  1. Oof. Just don't love that. Wish the competition level was a bit higher. I fully expect Celina to win this game. I HOPE to see them execute close to flawlessly on offense and defense. Want to see us focused and want to see mistakes (especially penalties) close to zero in this game. By now we know our personnel, know what we can do. Need to start the refinement process now, especially ahead of the Anna matchup next week.
  2. Paris still has some great athletes. But not a ton of depth. Buckeyes ought to pull away by more than 14 when all is said and done.
  3. That's a bridge a bit too far for me at this point. I'm not saying you're wrong, but that seems like a drastic, dramatic stance after two games. Girls athletics aside, Argyle finished runner up in baseball last season in a nail-biter title game. On the gridiron, the Eagles lost by 8 to eventual state champion SOC in the semifinals in 2022. So, being a state title contender at the 5A level is now not a foreign thing to the Eagles. I think what moving up does to them -- and perhaps this is the point you were trying to make -- is it magnifies those "rebuilding" years. Wherein at the 4A level, maybe those rebuilding years were more "reloading" years, because the state-wide competition level wasn't quite as high. So maybe Argyle won't live in the top 10 each and every year like they did at the 4A (and old 3A) levels since 2010. But based on past program success, I'd say Argyle still has more "top tier" seasons than not across the next 5-7 years.
  4. Short jaunt down Preston Rd for the Wildcats to Bobcat Stadium. Wildcats opened the season with a big win (first in program history) over 4A reigning state champ Malvern (Arkansas). But WG got throttled by Gunter last week. Wildcats have given up truckloads of points in both their games, and that does not bode well for Friday's matchup. Bobcats offense, though young in the skill spots, has leaned on an absolute dominant offensive line to run through Paris and Bishop Lynch. Celina put up 720 yards and 11 total TDs on offense last week against the Friars. 600 yards rushing, 120 passing. And as crazy as it sounds, it could have and should have been worse. Celina beat themselves senseless in the first half with drive killing penalties and three muffed punts. I'll be looking for the Bobcats to clean up those mistakes this week and put together a full, focused game against the Wildcats. I really want to see them honed in on this one and not looking ahead to next week's big clash against Anna. If Celina builds on what they've done through week 2 and cleans up those senseless mistakes, they'll tack on another big W and go into next week's game at 3-0.
  5. They did. It was a glaring, glaring difference in the game. Paris's defensive line is pretty quick, but they're small. Celina's o-line is massive AND athletic. They've bullied everybody through two weeks. I don't know how big Gilmer is in the trenches, but if they've got some beef, they need to lean on it and take advantage of that this week.
  6. Biggest surprise for me through two weeks has been Argyle's hard fall from the top tier. Granted, the Eagles have played some really really good teams so far, but neither of those games has been remotely close or competitive. Maybe it's an actual (albeit rare) rebuilding year for Argyle, who typically just reloads. But the Eagles are going to need to take some BIG leaps to be competitive this season. And that in and of itself is pretty surprising, because Argyle has been so steady and consistent since about 2010.
  7. Paris has some good athletes. They have good speed on the outside. They have a refreshed scheme that suits their athletes better. But they just don't have the horses to run with Gilmer. Celina gave up a score to Paris on the first drive of the game, and then the Wildcats couldn't really do anything after that. Meanwhile, the Bobcats just kinda bullied Paris around, offensively. We were able to throw the ball and use a bruising run game to work up and down the field. If Gilmer comes in focused, after starting 0-2, they'll win this easily. But if there's any hangover from those first two losses, Paris will find a way to keep this interesting for the first couple quarters. Eventually, though, Gilmer's athleticism across the board will take over, and the Buckeyes will win comfortably when the clock reads zeros. I still contend that Paris will make the playoffs this year, though, and the Wildcats will be a tough out come week 4 or 5, when they get in a good rhythm with that new offense.
  8. All that to say, there’s still a ton to be excited about with this Celina team. Defense needs to make some big adjustments and have some younger guys decide they’re gonna step up. But the offense is further along than I thought it’d be and has a much higher ceiling than I expected. Got Prosper Walnut Grove on Friday, and then what is likely the only true-contender test the following week against Anna. Mark the calendars for that one.
  9. 600 yards rushing, 120 and 2 TDs passing. Had a 97-yard TD run called back and several other big gains overturned by stupid penalties. This is as balanced and as skilled of a Celina offense as we’ve had since 2015. Not as deep at the receiver position as that year, but we’ve got some guys who can make plays. Porter at QB is the epitome of a leader. Gutierrez and Williams at RB are the duo we’ve been looking for for a while. From a talent standpoint, the offensive line is up there. But my LORD they are sloppy right now. And I don’t mean technique. They have GOT to clean up the senseless holding calls and extracurricular hands after the whistle. The best player of the bunch got yanked from the game for personal foul penalties, and he also had one last week. Coach Elliot finally had enough. If that player can keep his head on straight, he’s an all-state caliber OL, and the offense will have a chance to peak with him. If he continues the way he’s gone, he’s gonna become a toxic drive killer. Defensively, we gave up too many easy plays early. And then we started to stop Bishop Lynch only to muff two punts inside the 10, and another one deep in our territory. Another turnover later gave the Friars even more momentum. I’d say they scored 21 legitimate points and the rest were throwaway gimmes. We held them to just 6 points in the second half, and it didn’t even feel that close over the last 24 minutes. Like I said earlier though, Lynch has some dudes. Three of them, actually. PJ Washington at receiver/returner, a legit QB and a fantastic RB. And that’s it. Those three are the only reason it was as close as it was.
  10. Now, I'm second guessing. I was checking scores on DCTF's website, and they showed a 42-21 FINAL. Everywhere else I look shows the game is tonight. My apologies.
  11. I was under the impression they played last night.
  12. Well, they didn't lose by 24. But 21 is about what I would have realistically expected as an impartial observer. Melissa is a monster this year. CS is still talented enough to play into December.
  13. I get what you're saying, and I probably wouldn't put CS in the top five of most impressive wins. But their win was a good win. Those teams are rivals, and Lorena is a really good 3A Div. I squad.
  14. And also, Gilmer starting 0-2 won’t mean squat, because IF that happens, both losses will have come to top-tier Div. I teams that will play post-Thanksgiving. Buckeyes will be fine, regardless of the outcome, and I expect Gilmer to go three or four rounds deep too, depending on what round they line up with Carthage.
  15. Here’s the thing, though, there’s no more Fluellen. Buckeyes, as of yet, don’t have that premier athlete that can turn the tide on his own, even against a superior opponent. The cupboard isn’t bare, by any stretch, but player-for-player (at least from what I saw week 1), Kilgore is a notch above, especially in the trenches.
  16. Shoot, man, he’s got some dudes on the outside that don’t need to go deep to beat you. Get ‘em the ball quick and in space and make it a foot race.
  17. After week one, I think they are.
  18. I don't know the last time Gilmer started a season out 0-2, but I think it happens in 2023. I think Kilgore is feeling equal parts confident and upset after that Carthage game. Gotta think the Bulldogs feel like they let a winnable game -- albeit very hard-fought and hard-hitting -- get away. It's that frustration, paired with the confidence they gained from last week, that propels them past the Buckeyes this week.
  19. Bishop Lynch does have some athletes. I don't want to undersell them too hard. They moved the ball in chunks against LD Bell last week. But most of their drives stalled out, and they just couldn't finish. The Friars QB can throw it pretty well, and he's got some decent targets to choose from. That said, Celina's defense is better than LD Bell's defense, and Celina's offense (specifically the o-line) is better than Bell's. All that to say, Lynch has enough talent to trip up the Bobcats if they try to overlook the Friars. A focused Bobcats group wins comfortably, though.
  20. If they come out focus and clean up some of the silly mistakes and sloppiness displayed in the Paris game, then Celina can name their score. If they don't take a step forward from Week 1 to this, Bobcats by 2-3 scores. This is a spot where I wish we'd scheduled someone a bit more on the contender side. I know we'll get our toughest test of the regular season in a couple weeks against Anna, but it'd be nice to have at least a pair of those type games before the district slate starts.
  21. Impressive. They did put up 54 points on WG, so not sure what kind of defense the Wildcats have. WG must not be first-year push-overs, though. Definitely pulling from a huge pool of kids there in Prosper.
  22. Amazing memories all the way around! And to be fair, that is probably the greatest Celina Bobcats team of all time. You could tell me 2000 or 2007 were better, and I'd only argue a little bit.
  23. That Malvern team is still ranked No. 1 in 4A in Arkansas, too. So pollsters in the Natural state still high on the Leopards even after that loss. Don't know what that means in terms of how good WG is, but just an interesting anecdote.
  24. That was 2005, and AFTER that beat down, Argyle made it all the way to the state championship game, losing a thriller to Newton, after mounting a fantastic second-half comeback, shutting out Newton in the final 24 minutes. That was a big program-building season for the Eagles.
