I thought our defensive line had more game defining plays than Bellville or #99. 2pt conversion stop, blocked field goal, 3rd down stops. Heck the 4th down stop right before their last score. Although the questionable penalty turned that one over.

But let the analysts tell it #99 ate our offenses lunch. I don’t know much though, I’m no analyst hahaha.

That 2 point conversion was stopped by Gilmer’s front four consisting of 3 Sophomores and a Freshman! 👀

Congrats Gilmer on your 4th state title in football.  How ironic is it that the defense was the weak link early in the year, and it’s the defense that won the close games when it counted down the stretch in the playoffs.

True. Gilmer’s defense is young too! That DL will be killer next year!

I'm sorry to say this......but IMHO the Gilmer PLAYERS won this game DESPITE the Gilmer coaching staff.....they are as dumb as rocks.  There.....I said it.  My brother concurs.

This is the Gilmer’s HC’s 8th state championship game. His 4th title. Same for several other coaches on his staff. I think he knows what he’s doing.

I mean 5 have been dropping balls don’t act like it’s a surprise. Also maybe these big games were to much pressure for them cause they dropped several the week before.

5 was no stranger to big games. If I recall correctly, he blistered Gilmer last year in Rd 3. In this game,  Surratt pretty much put the ball where it needed to be, and the receivers simply dropped the ball. Uncharacteristic of a team of that caliber.

Never go off past games. I can assure you Glen Rose has improved just like Gilmer. I think this game will be a high scoring game. I have no idea who wins but I am pulling for Gilmer.
Stay focused, no turnovers and play them like you did my Dawgs.

I agree with this. Just like Gilmer, Glen Rose deserves to be in this game. They don’t run a lot, but they can sling it! Buckeye secondary will have their hands full for sure. Look for Gilmer’s RB Henderson to have a huge game offensively.

What are we basing strength of schedule on? Are you well versed or just spouting off from ignorance and prejudice?

I am not trying to pick a fight, you could be right. I just want to know what you based this on.

Well versed. I was going off Maxpreps strength of schedule for both teams. Gilmer has definitely played the tougher schedule out of both teams. Take Maxpreps for what it’s worth, using computers for certain HS sports sometimes backfires. I do know Glen Rose has been playing great the last few weeks, and their passing game will definitely present a challenge. Gilmer’s secondary will definitely need to step it up this week. With that being said, I think Gilmer’s speed in the open field will be the difference and they pull away late.

That 2006 LE team had a kid named Will Middlebrooks and a kid named LaMichael James…. I still get nightmares.

As far as the Gilmer defense, #54 Hagler is a Sophomore and #43 King is a Freshman.  I think part of the defensive improvement was watching those two grow up through the season. Gilmer’s defense is predicated on the linemen keeping the linebackers free to run to the football. Hagler and King just got better and better every game.

Agree. Carthage was young this year, but Gilmer was pretty young as well, especially on both DL and OL.

  8. The Gilmer Buckeyes and Glen Rose Tigers play for a trip to the state final. Gilmer coming off a huge win against Carthage. Glen Rose upset West Plains. The Buckeyes are much more balanced offensively, Glen Rose is pretty much a passing team. Gilmer is more explosive and much faster, and has played a much stronger schedule. Gilmer defensively will need to limit the Tiger passing attack and put pressure on the quarterback. What say ye?

Literally all the time. I see Gilmer hate comments on every Carthage post I have ever seen. Some are really bad, language that would make a sailor blush.

And you do not live rent free in anyone's mind, that is the image you have created for yourselves. Legends in your own mind.

Like I said earlier I am good friends with fanbases all over East Texas and the DFW, common comments I hear are how dirty Gilmer plays. Not good smash mouth football but flat out dirty and uncalled for stuff.  Last year, one kid was having some family issues at home. His mom said when the team played Gilmer in the playoffs, ALL the Gilmer players on the field where talking crap to him about it on the field, even a Gilmer coach had a snide remark for the poor kid when he ran out of bounds on their side. No need for that. I am all far smash mouth football but there are things that cross a line.

“I hear”. “His mom said”. I highly doubt any of this happened. Believe what you want, that’s on you. Jeff built a system when he was here and they still use that same system today. Surratt has built a system in Carthage, and I’m certain they will use it after he leaves. Regarding this game, Sunnyvale played lights out. Had a great game plan. Gilmer played flat, had 3 turnovers and almost got beat. Moving on.

Give me Sunnyvale in an upset! Gilmer, you're way too cocky and arrogant, and you're taking this team way too lightly! You're already looking ahead to the third and fourth rounds, and you've already claimed a victory over a team you haven't even played yet! I hope Sunnyvale beats ya'll this week! Good Lord, show some class!

Nobody is overlooking anyone, but facts are facts. Gilmer has way to much speed at the skill positions for Sunnyvale to contend with. If the OL plays like it did against Center, this game will get out of hand quickly. However; if Gilmer comes out flat and has penalties, Sunnyvale could obviously stay in the game longer. I personally don’t see that happening, but you never know.

  11. Sunnyvale is decent, but this game should be over by halftime or latest third quarter. Sunnyvale hasn’t played that difficult of a schedule and nothing against them, won’t match up very well. Gilmer has way too much speed, so if the OL plays like it did against Center, lights out for Sunnyvale. Buckeyes win big!

LE, Pitt, NL and SH would all benefit greatly from dropping to 3A D1 from an athletics standpoint.  That ain’t happening in SH though.  We will be comfortably in the 4A D2 numbers range at next realignment.  We are growing.

Actually , SH is not growing. Numbers are down quite a bit from last year alone according to one school official I’ve talked to. Also, one player at the Jr High level was told by coaches they fully expect to drop down to 3A DIV 1 next year. SH has a LOT of issues going on right now. It’s not the same school educational wise as it used to be. Not enough teachers is the main reason and with all the publicity this year, a lot of parents are pulling their kids out and moving to other districts. Depends on the cutoff, but SH could drop, and that’s where they should be.

  13. I did not see this coming. Not taking anything away from Spring Hill, they deserved the win, but what is going on with L/E?? They have the 4 ⭐️ transfers, athletic  kids all over the place, big lineman, etc.? Are they missing some folks? Anyway, kudos to the Panthers, when they blew the game in regulation, I figured they would rollover, but they kept fighting. I think SH continues to ride this victory and beats North Lamar next week!

    A few quick observations:

    1) PG is really Good.  Big on O line and D line.  The QB isn’t a great QB, but he’s an Oustanding Athlete playing QB.  He throws it well enough to keep teams from loading the box, but he killed Gilmer with his feet.  PG / Carthage should be a really good matchup.

    2) Gilmer defense is just overmatched every game.  The D linemen are Big, but some of them haven’t grown into their size yet.  The corners too often never turn to locate the ball (a Gilmer issue for years).  But the biggest issue is at linebacker.  Gilmer’s linebackers are undersized, and they just don’t have the speed to contain anything on the outside.  It’s just rough.

    3) Gilmer didn’t even attempt to play any of their O linemen on the D line.  May have to rethink that.  May also need to look down to the JV to see if there is help at LB.

    4) Praying Tennison is OK.  I heard possible concussion.  Really appreciated PG players circling up and praying for him and Ovation PG fans gave to him while being taken off the field.  It’s always just terrifying when a player goes down and doesn’t get up.

Things will be tough for Gilmer going forward this year.  It’s hard to be competitive when the only way to win is a track meet.  People keep talking about a 4th round matchup with Carthage or PG again in the playoffs, but I’m not sure a deep playoff run is possible this year.

Totally agree! The defensive line is just so young this year (Sophomores). They’ve had spurts, but just seem overwhelmed and overmatched against the OL they seen so far. The LB are definitely an issue. Like you said, they are undersized and just slow. Surely there are other players that are bigger and at least faster they can insert there? The 4 turnovers didn’t help as well. I heard C Tennison is ok. Was hit on the fumble and was knocked out. He was alert and speaking. I would assume he’ll be in concussion protocol this week, maybe next week as well? Again, Gilmer needs to make some personnel adjustments on D, they are 6 games in and not improving and getting better. I agree, they need to look elsewhere and possibly play some OL on D. I know they don’t like to do that, but they don’t rotate in and out DL players like they used to, so maybe they just don’t have the players? Anyway, congrats to PG, on to L/E.

  15. I think PG should be the favorite. I think both team’s opponents have about the same record, but I think Gilmer has played a tougher schedule. To beat PG, they will have to score and score a lot! This will be the fastest most explosive offense PG has faced this year, but I think PG will also be the best defense Gilmer has faced. Something has got to give. Should be a great game for sure!!

  16. I can honestly go either way on this one. PG  should have the best defense Gilmer has seen this year, and that PG/Paris game has me thinking PG. Gilmer should be healthy going into this game, but I’m not sure their defense will be up to the task. PG doesn’t want to get into a track meet with Gilmer for sure. Game is in Gilmer, so I guess I’ll go with the Buckeyes in a close game. 35-30.

Just to follow up, teams that run the RPO seem to be our achilles heel, and that is the offense we will be facing most.  If a QB can run at all, we have way too much trouble with it defensively.  We have to have players at least in a position to make a play.

I’ve noticed the LBs seem really really slow this year. They are having trouble getting to the edge on those quick quarterbacks and if they do, can’t tackle. Another thing I’ve noticed is the corners don’t turn around and defend the pass.

  18. A few things. Yes, Gilmer’s defense is bad. I thought they turned the corner against Kilgore. They used to rotate players, especially on the D line, but I’m not seeing that anymore. Definitely need to make some changes, what they are doing isn’t working.
Will is fine per his momma. Believe he has a bruise. Thankfully have a bi week to heal. I think everyone, not just PG will have a field day with this present Buckeye defense. Some more than others.
