot about you. Bellville is a good team and Gilmer won tonight. Great job by both teams, no heads hanging.

  9. 5 pretty equal teams in this division but Gilmer is the champ.

  10. Especially when you have refs that are not use to seeing the offense run well.

  11. I would have my 2 DTs cutting down the 3 interior OL every play making a huge pile.

  12. Just goes to show you. 95 percent of the time you have to be able to run and pass to win championships. When you become one dimensional. The defense can pen its ears back and send the house.

  13. "Pride goeth before a fall" You post hard for your team all year and rightly so........but maybe show some humility in this moment

  14. As a HUGE Carthage fan and supporter, that win by Gilmer was in no way a fluke. Gilmer WON that game on both sides of the ball. To say that was a fluke would mean that you didn't watch the game Texlov. Gilmer deserved and earned that win. I hope that those Buckeyes dominate Bellville today and bring the ring back east on 20 with them!

  15. Marty Moore passed away yesterday. He was a longtime AD/HFC in the area at Union Grove and Hawkins.

  16. This Aledo team is crazy good! The QB from Aledo Hauss Hejny is something to watch. Don't know much about Smithson Valley. Hopefully they can keep it close.

  18. Metzel’s interview after the game was just great! He gets it. He assembled a great staff, many with HC experience. All with the same mindset. Good stuff.

  19. Truth is the SV QB is just not that capable. At this level you better have a very good QB that can throw the ball and is mobile.

  20. Metzel has been to 3 state championships in 4 years as head coach. Knocked out last year by the eventual champion Carthage. More importantly, he has established a culture that permeates through the program. I know everyone likes to complain about the coach, but it’s hard to argue with that kind of success.

  21. It can be whatever you want it to be. Transcript is available for everyone. I said many times that if Gilmer were to win they would be the better team. Nothing changed.

  24. Most of the big guns other than Hranicky are back. Could easily see them back in the finals, but as mentioned previously, Carthage will be difficult for the next two years.

  25. Quite a few coming back. Would not expect a big drop off. Knowing what I know about what Carthage has in the que, it is hard to pick against Carthage for the next two years.

  26. This is the Gilmer’s HC’s 8th state championship game. His 4th title. Same for several other coaches on his staff. I think he knows what he’s doing.

  29. Bellville needs to sprinkle in some sweeps or a misdirection reverse. They are sucking in Gilmer and have a ton of room on the edges

  30. Eh, it's what they do, they've stayed in it within a score thus far. The big plays have hurt both sides really...the INT was critical, otherwise it's a 1 point game. I'm just happy to see a competitive game.

  31. Gilmer is legit this year. Bellville will have their hands full today.

  32. Still a hell of a season, CHill. Just unfortunate ran into the BuzzSaw that was Anna today; Congrats Anna, congrats CHill on getting this far and showed some fight 2nd half.

  33. Good to see C hill not give up, moving the ball better and holding Anna scoreless 2nd half.. Anna just a better team today

  34. There is no telling where this team will be in the fall because there isn’t even a staff in place and kids are still leaving. WAY too early to start talking records for next season.

  35. Wow...they are just off...sucks to have a good year and come out in the SC and play your worst game of the year. I realize Anna is playing really good ball, but a lot of these mistakes have been unforced errors, and wouldn't change he outcome. It just looks really bad from a preparation/execution perspective.

  37. I got nothing but respect for Franklin, y'all got a hell of a program, coaching staff, and kids there. It was a great game despite the things being said. Don't think anyone would've thought a low scoring game as such. These two teams were deserving to be there. There's no question in my mind about that. Hope we may get a chance to play again. Maybe a future non-district game. I was down sick pretty much the whole week, so I didn't get to say my normal during the week. Wish I was able to make the game and even the state games as that. It's been about 8 years since I've missed them for 3A.

  38. Lionpride08 - you are starting to sound like the PG fans after the loss to Carthage. Man just congratulate Koff and move on. It was a fantastic game. The best and most competitive so far in Arlington IMO. No need to post pictures of random people posting on social media.

  39. Not football related but the Texas Longhorn volleyball team won last night and is one step closing to defending their National Championship Sunday at 2pm against Nebraska. Hook em!

  40. I know y`all been having fun with 89Falcon, and he's trolling, but #99 for Bellville is an awesome player. Any team in Texas would want him on their team. I'm looking forward to seeing him play in person on Friday........The same way that Bellville fans should be looking forward to seeing #1 for Gilmer play in person. You won't likely see speed like #1 has anytime again soon, and just like #99 for Bellville, any team in Texas would want #1 from Gilmer on their team. Two fantastic athletes. Bellville runs their offense exceptionally well AND unlike a lot of slot/wing T offenses, they have some RBs who are darn good athletes and have some good speed. Seems like a lot of slot/wing T offensive teams rely on perfect execution and timing to get yards (Liberty Hill in 2007 was an absolute machine), Bellville has this and good athletes on top of it. They are going to move the ball and score some points on Gilmer, that's a given. They will probably score a good amount of points to be honest. That being said, I watched the Bellville/Wimberley game and it was a great one. I love the Wimberley QB. He' built kind of like a fire hydrant and doesn't really look like much, but I would take him on my team any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Great effort from that kid. He was 24 for 31 passing for 275 yards and ran the ball 40 times for 200 yards.....And he does not have one single receiver/running back that could start for Gilmer and he wouldn't be the starting QB for Gilmer either. That's not a knock on the Wimberley kids, it's just that Gilmer is exceptionally talented at the skill positions. If the Gilmer coaches implement the right game plan Gilmer, it should have the Buckeyes scoring a lot of points, and I do mean a lot of points. So as has been the story of this unexpected season from the Buckeyes, they will have to outscore Bellville, and the right game plan will do just that. Gilmer seems to ALWAYS struggle with slot/wing T offenses, so it's going to take a near perfect effort from the Buckeyes, but they have come this far, why not win just one more game that they are picked to lose. Safe travels to everyone.

  41. No I counted one of those as a two-yard gain when it was a negative-two. I hate how they do those boxes as well and put the yardage before loss first.

  43. Enjoyed the game, my team didnt win but that life. I still think Daingerfield is more athletic, but not as well-coached as Gunter.

  45. My son and I were talking about the outstanding performance of Bussey last night, especially his ability to find the open receiver and throw darts to them. Several times he had to change his arm angle and throw at odd angles but he still put the ball right on target. I think like many others watching were shocked at how great of a qb he is. Everybody knows he is a great runner, that was obvious, but those passes and his ability to check down to second and third targets are qualities very few high school quarterbacks possess. It's a shame he probably won't get to play qb at the next level. At a major D-1 like A&M he will most likely be a free safety/sometimes running back/receiver. I'm just thankful I got to watch one of the best all around athletes perform on such a big stage and get rewarded for all the hard work he has put in. Congratulations to #10 and all of the Timpson Bears along with their coaching staff and community!! Enjoy the moment!!!
