  1. Oof. That one haunts. That dang missed extra point.
  2. 100%. Dallas Carter and Wilmer Hutchins will be improved this year, but they're not on the state level. Bobcats can almost cruise for 5-6 straight weeks, which is unfortunate. We'll get a great pre-district test against Anna in week three. The Coyotes will be a legit contender again. Apart from that, Paris should put up a decent fight in the season opener. They bring back a ton and always have good speed/athleticism. Not sure about Bishop Lynch or Prosper Walnut Grove. But hopefully the Bobcats will get a good chance of breaking in the youth AND getting some good tests before they count.
  3. Today, before the season has officially kicked off, I’d say no. They can’t beat CH or Kilgore. But if Celina gets a chance at either of those teams, it’d be at Jerry World, which would mean they fought out of a gauntlet in Region II. If that happens, then yeah, I’d say they had a shot at either of those teams.
  4. And to your other point, expectations will always be high for Celina. There will always be title aspirations. But it’s been a lonnnnnnnnnng time since Bobcats have gone to the dance, and even longer since we were hoisting hardware at Christmas. An absolute beast of a Region II makes it that much more difficult. But, you gotta beat the best to be the best.
  5. Celina will always have good numbers. There is talent to be had, no doubt, but Bobcats will be young. JV squads past few years have been very good, and that youth will get its shot this year. Knox Porter will replace Noah Bentley at QB. Porter was All-District last season as a backup, filling in for an injured Bentley during district. Looked good doing it. Receiving corp has a chance to be the best it’s been in a long time, but they’ll be young. Offensive line brings back almost everyone and should be a strong spot for Celina. Stable of RBs will be very young, but good good experience last season. Nathan Elliot (C/O 2015) takes over as Offensive Coordinator for Celina, coaching under his dad. Should provide a decent jolt of creativity, but there’s always a learning curve there. Defensively, the secondary will be very good. Lots of experience returning. Defensive line will be where Celina will have to find some DUDES to replace what they had. LB corp will also be young but they have a lot of potential to be a memorable group as well.
  6. Good show guys! Looking like a great season ahead in 4A. Div. I Region II is gonna be a bloodbath again. Lots of good teams, lots of fantastic matchups in the playoffs. Div. II would be really tasty if not for Carthage lol. I am curious to watch Surratt develop at QB. If he turns out to be what he has potential to be, I honestly think the Dawgs could threaten if not break Celina’s all-time win streak.
  7. Definitely an exciting time to be a player and a fan. It was a crazy run of success. To my knowledge, Celina is still the only team to make four straight title game appearances multiple times (1998-2001, 2005-2008).
  8. This is a great topic! Not sure how I could pick my favorite Celina team, there’s been so many great ones. 1995 was special, because those guys set the stage for The Streak, which would begin three years later. I was a kid then and at recess, we were all pretending to be Gary Don Moore (RIP) or Jarrod Martin. Those two dudes literally set the mold for future Celina greats. 1998 started The Streak and got the first of 4 straight titles. 1999 was dominant. 2000 was hilariously dominant and took down Quan Cosby and Mart in one of the most hyped and most exciting title games I’ve ever seen. 2001 was an amazing team that actually broke the win streak record and got a 4th title in a row, knocking off an amazing Garrison team in a game that honestly probably topped the 2000 title game. All-everything RB Adam Harvey was an absolute monster all season long. 2002 was Celina’s first foray into 3A. We were two kids over the cutoff line, and those two kids are all that kept the Bobcats from five, possibly six, state titles in a row and a wild win streak that would’ve pushed triple digits. Even as massive underdogs, after losing GA Moore to rival Pilot Point, we rolled through a STACKED district that included a monster Gainesville team and a solid Pottsboro group. Got to Area round of playoffs and a missed XP against Daingerfield ended the streak and shot down the hopes of a 5th title. 2005 was perhaps the most dominant Celina team of all time. Coming off a 2004 Region II finals loss to Crawford, the Bobcats went on a revenge tour. Outscored opponents 803-75 on the year, and only three teams scored double digits, and only one team scored 20 points. Beat Pewitt in a slobberknocker title game in Mesquite. 2007 was another season of wrath. Bobcats lost to Liberty Hill on a last-second FG in the 2006 title game. Bobcats laid waste to everyone and then had some iconic plays/runs in the state title win over China Spring. Another absolute thriller of a game! I could go on and on about the 2004, 2006, 08, 2015 teams too. So many good ones over the years. Hard to pick a favorite.
  9. There was decent hype that we would see Gunter deep in the playoffs that year. And I remember going with my dad to watch them play Italy in the Region semis — a team we’d struggled against in 96, 97 and 98 (though we finally beat them en route to a title in 98). I remember thinking how similar Gunter looked to Celina and thinking it was gonna be a battle. My dad never had any doubts. He told me it wouldn’t be very close. The game was definitely what you’d want from small-town playoff football between two schools separated only by a few miles. Lots of hype. Lots of energy. Gunter was really good. But Celina was in the throes of a run of greatness.
  10. Gunter had a great team that season. Fantastic RB in Eric Pasina (sp?). He got knocked out early by a nasty Celina defense. Celina was just a cut above everybody in those days.
  11. They weren’t listed, but Celina’s 2005 team averaged 50 points per game en route to a state title. Scored under 30 only twice (once against Pewitt in the title game), and scored under 40 only four times. The defense was even more impressive, giving up only 4.7 PPG. Only two teams scored multiple times in a game against the Bobcats that season, with Pewitt again being one of them in the championship. Easily 1a or 1b of greatest Celina teams of all time.
  12. Celina’s toughest matchup will likely be at home against Anna in Sept 15. Coyotes bested the Bobcats twice last season - that doesn’t happen often. But should be a great test. Bobcats play the new Prosper ISD HS (Walnut Grove) the week before. Not sure what to expect from the Wildcats, but they’ll definitely have the size/numbers to compete.
  13. I’ve heard Celina has had some crazy enrollment numbers through the spring/summer. Bobcats are likely knocking on the door of 5A Div II. I imagine this is Celina’s last cycle in 4A actually.
  14. Great conversation starter! Celina has had lots of championship teams, and a handful that certainly had all the talent to win it all. Not sure this is a ranking, but here’s some great Bobcat teams that fell short: 2002 - lost THE STREAK in the area round to Daingerfield. We made an incredible comeback with a few seconds left and missed the extra point that would’ve sent the game to OT. We had all the momentum and had finally sorted out the Tigers’ attack. Bobcats would’ve matched up well the rest of the way out too. 2004 - lost Region II finals to eventual state champion Crawford. Just a bad game plan that was doomed from the start, going up against what is probably still the best Pirates group. If that game was played again, outcome would be much closer. The two rematched in 2005 and Crawford suffered the wrath of Celina’s title hopes deferred. 2006 - lost state title to LH on last second FG. Such a great game. If it was played 10 times, Celina probably wins going away nine of them. Panthers got it done in the only one that mattered though. 2008 - lost state title in a shootout with Dwight Smith. ‘‘Twas the start of the Carthage dynasty we all know now. Bobcats were a notch down from the state title team of 2007, but still loaded with talent. IMO, Carthage was the only team in 3A Div II that could’ve beaten the Bobcats that season. 2011 - loaded team that fell so short of expectations. Had the talent to win it all. 2015 - A highly underrated Celina team that lost in the state game to WOS. All-state QB broke his arm on opening drive, and that was that. If Pingleton stayed healthy, Bobcats win.
  15. No, that’s not what I said last year lol. I meant Garrison could have and probably WOULD have beaten every other team in 2A. Just ran into an historic team on an historic streak, and luck was a bit on the Bobcats side.
  16. looks like a good run sheet. Can’t wait, as always, fellas!
  17. I'm not sure what else you guys could add. I feel like it's such a great product, especially considering you guys feature EVERY SINGLE TEAM in the state to some degree. The rankings, the Divisional Cover Boys and feature stories, the year in review, the district breakdowns. That's a ton of work and I'm glad you guys put in the effort. Such a fun start to the summer, getting the magazine, even up here in Kansas City. Having lived in several other states, I can assure you all, there is NOTHING in any other state, in terms of high school football coverage, that deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as DCTF. Nothing.
  18. Death, taxes and Gunter vs Canadian. Both teams look really, really good. But my gosh, Gunter has some depth. And this year feels like a revenge tour after coming up just short in 2021. Think the Tigers take this one yet again.
  19. Nice win, Anna. It was a good, hard fought game. Bobcats just had too many key pieces out and made too many mistakes/stupid penalties. Anna has a really, really good team. Hope they’re able to at least challenge China Spring next week. Good season, Bobcats! Proud of those seniors. Lots of those guys been playing for 3-4 years. Hope this fuels the off-season for our younger guys.
  20. Hadn’t heard that, but hate it for the kid if he is hurt. Everybody’s a little banged up this time of year. Depth gets tested in these types of matchups.
  21. Lol no skin off my back if you pick Anna, regal. If I weren’t a Celina fan, I’d have probably picked them too. But I do hope you’re wrong about that pick!
  22. Anna has improved a lot since that first matchup with the Bobcats. That was the first time the Coyotes had beaten Celina in 50 years. Bobcats will be hungry to avenge that loss.
  23. Bobcats are beat to hell right now, unfortunately. Lost our stud receiver for the year. Have been down our best RB for a while. And were without two of our better o-linemen tonight against Kennedale. Celina was able to pull out a very, very gutsy win. Showed a lot of moxie and fight when things were not going well. This team needed to see that in themselves. Kennedale had some freaking dudes on their team, and oddly enough, that slot-t/wing-t is a mismatch for Celina this year. Bobcats match up better with spread teams this year, honestly.
  24. Most people have no idea or appreciation for how hard that is to accomplish. To have AND sustain that level of success over that amount of time is just amazing. It does not take much for a program to take a down turn and dip into obscurity. But it takes so much buy in from the community, parents, admin, coaches, staff, players and other students to reach and sustain that level. Everybody wants state championships, and rightfully so, but those are extremely hard to get. Only one team per division per year gets that. But you can just about guarantee Gilmer is in the conversation of the 3-4 teams that have a realistic shot year in and year out. As a fan, that's a blast, and that's all you can ask for!
