  1. As I said, if my prediction proves not to be so, I will come back and take my lumps. I mean no disrespect to the Lobos, they have definitely earned the right to be the big dog in the house. It is definitely going to be a steep hill to climb, but it doesn't change how I feel. There are somethings that make me more than optimistic about our chances. First, there were some key players missing in that game. Secondly not only were we experimenting with some things Defensively, but the Defense was in search of an identity ("Identity Found"). Can't wait for the game.
  2. Although I don't post regularly (I guess that's why my post are so long), I do read daily. Let the chatter began! Some folk call me a "Homer;" some call me "unrealistic;" and some call me down right "delusional." I am who I am, and I believe what I believe. I was almost laughed to scorn previously when I said that Marshall has the athletes, and talent to compete with anybody in the state on any level ( now I know that North Shore, and Duncanville are different beast at this time). There has been nothing that I have seen recently that has changed my opinion. To concede defeat to anyone, is to have lost before you even play the game. As I look back at our team (Marshall Mavericks) over the last two years, I shutter to think of what could (should) have been accomplished had we realized had we our full potential. Make no mistake about it, "I truly am proud of what the Mavericks accomplished (the standard is high), and "I ride or die" with the Marshall Mavericks. When you have (4) four all state player: (1) one offense (Taj Washington); (3) defense (Brevin Randall, Mike Washington, and Champ Mathis), not to mention all the other talent. When you have (6) six athletes sign DI scholarships on the same high school football team, it is hard not to fill as if much more could have been accomplished (No fault of the kids!). Through it all, I am even more convinced that we won not because of, but despite the coaching. Last year I sat at the Marshall/Longview game with my cousins from Longview and endured the agonizing 60-14 defeat at the hands of the Lobos. I suffered through a night of Heart Break and anguish as they passed the tissue all night long. Asking, "do you need some more?" I said all of that to say this, anybody can jump on the wagon after the wheels start rolling, but I want to be the first to say that a perfect storm is brewing in Marshall (The right coach, the right staff, and the right athlete at the right time). Let me go ahead and step out on a limb and say the unfathomable. The 2019 Marshall Mavericks are going to shock the football world, by upsetting the 2018 6A DII Defending State Champion Longview Lobos, In route to a 2019 5ADII Championship. PS: If this proves not to be so, I will come back and take my lumps.
  3. I am as fanatical as they come when it comes to Marshall Maverick Football, and a ardent supporter of the program. I thought I would take a moment to weigh in on all of the talk about Champ listing DeSoto as his school on signing day rather than Marshall. IMHO, I feel that it is much to do about nothing. I can only wish the best for the young man as he moves forward, and play at the next level, because he played hard for us for two (2) years. He may have put down DeSoto as his school, but his entire display was "Red and White," and all Marshall Maverick! If I were asking the question, I would want to know how did DeSoto feel having all that "Red and White" in the midst of their Green and Gold. Personally, I'm excited about moving forward with our young, talented, and innovative new AD/HFC (Who seemingly want to be in Marshall). I refuse to dwell on the past, because it is hard to move forward looking back. Lets go MAVS!!!
  4. You can't blame people for being skeptical after all that has happened, but if things hold true (that he's staying), he gets 100% support. It's not about a particular coach, but it's about the kids, and the program.
  5. I know that there has been a lot of speculations as it relates to coach Mathis, and his perceived involvement, or roll in the resignation of the DeSoto former Head Football Coach, and the dismissal of the DeSoto ISD superintendent. There has been numerous attacks on Coach Mathis character, and integrity, but all are speculations and assumptions. I am the first to admit that things could have been handled differently, but we all make mistakes. I am man enough to say that I was wrong, and jumped to conclusions, and I want to be the first to say so. I know that this is a forum, but we all need to careful about tarring people down, because there is life after the forum. I have received information from a very reliable sorce, that when DeSoto announces the name of their new head football coach, it will not be coach Mathis, because he chosen to remain in Marshall. He will be the AD/HFC of Marshall going forward.
  6. If he wasn't such a jerk, IMO we would've won more games, and went deeper in the playoffs last year.
  7. Just a thought: Maybe Mathis legitimately came to Marshall with the intentions of staying for the long haul (4-6 years), and building the program that he said; Maybe, Mathis never thought that in a million years the Desoto position would become available anytime (4-6years) in the near future; Maybe, Mathis truly believes Desoto to be home; Maybe, it is not Mathis desire to just be in the DFW area, but Desoto; Maybe, Mathis felt that when the Desoto position became available, that this was his last opportunity to go back to the place he call home, so, he felt that he had to apply. Just a thought, Maybe!
  8. Yes, I live in Sugar Land, but I am in Marshall almost weekly, so I may not be as far removed from the reality of Marshall as you may think. I am well aware of the socio-economic conditions that currently exist in Marshall today. Be that as it may, It does not change what I think about Marshall, and its ability to consistently compete with the elite programs year in, and year out. When Dennis Parker first came to Marshall, there was a defeatist mentality, and inferiority complex that emanated, and persisted throughout the entire community. Everyone was of the mindset that that Marshall could not play with, and surely not beat, the Longview's, Lufkin's, or, the John Tyler's of this world. It took a man that was rooted and grounded in who he was, unyielding in that which he believed, and a willingness not to be uncompromised in order to change that culture. Because he held his position, and stayed the course, there was a time when (3yrs) no team from East Texas beat us. So, I will not apologize for digging in, and believing what I Do. I guess time will tell.
  9. Marshall don't need to attract athletes from anywhere, we just need to keep our home grown talent at home. With the right coach, we win! We win, upgraded facilities will follow. FYI, It's already in the works.
  10. I understand trends as it relates to suburban areas, I live in Sugar Land , one of the fastest growing suburban areas in the country. As far as I'm concerned, I can care less about demographics, or, numbers. Talent is talent, regardless to whether it's in the inner city, or suburbia, and numbers (enrollment) are numbers, regardless to whether it's 1980, 90, or 2018. Call me an unrealistic homer if you will, but I choose to believe that with the right coach, Marshall still has the talent base to compete with anyone, in any classification. Yes, HP did put 59 points on us in the SCG. A high school team (HP) with two current professional athletes that were the highest paid in their respective sport. Matthew Stafford (Detroit Lions) was the quarterback, and Clayton Kershaw (LA Dodgers) was the center on that team. I'm just grateful that they didn't put anymore points on us than they did. I understand that the enrollment is down in Marshall (you say 400) from what it was in years past. That is largely due to students choosing to go to other schools in the surrounding area (Hallsville, Waskom, Tatum, etc.). I know that our numbers don't stack up against suburbia, but I believe that our talent does. Furthermore, I still believe that with the right coach that we can go "Head to Head", and "Toe to Toe" with anyone. I believe that if he build it (program), they will come (home). I guess time will tell whether I'm a unrealistic homer, or maybe I know something the average person doesn't.
  11. I grew up in Marshall in the 60's and 70's, although you may feel that I am a bit removed from reality, I have followed and supported this program every sense. That doesn't change the fact that I truly believe that Marshall can compete with the Aledo's of this world year in and year out.
  12. Thanks for clearing that up (you didn't have to, you chose to). I don't know everything, nor, do I claim to (I am pretty knowledgeable when it comes to Marshall Maverick Football). If you don't know something, you ask. I didn't know, so I asked. Now with you being a Moderator feel the need to be sarcastic, just don't reply. Again, I will agree to disagree with you as it relates to Marshall ability to consistently compete with the larger school (year in and year out). I don't believe that anything I say is going to change your opinion, and I know that you are not going to change mine. Thanks!
  13. Thanks for clearing that up, because I was unclear. I am not being sarcastic when I ask this, but why was there a need to create a Div. II, if it doesn't create another state champion?
  14. I beg to differ, so, I agree to disagree. There was a time when 5A was the states largest Classification, and you had one team from each district, with one eventual state champion. 5A was broken down to (2)two champions. Then, out of the same pool of schools the 6A was created with (2) two more state champions. That made a total of (4) four champions coming out of a pool that was once produced (I) one champion. I may be wrong, if I am correct me. Now, you have 5A Div. II which creates (2) more state champions. That makes a total of (6) six state champions (5A & 6A) coming out of pool that once produced (1) champion. With the right coach, Marshall will do well regardless to what District, Division, or Classification they are in.
  15. I stand corrected, Converse Judson was one of the largest schools in the state of Texas. Now, if my memory serves me correctly, It was Marshall that beat Plano (the largest school in the state) 24-19 in the quarterfinals. In route to the state championship. I understand that it is 2018, but it has been that defeatist mentality, and inferiority complex that hindered this program in recent years. Based upon what I know, I will continue to believe that with the right leadership, Marshall is able to compete with anybody (5A Div. II or 6A). Thank you very much!
