I've talked to several coaches mostly with East Texas ties and even a couple of alums who might be solid candidates...apparently something is scaring them off because the consensus I'm getting is "I looked into it and there were red flags and I decided to pass"

you hit the target here. again, not a single coach/athletic staff on hiring committee and thats a fact. 6 members, not one current athletic staff. there is a reason coaches leaving here at speed of light. they all have one common denominator in conversation. i hope new guy can tame the issue and keep the issue out of his way and do what is required to grow otherwise we will keep losing good people

  2. The best companies/programs in the world promote from within. Mathis was loved by some and hated by others. Marshall promoted within and grew. Greidl and the staff there knew the ins and outs to get the things done they needed too.., now promote within again and let that guy grow it more since he knows ins and outs too.

big name chasing in Marshall is a waste and never worked there. No big name came in and did great…they became big names after marshall or because of marshall. Give it to the guy who already knows and can build on the momentum already there. Greidl never had Ath dir experience and did more than previous 40 years with all sports..can you imagine if they didn’t promote within do to experience then? Promote from within. My 2 cents. Momentum in place. Kids love him already.. why waste time with an outsider?

But why not try? We would never know until we plugged somebody in there to find out. Look what happened with Savion last year and Rawls even had qb experience when Savion didnt. The guy just commited to Okla St so hes a bonifide stud. You have to put the ball in your playmakers hands. Just look at what he did with his ints this year and at wr last year. When your ol is struggling you need somebody that can make plays with their feet and Lord knows Burris was not going to do that. Burris deserved his shot and im glad he got the opportunity he worked hard. But as a coach you have to play who gives you the best chance at winning and Griedl never even tried a plan B. A backfield with Rawls, Dom and DD would have been a nightmare for defenses esp since Rawls is a true dual threat.

Watching it play out this year i think yous wrong on this one. I think this team tried plan a,b,c,d. If yo actually paid attention to games you see that almost every week adjustments made and kids moved around. An easy to say out Rawls kid back there. You ever see Rawls throw a ball? So you go do what they did last year with Savion and get beat in first round again cuz you don’t have a true QB? Rumor mill I heard was he told coaches no way he was playing qb and wasn’t gonna do it. What about having both back up QBs going out with injury after Jacksonville game? Alot of people want to throw slugs at burris... a kid who had more throwin yards than most QBs in Marshalls past and never started a game. A kid who had to hear for a full year how bad he was gonna do from people in this community. As a fan I hate the result but gotta be proud to be a Mav and ain’t gonna get in here and bash the kids or the coaches... ya some changes need to be made but gonna see who stays around. Always a bunch of coaches leave every year in marshall.. and that’s if head coach sticks around to.

Well Nacdragon07 I hate to say it but our coaching staff for some reason insist on doing the same! Logic tells you when your up against a monster offensive line you go with 4 down linemen but It appears Marshall coaches always want to wait till half time to switch to four. This coaching staff this year is operating with a huge question mark over them! I know there’s talk about town on the quality of them and how the kids are buying into this program. It is a for certain the facility is improving but the team is steadily going south! This was a  predominately senior team this year and was predicted to be a force in district. Looks as though we have started a rebuilding year one year early. If we look like this now next year is gonna be very tuff.

last 2 games mavs played a 4 down defense.

In 2017 when this class was 9th grade they won 3 games.

In 2018 only very few where on the 10-3 team as back up roles.

this junior class didnt win a game as freshman.

i think these kids still learning how to win and be consistent at it. they never done it before on there own.

9th grade only won 1 game last year as 8th grade and is undefeated this year in district.

Congratulations on having really good athletes. If any of those teams had half the athletes of Marshall you would see the reality of how underachieving Marshall program really is. Nobody said Whitehouse football was better by more wins (which they were last year).. but simply had a good program.

What we won’t be denying is the many many many people watching Whitehouse’s QB in the Super Bowl Sunday. I wonder if the town of Whitehouse will even support him since they are so racist. Ha!

Gawwwwd i hope marshall stomps yalls @$$ again next year... this is exactly the ignorance of what people are talking about with WH.

  7. if they hire the baseball coach to be the AD then they won't get anyone worth nothing for the football job...not at that place, when football and baseball already dont jive together. Id imagine spring hill, pine tree, marshall, maybe longview clean up from h-ville move ins if thats the case

Discipline and the former coach in the same sentence?

    Surely you jest......

The free passes given out are the very reason we are where we are now.

But I 100% agree that Randle is a beast on the staff... among several others to keep things in line.

i been watching marshall football a long time. one thing i notice is coach g let his coaches coach. coach randle did what he does and got after them boys last night. coach g allowed him to do that cuz he knows thats a strength of coach randle. thats what will make the mavs great is we finally got a guy that lets coaches do what they individually good at and coach g doesnt worry about the image of it all. he goes to a different beat of the drum. when he speaks the kids listen and they know it aint empty words but that he means it and then he lets the rest of the staff play the roles they good at. one thing this staff wont put up with is the trash talking and you can see that in how coaches react now when they see it. last few years these kids did whatever they wanted and it cost them in big moments. i see that chainging

    Upset why?

Because it wasn't an inside hire?
Because they didn't get the guy they wanted?
Because they hired a guy that won'y play Nac Politics?
Because they want to keep Nac in the football dark another 30 years?

Makes absolutely no sense to be upset with this hire.

So you would be ok as a NAC resident hiring someone who not bringing his family in? I know that ain’t true based of the past situation you had in marshall. This was them goin after a name over the right fit. The community sees that

  10. I haven’t heard this type of energy in Marshall in a long time, if ever. A true vision. I personally love it. He also calls it like he sees it.. callin out the people who live in Marshall but “run away from the situation” rather than fixing it it. My favorite quote from it: “It takes grit and fortitude to fix something, but it’s easy to run away”. What does that teach the kids when parents train them to run away from a tough situation. Love his fire. We got the right guy. I’m fired up after hearing that!

For what it’s worth.... the current DC was the OL coach at ETBU when they had the #1 offense in NCAA Div III under Scotty Walden.

So he’s no stranger to coaching offense.  And ETBU has always been a wide open offense.  Usually in the top 10 of D3.

Sul Ross... not ETBU. He worked for Walden when Walden was named the OC as a 23 year old at Sul Ross. (2012). They went 5-5. DC has never been at ETBU.

In the business world.... and in healthcare (my field).... people look at years of experience.

I'm sure that’s part of the equation here too.

That’s one of the things that hurts a young coach.

I seem to recall an OC at Marshall that advanced to the team to the region semis in 2009.  He became HC in 2011 and we cratered to a (3-17) as he experimented being the top dog.   He was an outstanding OC  but cratered as HC

So I understand the trepidation.  We are only 6-7 years removed from that.

Not about years of experience as much as it is what youve achieved in your years of experience.

If it’s the OC’s prerogative to leave if he doesn’t get it.... then so be it.

One person was not the sole reason we’ve been successful.

    This is a group effort.

And a silent or inferred ultimatum will rub most people the wrong way.

Abd none of us know for sure what he’s thinking.  He deserves a fair shake.

And here is something to consider:  young guy from Austin with ties to a successful 6A program.   Sounds like we could be doing this AGAIN in a few years.

Seems to be a trend you see across the state. Metropolitan  guys want to be in metro areas.

Guys from smaller towns may prefer smaller towns.

    Should be interesting.

I don't think it is an ultimatum, nor do i think the success the Mavs have had fell solely on the OC, not even close! What I do think though is you (maybe, based off the post) are delusional to think either coordinator stays if they don't get it. I think there is a chance they both may, because im sure they both recognize the talent coming back, but USUALLY that isn't how this works...usually.

Youve brought up the OCs "BIG" city background..yet he is the only coach who moved his family out here......

I wonder if you could look back in time what people would say about the Lincoln Riley hire, the Scotty Walden hire at ETBU (east texas example), Sean McVay with the Rams, and many more of how many people would say "he is too young, he is a young guy, he isn't old enough" etc. etc.

Ties to other programs doesn't mean return to that program, it means thats how they grew to be successful. The DC has ties to a very successful 4a program in San Antonio area. The current HC there is like 80... the DCs family still lives there, why do you not consider him a "flight risk"?

At the end of the day i like the looks of the OC over the DC, but thats my opinion. BOTH ARE GREAT! I just see football programs in general are hiring the up and comers over the "experienced".  What I can promise you is that regardless of who is hired i will back them 100% and i want that statement to be heard clearly. What I honestly DON'T think would be good is an OUTSIDE HIRE. I think thatd hurt more than it helps.

Here is the question at hand... what looks better?  An OC who leaves to be an OC somewhere else and goes like 5-5 and misses the playoffs or is stuck in OC status for 5 more years or....

OC who gets passed up, passes on other OC jobs to see what he can do with his talent, and goes 3-4 rounds deep?

OC with commitment is the one I choose for the next HC when i go looking... and playoff wins sure as hell won’t hurt the resume

If the OC doesnt get the job he will leave. Thats how this works. Id imagine Mathis would want him at Desoto, and there is alot of talent there for him to not go "5-5". You are assuming he would only get an "average" job if he wasn't in Marshall.

Smoaky said the internal search would go through today. I wonder who else is interviewing other than the DC/OC.

I’m hearing names like Jack Alvarez

    Josh Gibson

I personally want you to hire Scott Ford.

But if not and sounds like you are not. You missed out a running guy last time. Why would you want one now??? Do y’all have a bunch of stud RB coming?

Neither of those guys have an offense foundation that fits the personnel of Marshall. Along with that, you have to think of how kids will respond to those guys. Has Gibson ever coached at a place anything similar to Marshall? There are better names being thrown around than him. But still I think it needs to be one of the coordinators. I thought we would have heard on an inside hire by now. I’m pretty sure they both interviewed early last week. Might mean outside hire is being worked in the back door.
