2016 All-Smoaky.com All-East Texas H.S. Football Team...
SHillBuckeye replied to Smoaky's topic in High School Sports
Smoak, can't argue with the list, very deserving for everyone listed. My question is, regarding Aaron "Poppy" Brown, the Gilmer QB, he has two sets of stats listed. 3,000+ yards and 35 tds, then career: 5,017 yards 48 tds. He's only played one year of varsity, the 5,017 yards 48 tds from this last season should be his ONLY stats. Where did the other numbers come from?? -
Yes. Skip Townsend. Left Copperas Grove and went to Brock where his teams won 6 state championships, left there and went to Argyle
-
Probably right, but you never know.
-
Argyle girls do have two losses this season. Lost by 2 to Trinity, and lost by 19 to a team from Kentucky. They should have a fairly easy path to state again, just hoping an ET team knocks them out at Regionals though!
-
Ok, but I'm nowhere near worried about next year. Just simply stating next year, and probably the next 4 years will be exciting and fun to watch. Tatum girls are having an exceptional year, kudos for them!
-
Absolutely! Argyle is on a different level, they have knocked Gilmer out of Regionals the last two years. They are #1 again for a reason. Next year However......

I agree concerning this year, but next year Gilmer girls will be unbelievable. Not taking anything from this years team, as they are playing great, but with whom they have coming back, an undefeated JV squad, and two incoming freshmen that will. E on Varsity, a trip to Austin will definitely be a possibility. I know they will definitely be the tallest girls team around with four 6 footers. 6'2 senior 6'0 senior 6'1 junior 6'3 Freshman Will have an outstanding incoming Freshman PG to add to an already really good PG who is a Freshman this year, trust me, Lady Buckeyes will be fun to watch, and crazy good!!

I think you are right. Tatum is very solid, and playing really good basketball. I don't think they have played a tougher schedule than Gilmer, but it's close. Tatum's Bri Mitchell is ET MVP so far, she is an absolute nightmare to try and guard. My top 3: 1. Tatum 2. Gilmer 3. Bullard

I hear ya, and I like Coach Pope. However, folks didn't like the way he coached their little angels. Too much screaming and yelling. Whatever. The program would still be in the same shape even if Pope was still here. These younger girls have not been taught how to play, let alone win. I do feel we have really good coaches in place to turn things around, but it will be a long time before we are competitive again.

Pretty much yeah. Even though some do, but most of our athletic girls do not play soccer. They have have never played basketball, just soccer. The current girls varsity has 2 Seniors (1 playing her first year)Follow that with 1 Jr, 3 Soph, and 3 Freshmen. The JV is winless on the season. The fact is, these girls were "coached" by great ladies, but they were not basketball coaches. These girls can barely dribble the ball, let alone score. Most of the girls have quit, because they just can't play, which is fine, the game isn't for everyone. So, yes, the Coahes failed to teach the basic skills at the Jr High level, and so we are having to deal with it at the HS level. The current girls coaches are great, and doing a fantastic job with teaching, but we are really behind in the basic skills area. They work hard and will play to the end, but it will be awhile before we can really compete with most teams.

I think the Jr High program the last several years was missing the coaching needed going into high school. Girls just have had no motivation to try and get better. New coaches at both Jr High and high school this year, but it will take awhile to get back at past levels. Probably won't make the playoffs this year, actually may not make the playoffs for a while. Have some athletes, but are way behind compared to other schools. They play hard and will only improve, but pretty lean times right now that's for sure.
