I'm on board with just about everything you say here, Red ... until you get to Celina's run game this year as compared to last year's.

The Bobcats ABSOLUTELY have a better rushing attack this year. Not to mention, the offensive line is better, overall, this year. Point is another year stronger and seasoned, as is Watson. Not to mention the addition of Martinez in the backfield, who will be fun to watch in the coming year, along with senior Luke Addy, a speedster who didn't play last season.

All those things add up to a more potent attack, no question about it.

We can agree to disagree lol, either way it should be a great game.

  2. So let's talk Melissa's losses so far this year. Frisco High a 5a school that's 7-0 and shocking everybody. Melissa lost by 7 points to them and really should have won that game, but shoulda, coulda, woulda right lol.

Trinity Christian Cedar Hill, back to back state champs and loaded with D1 players and are huge everywhere. I feel like TC was the better team that night, but nowhere near 41 points better. This was a game that the wheels kinda fell off early and often. Miscues and penalties that you cant have against a team that loaded.

They beat Paris, but like Frisco High gave up a lot of points. Melissa has struggled the last few years against teams that run the Wing-T, that's nothing new. Although against Paris it wasnt a grinding game it was quick hitters that went for huge yards.

I will agree Melissa's defense is the weak link, but the last few years they have done enough on defense to hold Celina's run game down. I dont think Celina's run game is any better than last years team because I believe Celina's oline was much better last year. I do think Celina's defense is better.

Again I think it will be a shootout until the 4th qt and Melissa pulls it out by 14.

  3. I dont think a lot of people realize, but Melissa got a move in runningback this year Xylon Posey from Denton, he has been tearing it up. So not only do you have Jabray Young to deal with at 5'10 220lbs 4.4 40, then you got Xylon Posey who runs like a kamikaze and makes defenders pay, he is a hard person to bring down. He isnt as big as Young, 5'10 190 at 4.5 40, but he is so hard to tackle.

When you look at strength of schedule, it's practically a wash to me. Melissa's top opponent so far has been Trinity Christian Academy — a private school team that would easily make the postseason in any 4A district — and the Cardinals got throttled, 48-7. The Cardinals also have a "good" loss over an underrated Frisco team, and that's probably a game Melissa feels like they let get away. The signature win, so far, has been that thrilling 54-46 victory over Paris a couple weeks ago.

It's hard to compare that win to Celina's win over Paris, simply because Jackson didn't play against the Bobcats. He would have made a difference, certainly, but I'm not sure he would've made up a 34-point difference. I think the Bobcats still would've won by 2-3 possessions. I think Melissa's defense has been suspect this season, and I look for the Bobcats to utilize the legs of Point and Watson, just like they did against Paris, and test that defensive front of the Cardinals. If they're not up to the task, and if the Bobcats continually win on first down, they'll continue to feed the rock to Point and grind Melissa to death.

If Isaiah Martinez is healthy for Celina, that adds a whole new threat for the offense, as he is a more-than-capable backup RB, as well as a fast receiver option. Mix in senior Luke Addy and the super speedy Grayson Wester, and the Bobcats are not lacking on offensive weapons. We've just got to find a way to buy Watson time and let him get the ball to those targets. Having success running the ball like we did against Paris will certainly help.

    Very well said

  5. This game has turned into a nice rivalry game. I think if Melissa's oline can with stand the pressure, Melissa will pick Celina's defense apart.

In saying that I think Melissa has to make Celina beat them passing. Celina seems to have found a running game, but the passing game is pretty porous.

I think this game will be a shoot out with Melissa winning by 14.

Sorry, Regal, just woke from a long nap, but as usual you've got the basics covered on this matchup.

    So here's my observations:

    • Last year's game was not a true indicator of the two teams' relative strength.  I'm not sure I've ever seen Paris play as perfect a game as that 54-14 mauling.  From the Paris side, it was a thing of beauty.  But I'm betting Celina remembers and will come prepared.  They've basically had 4 bye weeks to focus on this game.
    • Two weeks ago, Paris was riding high with a top 10 ranking and legitimate state championship aspirations.  But Melissa exposed some warts, especially on defense.  I didn't see the Melissa game, but reports say that the tackling was not up to recent Paris standards and the secondary coverage was porous.  Brendan Lewis is all-state worthy, but the Paris D made him an all-American that night.  I did catch the Anna game and saw some more poor tackling that the Paris D doesn't normally display plus the secondary didn't look as sharp as they normally do.  I know there have been some injuries in the secondary plus the linebacking play has fallen off.  A power team like Celina will be a tough test if they don't fix those problem areas.
    • The offense is still potent.  You've got to stop Jackson inside first plus contain damage on the outside edges.  Hohenberger didn't have a good game vs. Anna (just 2 passes, and 1 was awful).  He's got to hit a couple of key completions to keep teams from packing the box.  If he can, and they don't have any key turnovers or drive-stopping penalties, they can still score with anybody.

Not trying to cop out, but I don't know how to evaluate this game.  If the Cats were on a roll, it would be different, but winning at Celina is never easy even in a brand-new stadium.

BTW, the only reason to watch the Argyle-NL game is to see the battle of the bands at halftime.  The rumor is that NL will be dropping down in classification next year, perhaps to 3A-1.  They need some help like that to be competitive again.

NL and Sanger need to drop down in the worst of ways.

  7. Saw them on the Thursday night game against Dunbar. The oline isnt near as big as years past. Both Guards and Center are all really short definitely under 5'9. My point is the last 5 or 6 years Celina had o'linemen that were 6'5 300+ lbs, they dont have anybody near that big anymore. I remember in 2015 Celina's oline looked like a college oline and could mash the defense. I just dont see this oline being anywhere close to the ones in years past. Point would have way more offers if he had some of the good Celina olines because the kid is a dynamic back. He reminds me of Steel Ratliff from Brownwood back in I believe 2008.

I think Celina has a really good defense, it will be interesting to see how they do against teams that can throw the ball around the field.

  8. I think Paris wins this game again. Celina has a very solid defense like most years, but I think Paris speed will hurt Celina. Paris running back #6 is a burner along with 3 or 4 others, Celina just doesn't have that type of speed. Paris will be the fastest and most physical team Celina has played thus far.

Paris defense is really fast and physical and could present an issue for Celina's offensive line. Im not sure where all the big offensive linemen Celina has had all went to, but they are pretty small up front and don't seem to have the ability to mash on the defense like years past.

Celina will need to be able to throw the ball and the qb will need to be able to run a lot this week for them to have a shot I believe.

Exactly.  A Paris win virtually ensures a top 2 district finish and favorable playoff bracket (avoiding a potential 2nd round pairing vs.(presumably) top 10 teams La Vega and Stephenville (2 teams Argyle has already beaten in close games).

In an unrelated note . . . Argyle is at nearby North Lamar Friday in a meeting with potential state championship bearings.  No, not in football, but in halftime shows.  You can bet both schools will be closely scouting marching band routines to gain at edge in the upcoming 4A state championships.

Also, love the district decision to start games at 7 instead of 7:30 (although that could be a hardship on some fans' travel).  Last week's Paris-Anna game was over at 9:05 despite a technical delay that extended halftime maybe 5-10 minutes.

I wouldnt say that virtually ensures them a top 2 finsh in district. Melissa is going to be the x factor watch. Dont be shocked if Melissa doesnt win out in the district. I know thats a bold statement, but Paris seems to have completely woken up Melissa. Lot has changed in the last two weeks in Melissa since the Paris game.

I could ask you the same! I don't have a "dog in the fight". But as an observation, you are pretty confident with the 3 Touchdowns Melissa is going to beat Paris by. So, I am going to be pretty confident and guess Argyle by atleast 3 TD's over Melissa!

I'm really just trying to keep the banter going until Friday.

As for Argyle you could be right, but who cares Paris is this week.

Wow, must have hit a nerve. I never said MP didn't make mistakes, in fact I didn't even bring up that game. But since you want to go there, did MP make mistakes, absolutely. Is MP "terribly slow"? Ummmm, no. Did MP make them look better because of the mistakes, of course. However, that game has NO BEARING on my opinion of the Paris and Melissa game.

Stand by my opinion, Paris by 21

My point is because Paris whipped yall doesnt mean they are gonna beat Melissa. Yall got beat so bad by Paris not because they were so much better, but because yall lack discipline.

Just picking with you guys. Just showing people there are alternative ways you can phrase the "R" word.

As for the player, his style reminds me of a back from Carthage (dwight smith) in 2008 . He's not as fast as Smith but style is very similar.

Now that you say that he reminds me to of Dwight Smith.

They’re going to have to stick with Argyle at #1 in 4A-D1 until they lose.

I commend DCTF for having the guts to rank Argyle ahead of back-to-back defending state champion Carthage now on a 30 game win streak if they genuinely felt Argyle is better this year, and they obviously did and still do.

If CHS winning at Marshall and a kind blowout win at Gilmer doesn’t jump them to #1 then adding a win at home against a one loss defending 4A-D2 state champ in PG and going undefeated in district won’t do it either.

Rankings mean absolutely nothing in high school football, which is part of what’s so great about it.

    Go Dawgs!!!!!!!

Seen both Argyle and Carthage play. Argyle isnt beating Carthage.

Like I said previously the first game was bad with personal fouls. The two games after that have been more disciplined. But those Wildcats will let their hats do the talking Friday I promise you that

Good luck stopping this dude. Nobody has kept him under 150 yards yet. Kid is a beast 5'10 208lbs bench pressed 375 and squat 575 as a sophomore last year. Runs a 4.4 40 and 10.6 100 meters. Has 6 or 7 Dl offers.
