  1. Marshall has a good game manager at Qb but..... When you have a struggling O-line and can't run the ball (in a wing T offense at that), you HAVE to have a playmaker at Qb. The qb position MUST be an asset instead of just someone that can run the offense smoothly. Not like it's an over complicated offense. If you can't open up running lanes, you have to be able to pass the ball CONSISTENTLY. Then maybe it can help open up your running game later on. I think qb1 went like 6 of 23(?) passing and most of the completions were 5 yard routes or less. He has guys open deep and constantly overthrows everybody. Even before the knee injury. Which explains the lack of interceptions. I know he has potential but it doesn't roll over into games for whatever reason. I can see him being the clear choice last season, with what he was asked to do. We had a veteran o-line and 2 stud sr rbs. The other Qbs can't do much worse in the passing game, but they can make plays with their legs and create more time for the wrs to get open. Or take off running themselves. Instead of being forced into a run, inaccurate deep pass or quick underneath route. Nobody is going to think any less of the coaches for making a move or maybe even splitting reps. If your guy is playing better that particular game then so be it, but your job as coaches is to put the TEAM in the best position to be successful. Every other position on the field has been constantly experimented and tinkered with. The Qb position should not be any different. Sometimes splitting reps even brings out their best because of the competition factor.
  2. I think Hallsville is pretty well coached. At least offensively. They are usually just low on overall team talent. Any injury hits them hard. Some years they will have a stud that helps put them in the playoffs.
  3. Marshall will probably be streaming on Facebook live and Easttexastoday.com
  4. I'm not so sure. PTs defense is legit. If their offense was better, they'd be in DC contention. I bet PT faithful would have killed to have this year's defense with their Freeman led offense a few seasons ago.
  5. If Marshall played this inspired the first half, we may have had a game. Losing that first kickoff and being a running team hurt any real chances. I'm interested in why they gave Carthage the ball on the onside kick. We came up with the ball. Marshall's been a 2nd half team the whole year. They got to learn how to come out playing with confidence.
  6. You can tell Carthage is used to home blow-outs. The entire visitor side is over run by actual crickets.
  7. Marshall is so undisciplined tonight. Matching up real well, just out coached and out of sync.
  8. I'm sorry but that was a blatant opi on that long pass.
  9. With all the young'unz getting pt on Varsity and the JV/Freshman teams showing off, Mavs look set for years 3-5 of the Alverez tenure. This may be a down year compared to the next few. May can make a run for top 2 in district again and a home playoff win. That would be a successful season for all that we lost to graduation.
  10. Mavs could hang with Carthage if we are talking skill position only, but Mavs are struggling on both interior lines this season. No returning starters on either, but I do think Alverez is using these non district games to move people around and shore it up. If Marshall wants to have a chance, they will need to put together their first 4 quarter performance of the season. Marshall has proven to be a second half team under Alverez, but against these top teams, we got to do better from start to finish. We all know Surratt will have Carthage coached up from the very beginning. Marshall is very predictable, so we must critique ourselves and find ways to better disguise things. Learn to show run and end up passing and vice versa. Last season, we had a better running game and couldn't run very well against Carthage. This season, we do have a better passing game. So I think we can be more balanced. More Diego and Shaw at wr to provide speed on the outside. Whaley would make a heckuva TE if he is at least an average blocker. Stop the safeties and Lbs from keying on the run. That's the recipe for success this year imo. If we keep this game competitive, I will leave encouraged. Similar to our games vs Longview.
  11. Mavs JV dominated from start to finish. Not sure final but there was a running clock in 2nd half
  12. I think Mavs respond but the score will just depend on turnovers by both teams.
  13. Lions will be better than last season. I think their new coach has them more disciplined and prepared. Marshall desperately needs to get the run game going. Until then, we can't be expected to blow anybody out. A wing T team that can't run shouldn't intimidate anybody. Our Rbs are very underrated because of the lack of running lanes. LJ found his stride late against Tyler. Would like to see him man up again. Gatson is still trying to find his mojo after his off-season leg injury. If Henderson has a big stout front 7, this game can be close. On the flip side, if they have a big physical running game, our d-line is young and small. They excel against the smaller o-lines and rbs. That's where they will need to attack to win. I don't think they can speed this up and try to out finesse us. Our skill guys and lbs are the strength of team. We are very predictable on offense as well. Opposing coaching staffs scream out (run or pass) to their defense as soon as we line up. We need to do a better job of disguising some things.
  14. As bad as some of the games are, not many in 5a/6a East Texas would fare much better. Maybe T-high and Lufkin, but even they would get dominated more often then not in a 4 quarter game. I think Alvarez will have this team clicking at a high level in years 3-5 with all the young talent. Having said that, the year that Longview goes up 2 classifications on us, should be the year the series ends. Marshall just doesn't have the depth anymore to make the series relevant. We only had 35 players on Varsity last season. Not much better this year I think Marshall has no returning starters on the O-line or D-line. They are all underclassmen and return next year. That pretty much spells doom early in the season against bigger schools that are physical up front. Marshall has a solid back 7 on D as well as Qb, skill players on O. Alvarez mentioned before the year that we will suffer growing pains due to the young guys in the trenches. We did turn it on the last few games of the year last season. So hopefully they use these early games to adjust and grow.
  15. Mavs may have some solid sophomores to pull from next season.
  16. Marshall Freshman lead 12-8 at the half. How did Lobo freshman do last week?
  17. Can't go off the scrimmage. JT seemed way better than Legacy on both sides of the ball. Legacy may be a tad better defending the pass, but that's about it.
  18. As The real masterminds, that hired those guys to basically play a role, get off scott free time and time again. Of course I'm referring to the CIA. The most corrupt and wicked, publicly known organization in the world. Who are also responsible for countless other terror attacks and mass killings. The real war has always been against the average American citizen.
  19. Just want the Mavs to continue to show improvement before district. Another physical Defense that will help us work out our kinks in the running game. If we can get the running game clicking, look out. I think our passing game showed promise for being a first game. Definitely won't be a one dimensional rushing offense this season.
  20. Henderson plays back to back Harrison County teams. Will be interested in how Hallsville and Marshall both fair against the same opponent in consecutive weeks. With that district game looming a few weeks later.
  21. I've seen both in person. JT SHOULD win comfortably, but can't really predict much in this game.
  22. Never seen a game of inches this many times.. . GG
  23. I don't like new rule. Maybe for non district
