  1. A current head coach and former Dave Campbell Texas Football coach of the year winner is highly interested. Has ties to the new sup. Has a long history not only improving football, but all sports men and women. Going to get interesting.
  2. I hope who ever gets the job will bring stability and compassion to the job. I want Sabine to WIN in every sport and competition....I want them to be great in UIL events as well as sporting events. It is my school that taught me what I know today. I would love to come home, but I also know the politics involved and it is what it is. Either way I would love for my kids to go there and for the current students to be successful. Right, wrong, or indifferent, get behind the new guy and lets support him and the kids. They deserve it as well as all former and current students.
  3. People must understand that whoever comes in will not fire the whole staff. More than likely he will be able to bring two. The question is what kind of coach are you looking for? I want to see my former school become successful. I have a theory on the kind of coach you should look for. The majority of the people will say lets find someone from an established program. Programs such as Tatum, Gilmer, Carthage, and from my neck of the woods West Orange -Stark would fit that bill. I would look at other factors first. I would try to find a coach that helped rebuild a program from the ground up. You have to find a coach that has come into an 0-10 job and turned it around in a reasonable amount of time. Nothing against and older coach, because I think they bring a lot of wisdom, but I would look for someone who is in it for the long haul. I would also look for someone who does not want to use the job for a stepping stone. I believe Sabine can be a good place. Matter of fact I know it is a good place. There are quite of view good people in the community. As with every community not everyone agrees on everything, but if you put the kids first with your decisions then you should be fine. Regardless who becomes your coach I will always support my town and athletic program.
  4. The most talented team, athletic team does not win all the time. The team that works the hardest and wants it more wins. It is all about putting your kids in the best possible situation. It can happen in Sabine, and someday it will.
  5. Offensive numbers are great and they look real good, but the bottom line is wins and losses. We run a so called boring offense, but it gives my undersized and unathletic defense a chance to compete. Every body wants to go the spread and fling it all all over the place. The problem is when you do not catch it you run about 45 seconds off the clock and then ask your defense to defend more plays. As for the numbers, I have heard that since I was in school. The saying was wait until we are 2a, well we are and things have not improved. I respect Coach Baker and hope he can get it done. I just believe in an offense and defense that gives you best chance to win, period. As far as kids leaving for other schools, that is completly a parent issue. What are you teaching your kids? When things are bad just up and move. I take great pride in Sabine and I would have never left. While I am not a spread guy, I still believe that you should support your coach. Encourage your kids to play, and quit making excuses. Things can change, I have seen it. Like I said before, my current school had not won a playoff game since 1962 and we went three rounds deep.
  6. The place can win it will just take the right circumstances for it to happen. I am from there and know the type of kids that are there or I guess were there. I hope coach baker gets it turned around and pointed in the right direction. I work with a similar group of athletes and we were able to go three rounds deep in 4A. Being the defensive coordinator at this school I have learned a couple of important aspects to coaching football. 1st ... We are never going to out athlete anyone, so we train are kids to be tougher than anyone we play. And we are. We put our kids through things that in my 12 year career I have not seen. This has paid off with two playoff appearances in the last three years. We won a playoff game for the first time since 1962. 2nd...We run offenses and defenses that help give our kids a chance against more athletic teams. On offense we run a slot t which helps us control the clock. We take pride on getting four yards a carry, and this opens up our play action passes. Its not the prettiest offense to watch, but would you rather look good and lose, or play real man football and win. If you want to know what this offense can do, take a look at what liberty hill did to gilmer a few years ago in the state championship game. I run a 3-3 stack on defense and send all kinds of pressure at any given time. WE basically stunt to different fronts. This gives us an advantage because of all the blitz packages that our opponents have to work on. 3rd... We really work hard on special teams..We will always have a couple of onside kicks and fakes in the game plan. 4th.. We always have some trick plays that we will use to give our opponent something else to work on. We really like to use the swinging gate in the middle of the field and run two or three plays off of it. 5th.. We as a staff will prepare our kids. We have daily film sessions in the morning and afternoon. Our coaches do a great job of finding tendencies on film. While I do not require my coaches to work Sundays ( I believe this is family time and they need time to recharge...all though we all take film home) I feel our kids are more prepared than our opponent. So cardinal faithful you always have a chance. You should back your coach and encourage your kids to play. I am a proud alum and can't wait for the day that we get back to playoffs. Good Luck in 2012
  7. I threw my name in the hat. Would love to be a mustang. I have spent my whole career trying to get home and become and athletic director. Really want my kids to go to a small school like I did. I'm from here and would love to come home. We will see....good luck to everyone and what ever happens lets hope Overton gets back to its winning ways.
  8. Bridge City is not lowlyy ranked. the were a play offteam last year with 7 off....and 8 def.........players coming back. They also have the district pre season mvp coming back. Be carfeul what you say
  9. First of all the kid that got hurt was on offense. To say a cut block did that would be crazy. Second, the cut block is perfectly legal. You better teach the technique to defend that block or it will be a long night. ANYBODY that was at that game knows Vidor should not have played with T_HIGH. Vidor did a good job of utilizining what little talent they have.
  10. I was at this game and to say that texas high doesnt have talent is STUPID. Ask any Vidor coach if those kids could play for them? Bottom line is the Texas High Coaches got out coached. Vidor ran an offense that gashed the bigger, faster, and stronger texas high team all night. Vidor's deffense played man coverage and put heat on the Qb all night. Yes texas high scored a few times, but for the most part Vidor did a good job with slower athletes. Bottom line texas high coaches should be emabarassed...Vidor took it to them, with the cut blocks which Texas high had no answer for. Cut block is the great equalizer in football. Good job Coach Mathews and team. Texas High will be fine as long as they do not have to play a slot t team. With that said I hope they keep playing, because it was fun to watch a team win that had no business playing on that field.
