  1. Here's my question, why was this sent to the UIL on Dec 1 for something that happened in June?

  2. The Football season is over, and Duncanville has won another State Championship and Desoto has won another state championship, cementing them as the 2 best football programs in the state of Texas. However, I'm betting it won't as mean as much in Duncanville or Desoto as it will in Gunter, or Timpson, or Gilmer. Because the heart of small towns is their football team. Gilmer is like most small towns. It's a friendly, close-knit community, but it is still a very divided community. Divided by religion, culture, ethnicity, and socioeconomics. However, on a Friday night, everybody is a Buckeye. The bond to the Buckeyes goes beyond denomination, economics, race, and everything else in the community. But this is not just true on Friday night. It's true throughout the year. When unspeakable tragedy hit the Gilmer community, the football team rallied around the city and the city rallied around the football team. It was the selling of football shirts that helped provide for the families and pay for the services. It was to football coaches who were putting out extra seats at the funeral. It was the football players who loved on and surrounded a teammate. The whole town came together around the football team. It's why the emotional release was so huge on Friday. It's why Metzel spoke with tears in his interview. He wasn't a head coach talking about a game; he was a pastor, a mentor, and a community member talking about how young students became young men and carried the hopes and hurts of their town. It's why we love the Gilmer broadcasters: as homerish as they can be at times, they love the kids and know them personally. It just means more in a small town. I know the same could be said this year for Timpson and Terry Bussey. For these small towns, football becomes a reminder of what we can do and be when we put aside our differences and come together for a common goal. Hopefully, we can learn to move this from the football field and into our everyday actions with those in our community.

  3. Sometimes in life you have to realize that not all things are taken as you intended or as wish they were. After being confronted about a couple of things and reflecting over the last week , I have been made aware of things I have posted. People who know me know that I say a lot of things “tongue in cheek “. I posted some things in that manner and also posted things just to get a rise out of fellow posters. I am sorry they were not taken that way. From now on I will not be posting any negative comments about any offense or of any nature. I surely did not intend to make things sound like I was belittling a coach as a person. A coach’s decision for his team is just that- his decision. Once again my apologies and only positive comments from now on. Good bless yall and have a great week coming up.

  4. I know y`all been having fun with 89Falcon, and he's trolling, but #99 for Bellville is an awesome player. Any team in Texas would want him on their team. I'm looking forward to seeing him play in person on Friday........The same way that Bellville fans should be looking forward to seeing #1 for Gilmer play in person. You won't likely see speed like #1 has anytime again soon, and just like #99 for Bellville, any team in Texas would want #1 from Gilmer on their team. Two fantastic athletes. Bellville runs their offense exceptionally well AND unlike a lot of slot/wing T offenses, they have some RBs who are darn good athletes and have some good speed. Seems like a lot of slot/wing T offensive teams rely on perfect execution and timing to get yards (Liberty Hill in 2007 was an absolute machine), Bellville has this and good athletes on top of it. They are going to move the ball and score some points on Gilmer, that's a given. They will probably score a good amount of points to be honest. That being said, I watched the Bellville/Wimberley game and it was a great one. I love the Wimberley QB. He' built kind of like a fire hydrant and doesn't really look like much, but I would take him on my team any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Great effort from that kid. He was 24 for 31 passing for 275 yards and ran the ball 40 times for 200 yards.....And he does not have one single receiver/running back that could start for Gilmer and he wouldn't be the starting QB for Gilmer either. That's not a knock on the Wimberley kids, it's just that Gilmer is exceptionally talented at the skill positions. If the Gilmer coaches implement the right game plan Gilmer, it should have the Buckeyes scoring a lot of points, and I do mean a lot of points. So as has been the story of this unexpected season from the Buckeyes, they will have to outscore Bellville, and the right game plan will do just that. Gilmer seems to ALWAYS struggle with slot/wing T offenses, so it's going to take a near perfect effort from the Buckeyes, but they have come this far, why not win just one more game that they are picked to lose. Safe travels to everyone.

  5. I prefer to stay off Lobo threads 99.9999% of the time....BUT..... Every. Single. Year. Outside of one season in the last 20 years we endure some Lobo fans and outsiders calling for King's job. Baffles my mind. I'm not saying King is perfect...I'm not saying he doesn't make mistakes....I'm not even saying he doesn't lose games for Longview.....BUT..... Longview has been rich in talent for the last 30-40 years. The King years have been the richest in Lobo history. How many title game appearances since he's been here? How many semifinal appearances? Quarterfinals? It's absolutely unreal. We are talking Katy, Judson, SLC, ET, LT type stuff....obviously without all the titles. Is a title the LONE measure of a successful season??? Go back and look at the 90's......80's....70's....... all still rich in history...but NOTHING like the last 20 have been like. Be careful what you ask for. You could return to that "mediocrity". I'm not saying the Lobos WOULD return to that. I'm saying it COULD happen. All of a sudden those late playoff losses could become distant memories you could only wish for. I cannot fathom wanting him gone. Sometimes the better team doesn't win. Sometimes you aren't the better team. Would the outcome of some of these playoff losses be any different with a different coach? Bigger question: Would you have even made it as far as you did without him???? Congrats to the Lobos on another successful season. You guys are what so many of us are striving to become.

  6. Dude, respectfully... you have no idea what you're talking about. No. Idea. I don't mean that in a derisive sense, but a very literal one. Longview is an extraordinarily difficult place to be the AD, and it has nothing to do with X's and O's. There are particular challenges at a big 5A/6A district that smaller ones cannot imagine. There are challenges unique to Longview that smaller towns will never know. There are a multitude of things that King is a master of, that literally no one on this forum is aware of, but that I see on a daily basis. Take him to task about his playcalling, sure, fine. That comes with the job. Every coach is gonna get called out for stuff like that. <shrug> I don't care. But his leadership within the department, the campus, the district, and entire LISD community is without peer. I'll die on that hill.

She passed away in March. He had just gotten a positive report but developed an infection this week his body couldn’t fight off. His daughter reports that he passed peacefully in the night.

  18. Just initial thoughts... Our defense alone will be a big part of this. No doubt, Lancaster came out in the first game against us throwing everything they had. I see a lot of people saying Lancaster gave us a game for a half in that first one. Reality was the first quarter was truly the only time that game was close. Longview scored 17 straight after being tied at 14 after 1. Two of Lancaster's scores came on unreal, fluke plays...including that insane punt return and just an end of the game unreal 80+ yarder when the game was completely dead and over with. Longview ran at will against the Tigers in the first meeting, and no doubt they're going to try and make us throw the ball more but even without Tatum, I do believe we'll believe able to move the ball on them. Be able to finish drives will once again be the biggest deal. We have to get touchdowns instead of settling for field goals. Another positive is we won't be in freaking Lancaster this go around. No dealing with half turned on scoreboards, not having to deal with refs being pressured by LT's staff the entire dang night with these phantom personal foul calls, not having to deal with dimmed lights the entire night. The only reason that game was even as close as it was was because we were playing at Humphrey Stadium. That sounds incredibly homer of me, and probably is, but anyone that watched that game (and has seen their team play there season) has said the same. Longview just needs to play Lobo football, and we'll be fine despite the obvious injury.

  20. I don’t post often. I’m a coach at Mount Enterprise and not really my place to post. Just wanted to share that this is a full circle moment for me. The reason I decided to become a teacher was because of my grandad, Billy Bob Trimble. He taught at Carlisle for most of his career. He passed when I was in Junior high, and never got to see me play, graduate, or coach. I know it’s a big game for all, but wanted the Carlisle folks to know I look forward to being on the campus my grandad worked at. good luck on Friday!

  21. I can solve this problem in a heartbeat. Coaches quit bing a jerk to officials ESPECIALLY in sub varsity games you are lucky to have officials. School Administrators start kicking jerk parents and fans out of games. Second time they offend ban them from schools. That silliness will stop overnight. UIL bump Minimum pay for sub vqarsity games to $100 / game. PLUS mileage. Bump MINIMUM pay for Varsity games to $200 PLUS mileage. And do NOT for one second tell me schools cannot afford this. I was a coach and teacher for thirty years. Every school I ever worked at threw away more money in a week than officials cost. Schools if you want to ensure your kids have officials make Officials WANT to come to your school by paying them in cash THAT night. If your Admin says "we can't do that" (and they can btw its just a little extra work for them god forbid people in Admin have to do that) get booster club to pay them that night. AND Feed them......WELL not a Concession Stand Hotdog either! If your Admin is too inept to pay them in cash AD;s do what it takes to make sure these guys are not waiting for their check for two and three months. And yes this is standard operating procedure for most schools. I've even seen AD'S put officials checks in their desks for weeks to "pay back" officials that they feel did not do a good job. Trust me, officials talk to each other about schools that do a good job of taking care of them and which schools make it REALLY hard to go there. Guess which schools usually have officials and which do not. When you have a shortage of workers it is because of two things. Pay is not high enough and / or the work conditions stink. Eco 101. It is amazing that schools just throw up their hands at the drop of the hat and say "there is nothing we can do" that is BS. Example: 6 Man schools have the hardest time getting officials. Many are having to play sub varsity and Varsity on the same night to address this. I know a place that has Officials FIGHTING to go call games there. Strawn, Texas. They pay in cash AND the HC feeds the Officials no matter what the sport after the games. At Mary's. He has an open tab there for officials. Take a hint. Schools and the UIL better pull their head out of their fourth point of contact. If the current trend holds you will be having coaches call sub varsity games. And your Varsity Schedules will be getting rearragned around when the officials can show up. To sum up show these folks some respect.

  22. There's adults in their 50s and 60s that work all day in the heat, so HS kids in great shape can do it...the key is you gotta acclimate to it you can't go from sitting in the AC to 3 hours of football practice...you have to be out in it getting adjusted over a period of time

  23. I’m working in it every day. I will spend next week in College Station teaching live fire training at the largest fire/ rescue training school in the world. I will be 50 in less than three weeks. There’s a guy that I work with at the fire training school that is in his 70s, that took time off from his retirement gig as a high school football official so he could watch his grandson play, that will be there all week, gearing up in full firefighter PPE and going into burn rooms where it’s hot enough to bake chicken. Saying that it’s too hot to practice football outside is just ridiculous. It’s an opportunity for kids to learn how to manage the elements and take care of themselves in it. Learn proper hydration, taking frequent breaks, steps for cooling down, etc. 99% of them will not play football past high school. But many of them will need to be able to do manual labor. The real world is a tough environment. Better that they learn to deal with it now. GOOD TIMES CREATE WEAK MEN WEAK MEN CREATE HARD TIMES HARD TIMES CREATE STRONG MEN STRONG MEN CREATE GOOD TIMES Do we want today’s high school football players to be a generation of strong men or weak men?

  28. Thanks for the props! So here it is: 1. Gilmer was +1 in the turnover battle, and that was the difference in the game. 2. That being said, Gilmer took a knee inside the 10 to end the game. If Bellville kicks the field goal (instead of the interception) who’s to say Gilmer doesn’t win yet another game this year on another game ending field goal? 3. I’m not sure if Henderson is the best Buckeye of all time. I think I might still give that to Stump or Kris Boyd. But this was the best individual season of any Buckeye ever. Routinely got hard yards after first contact. 4. Gilmer Defense. Wow. Best showing of the year. And that side of the ball is pretty young for Gilmer. Ditto about Gilmer Dline being a beast next season. 5. This was supposed to be a showdown between the speed of Gilmer and the strength of Belleville. But Gilmer was the more physical team almost all night long. 6. 99 was a great player, but not a game wrecker. He made some plays, but Gilmer did a good job of running away from him or allowing him to overrun the play and take himself out of the action. He didn’t have near the impact on the game as Mack did in that 2014 game. This was just a great season and a great group of kids for Gilmer. The team and the entire community came together. I could do a whole different post on Gilmer, state championships, and tragedy. Football season is over, but loving and supporting these kids will continue. Hopefully this helped some small way in the healing process.

  29. I am by no means a Gilmer fan, about as far from it as you can get. But I have been pulling for them this season because nearly everyone in East Texas was throwing them under the bus in September, including most of their own Smoaky fans. "Worst defense we've had since the 90's" I remember reading on here... and "we'll make the playoffs and probably get knocked out in the 2nd round". It was nice to see the Gilmer staff and players prove all the haters wrong by knocking off #1 in the quarterfinals and then for the ultimate irony.... they held the #1 scoring offense in the state to 32 points below their season scoring average in the title game. Helluva coaching job by Metzel and #1 is a bad, bad dude.

  30. Powerlifting is by far the dumbest sport of all time (even dumber than basketball). Here is powerlifting in nutshell: Step 1: buy expensive wraps and bench shirts Step 2: practice putting on those wraps and bench shirts Step 3: practice lifting weights Step 4: burn expensive diesel to drive to another school Step 5: have your school give another school a check so your kids can lift someone else's weights Step 6: have your coach turn his hat backwards and try yell "UP!" louder than any other coach (bonus points if it startles small children) Step 7: hire judges that know super obscure rules that are different for boys and girls Step 8: feed the kids that have starved themselves in order to "make weight" Step 9: get on the bus and drive back to the locker room that is located right next to a perfectly good weight room

  32. 2019 Daingerfield went up 21-0 in the 1st quarter on Gunter. I thought wow this might be tough season. Gunter scored 22 the rerst of the way and won. But then lost to Pottsboro by 2 scores. Gunter did pulled it together and won state that year. Gunter and Daingerfield played two other games in pre-distric for one and playoffs for the other one. I beleave Gunter won by about 3-4 scores on one and 2 scores on the other. No bullying in there. DF had great atheletes and were one of the best teams we played all 3 times. If it comes down to Gunter vs DF trust me we have huge respect for DF. There is this matter of Gunter vs Canadian that happens first though. These are usually awesome games and I get butterflies just thinking about it. I hope we get to AT&T -DF or Tidehaven we'll take it. Canadian is a huge obstacle.

  35. So, I have thought about this for a bit and want to tell Lobo fans why I’m for Longview going with a new HC. For many years, Carthage had a pretty dang successful HC who held the record for wins, playoff wins, etc He took us to a state championship game in 1991 with a team that had massive amounts of talent on both sides of the ball. Our offense was eerily similar to what Longview runs today. Pretty vanilla, strong, strong running game and very solid defense. We won a good bit, and were for the most part consistently good we just never could win state. King has won state once and much like our previous “legendary” HC always wasted tons of talent. Sleepy plateaued and King has plateaued. I understand appreciating what you have and being afraid your program will take a step back. However, if we’d been stuck with our previous coach we never would’ve won 9 titles, to this point. We floundered for a few years and had bad seasons, but we found the right guy and have been celebrating ever since. The same thing can happen for Longview. King has built a very good program, but can’t consistently lead Longview to its full potential. King did do that one time, but his own deficiencies are what is keeping Longview from greatness. It stinks the man leading your program is the same person keeping you from reaching your ultimate goal, and everyone knows it. It’s definitely a risk, but King has wasted so many players and years. I just hate seeing Longview rarely live up to its potential when the sky is the limit for the Lobos.

  37. Thanks for that comment and to those who say Beckville needs a coaching change let’s look at how good and well behaved Beckville athletes are. Wherever they go they are complemented on how well mannered they are . It’s not all about winning and losing it’s about what kind of adults they grow up to be and that says a lot for the staff of the Beckville athletic department

  38. This game could literally be Dfield by 40, close or Hooks by 40. Sounds crazy. Daingerfield - more athletic than almost any team in 3A year in and year out. Should have won it all multiple times the past 5-6 years. They play hard but can be beat by a team that goes right at them. If they were more disciplined, I think they would have twice the state championships that they have. And, that’s saying a lot since they have 6. Poor reflection on coaching … yes. Sorry guys, just telling it like it is. Now Hooks has some years where they’re really athletic. This is one of those years. They don’t out athlete Daingerfield, but definitely cancel out a lot of it. So, imo this isn’t one of those games where Dfield simply wins because they’re more talented. Problem with Hooks is, and this is what I can’t figure out, why do they constantly have early playoff exits? All they trash talk and hype probably gives Dfield the slight advantage because they’re used to it. Literally, flip a coin to who wins. I think Dfield is who dictates it. If they play sloppy and undisciplined, they’ll get beat and could get embarrassed. If they play clean and don’t act foolish all night and don’t have multiple turnovers, huge penalties etc. it could be tough for Hooks. Hooks just can’t let Dfield get in their heads, which they may already be. Coaching advantage - Hooks Athletic advantage - Dfield Playoff/tradition - Dfield Special teams - Hooks Discipline - Hooks Offense - Hooks Defense - Dfield Can’t even pick a winner. Just comes down to which Daingerfield team shows up!

I'ma say it like this, Carlisle Will either play like they are done,or they will push LL out of the playoffs.Their is no middle ground for the indians, they play all or nothing and even then sometimes we ain't sure. This has been the strangest season in years, you think they have finally turned The corner and then splat, faceplant into a Wall, then you think okay we getting ready for basketball and no,they decided they ain't done and boom, they look like contender's . I won't make this game because I've had a pacemaker put in Tuesday and can't get stitches wet for five days,or I would be in attendance for sure, but I'm really hoping Crockett has that YouTube up and running.Lord I pray that the young Men from both squads leave this game healthy and have learned lessons for life, that they become good citizens, father's,and leaders in their communities.I ask these things in Jesus name,Amen

There may not be enough to convict briles in a court of law, but there were some serious issues. Should he have been fired? I don’t know. But SOMETHING needed to be done. It was a problem.
