The current cut off between 4A-5A is 1226ish and will likely go up next cycle. The only way Melissa goes to 5A in 2022 is if they add 200+ students at the high school within next 13 months and I do not see how that's possible. There is a 100% chance Melissa will be 5A in 2024 but I'd say 20-30% it happens in 2022. the wildcard is what impact Covid has on enrollment numbers.

    Good point

    Lol classic take Red!

Teenage boys grow and develop at very odd intervals. This is why those boys you saw tonight are not on varsity. They need to physically grow and develop, while also growing into their abilities. Not to mention this was the first game of a very bizarre year. Really nice sub-varsity wins for Melissa. Wouldn't declare that Celina is on its way out of the HS football scene, though lol.

I only say that because I've never seen a Celina sub varsity team look like that ever. I dont believe Melissa's jv has beaten Celina's since 2016 when Brendon Lewis was a freshman on jv. Im not trying to knock the kids or program, you asked my thoughts lol. Anyways hopefully tonight both teams play well with no injuries.

Lewis was clearly the difference maker a year ago. Celina had plenty of chances in that game. But Lewis seemed to rise up at key moments and make something happen. With him gone, it'll be interesting to see that Melissa offense.

I tell you who impressed me even more than Lewis, though, was that young cornerback. I cannot remember his name to save my life, but I believe he was a sophomore. He was essentially Lewis, just on the defensive side of the ball. He made some BIG plays in BIG moments. He was not afraid to stick his helmet in there either, even against Point.

Your talking about Damon Youngblood, the kid is dynamic he plays safety. He is jacked and for sure the best player on the field. The biggest difference for Melissa this year compared to last year is they wont need to rely on the qb running so much. Brendon was like a 2nd running back playing  qb, Melissa actually has more go to players this year compared to last season.

When is Melissa gonna have that new stadium and high school completed anyway?  Or is it done already now?  Argyle played Celina in its new stadium last season.......just gorgeous.  But we also played Melissa in Melissa last season at the old stadium.......so we will be playing both teams in Argyle this year.

Melissa's 130 yard indoor facility is being built now with the locker rooms and 6200 sq ft weight room. The stadium is coming soon, im not sure on the exact date but its gonna be really nice.

Did Melissa get some move-ins over the summer from other schools???  I know that community is growing at a very fast pace.

There are people moving into Melissa like crazy.  Melissa turned in 971 students on snapshot day and I believe they are close to 1200 students now.

Well, no rain in the forecast for Friday ... just a high temp of 102°!!

Gonna be real hot on that field. Likely going to see lots and lots of cramps. Depth of both teams might get put to the test early.

No joke its gonna be brutal.... I'll be there anyways sweating my backside off.

Should be a really good season opening game for these two teams.

Celina brings back a very good, very speedy defense. They bring in a very big and athletic offensive line which appears to be healthy for the first time in over a year. They've got a talented 6'7 WR who's going to be a matchup nightmare, along with a host of other speedy — albeit smaller — receiving targets. They've got to replace Logan Point at RB, but they've got a good one in Isaiah Martinez, along with a young guy to keep an eye on in Trae Hollins. The Bobcats also have a new QB in senior Reagan Davenport, who will likely be the best passing QB Celina has had in a while.

If the Bobcats stay healthy, this will be their best team since the 2015 state finalist squad. Given that Melissa didn't score 49 against the Bobcats any of the past three years, when they had some absolute studs, I just don't see them reaching that point on Friday while breaking in a new QB themselves. The Cardinals are good, and I think the youth they have is talented. But I'll take the Bobcats by two possessions in this one.

This should be a very entertaining game for all for sure.

    I say higher scoring

    Melissa 49 Celina 35

Id take that also but Melissa's defense looks very good with good size and a ton of speed. Im not sure Celina will be able to score 35 against Melissa's defense this year. Celina hasnt scored more than 17 points against Melissa in the last two years.

Melissa's offense has some big play capability with a ton of weapons. So will see

Didn't see it, but 971 to 323 enrollment is a pretty tough scrimmage opponent.  Another covid effect.   But it's a scrimmage -  the idea is to come out healthy and practice against somebody in the another uniform.   Other than the all-state linebacker who was already out another couple of weeks with a broken thumb apparently Gunter succeeded in that regard.  Good luck in that tough district.

Its worse than that Melissa is right at 1200 kids in hs.You are correct though, both teams came out healthy and got some work in against another team.

It's called an injury to either the qb or the main rb.......someone who is very key and difficult to replace.  Last season it was just a great offense and not so good and very young defense with our main RB out halfway thru the season even before district ended.  Seems like every year something has happened bad for Argyle to disrupt their chances......yet they have done very well regardless.  All this while contending with very loaded top teams.......it's not easy to win every single game all the way to the final.  Argyle's record since 2010(last 10 seasons) is 132-12.......that's 144 games in 10 seasons.  When you play that many games every year.......it's easier to lose the big one.......or the toughest opponent in your way to the final.  They have built a top program from their inception and kept their Head Coach(now AD also) Rodgers.......that helps with the continuity and the winning mindset.

    Totally makes sense.

  11. My observation with Argyle is you get the same team in game 1 through game 10 or however far they can make it in the playoffs. Argyle seems to peak week 1 and never progresses past that. For instance Argyle beats up on La Vega in pre district then La Vega seems to get better and returns the favor in the playoffs. When Celina and Argyle met up in the playoffs in 2018 Celina probably should have won that game, but in district Argyle throttled Celina. I'm not taking anything away from Argyle because they are really good, but its pretty perplexing to me why they seem to not get better.

Argyle at Celina on 9/11 will be a fun one. Usually a really good atmosphere. A chance to see the Bobcats new stadium, too, for those that haven't.

Another one that won't get as much attention but will be a nice cross-class matchup is Paul Pewitt at Celina on 9/18. Should be hard hitting. A nice nostalgic throwback to the 2005 2A state championship game, too.

Melissa at Celina 8/28 should be a great game to go see. Two top 25 teams in each division.

So nothing like the 28-12 classic from a decade and a half ago, huh?

Celina better beat the breaks off PP
