  1. Young bright mind. If my math is correct, I coached against him when he was at Lake Travis. He was the WR coach and I was the DB coach. I was on high alert that week. Most disciplined receivers we faced all year. They were not the most athletic we had faced but they were the best coached for sure. We were lucky to escape with a W.
  2. DOB, 28 years of coaching and I see no end in sight. This quote is so very true. The kids I have coached are very special to me. I've been blessed to have a handful of rings but when it is all said and done the thing that makes me the proudest is having an ex player tell me about his career or introduce me to his family. They all still call me Coach and it makes me happy.
  3. I don't think he is a metroplex guy at heart. However he does move around a lot. Averages about 2 years per school over his 15 year career. Like I said in a previous post, maybe Athens can be his destination school and he will stay and build something now that he is the HC. He has some good young talent if JV and Freshman records mean anything. I was told that he is bringing his brother with him to be his OC. I'm assuming Sealy will be looking for an OC instead of UNT.
  4. His dad returned to public High School coaching. He spent some time at a private school and last year was the OC at a college.
  5. It will be his 7th or 8th job in his 15 year career. Maybe he will settle in and make Athens his "destination job". He does come from a great football family. His dad and brothers all coach and have had success.
  6. I can vouch that Ponder is a dang good coach and from my experience he is a pretty good man too. I think Center made a nice hire
  7. Interesting. My experience is quite opposite. We have had over 100 D1 kids come through and the vast majority of them were great kids and students. Of course we begin the indoctrination of what it takes to be a college athlete at the 7th grade level with both the athletes and their parents. The focus was always on grades first. Our kids had to work hard or get passed by so work ethic was ingrained early too. Not to say that we don't have knuckleheads and some crazy parents but the door is always open for them to leave and they know it.
  8. I've coached against him several times. Always an adventure.
  9. Nevermind Matt Stepp, I was thinking of the wrong brother.
  10. You are right. I forgot he went south east recently.
  11. As a player Kinda, depending on what you consider east Texas. It is a done deal.
  12. Then I can narrow it down to 2 guys. Probably 1
  13. I'm guessing they have made a hire since they posted positions for OC and DC this morning. Or maybe every candidate made it clear that they intended on bringing their own guys in at those positions. I know one guy that interviewed but do not know if he got the job yet.
  14. Well I had a little inside info. I'm not smart enough to figure that out alone.
