Yes, sadly it was.  Losing a child is unimaginable, but in this manner is even more painful.  The whole community is just in a state of disbelief still.

    Prayers from Canadian. As a parent I can’t imagine….

check in on your friends, check in on your kids, check in on your kids friends, and have their parents check on your kid.

Anyone who says a team that didn't make it to state was better then the teams that did and kids who worked hard to play in the state championship are fools. Rankings should be 1. Malakoff 2. Franklin 3. Brock 4. Edna then so on. I have been quite on here for so long even after losing. But I won't stand by and let people trash my team. It's funny how he didn't talk trash until after the game was over. @blackngoldtiger congrats on you're first state championship you guys deserved it. If anyone was to beat us im glad it was koff its an awesome feeling like never before. Maybe we can get a non district game for next season home and home.

I disagree. There have been numerous times that semi final matches were close and state games were blowouts.

I dont remember the kid's name, but #35 for Canadian was a dangerous option for the QB.  Looked like a dump-off option in the passing game, and it was a successful option early on.  Gunter did a good job taking that away later in the game I think.  Canadian's QB - injuries or not - was very good.  Gunter did have the Canadian QB #4 (is he a Cavalier?) on the run quite a bit which had an impact.  He threw a pretty ball, and frustrated the defense (by defense, I mean me).  Great player, and if he wasn't 100%, I think it played a part.  Perhaps not in the outcome, but man is he good.  I have read where Gunter held him 46 passing yards shy of becoming the 4th player in TX HS football history to reach 4,000+ passing and 1,000+ rushing in a season.  A group that consists of Kyler Murray.  46 yards shy of joining that elite group.  He was short on passing yards.  I think he already had 1,500+ rushing yards coming into the game; he just lacked thr passing yards to join that elite group coming into the game.  Though I do think his 86th pass broke the TX HS football record for TDs in a season.  Great player.  One I was worried about going into the game.

On the flip side, I believe Gunter had 4 or 5 key injuries as well - a lot of those in the secondary.  I only say this to point out that pretty much every team has injuries by game #14.  You play who you play.  I think it was Gunter's D line that relieved the Gunter secondary.

I remember early in the game thinking, "really?  That guy was open?" After about 3 or 4 pretty darts up the middle, and I'm like, damn.  This might be a long game.

He was shifty back there too.  In every other game, that was 6-8 sacks.  Canadian's QB was very very (not enough very's) at avoiding the hit/sack, and for the most part, it was a gasp in the Gunter crowd when we had him and missed.  And sure enough, he more often than not hit a wide open man (with a pretty dart) Anyway - great QB.  I don't know if it was scheme-related or secondary-related, but he had guys to throw to.  That seemed to be shut down in the second half, so probably scheme related.

If he was injured, it didn't show from where I was sitting.  I know you're not using that as an excuse; I'm just saying - damn good QB.  Period.  Gunter did a good job of reeling that in a bit.

As I said before, #35 was always a target that made me nervous.  If I didn't know how football works, I would have assumed he snuck on the field off the sidelines after the ball was snapped.  I don't know his stats while I'm making this comment, but I assume he had some great yards after catch stats throughout the season.  Great option for a QB in trouble.

Anyway.  I'm still talking about it because of the respect I have for the Canadian football program.  Great program - and honestly for me - the classiest bunch of kids we play all year - every year.  I know most people miss this kind of thing, but after the game, the Gunter players lined up to stand at attention to Canadian's school song.  We learned that from Canadian - when they did it for us back in 2016 when the whole team lined up and faced our crowd while we played our school song. Absolute class.  Looks like Gunter learned that display of class from Canadian.

Another one in the books.  And from the VERY recent release from the UIL regarding cutoffs for classifications, it looks like we have two more years in the same class.  Let's get two more state semifinal games out of it.

35 (Flowers) is a stud. We’ve been able to line him and Neumeier (11) up on the same side of the field all year and create mismatches.

I feel bad for Cavalier. He did not look like himself this game. A large part was do to the Gunter defense. However, he was under throwing almost every ball. He was not injured, but was sick. That’s the only thing I can contribute it too (on the plays he wasn’t running for his life!).

We will be good next year, but I believe it will be a down year as well (as compared to what we are used to). The line will be more experienced, but having to replace 4,35, and 11 will be tough.

I love the fact that y’all stand for the songs now. Our coaches have always had our kids do it win or lose. I think it’s a great way to show respect to the other team!

always enjoy the conversations with you!

I think Canadian was not as tough as the media portrayed.  Very good team fo sure but not as good as years past.

In Canadians defense, Cavalier was sick, and RB1 was out. Had to move best wide receiver to running back.

That said, we still would not have won. I think it ends up being a 14 point Gunter win. Our line was flat out bullied last night, the likes of which I have never seen.

This is the best Gunter team I have seen. They have diversified the offense and put the entire defense in conflict.

The recievers were open all night. The offense ran very basic plays. They didn't run anything that has worked all season. Coaches didn't get the ball to none of our playmakers to make plays. I hate it for the boys. Defensive effort and coaching was not very good tonight.

I was more shocked with the defense. I did not see all of the game, but saw most of it. From what I remember, 90% of Tide’s plays were the same 4 over and over.

I lived in Newton for eleven years, and am familiar with the area. Newton County is a humongous county it is narrow but very long. If I’m not mistaken the School District is as big as the County. No growth at all in Newton Proper, but the county no doubt is growing some. The area is mostly Timber Company dominated, so not much growth possible. I believe there has been some talk of Newton dropping down. Most of the Residents commute to Beaumont, Orange, and Port Arthur. It was a good place to live. Good people.

That’s awesome. I was not insinuating anything! Over here, towns are 30-40 minutes apart. Looking at a map they are every 10 miles out east.

So its the Collin County All Star team vs. The Amarillo ISD Please move to our small town team.

    should be interesting.

Show me on the doll where we hurt you……we have had 1 kid move in from Amarillo a few years back, and he grew up in Canadian. I believe every kid with the exception of one, has been in Canadian since at least 7th grade, and 95% have been here since 1st.

    try harder….

Timpson  and Garrison best 2 teams in 2 A.

I could be wrong, but I think you have to put Stratford up there. Stingy defense. To me, they are the type of team built to give Timpson a game. Big Line, 6-3 235 QB who is a load to bring down, and are perfectly fine taking 3-4 yards per carry.

Do I think they beat Timpson, probably not. But they can slow the game down and limit possessions.

All that said, they may lose to Tolar and that point will be completely moot……🤷🏻‍♂️

Yeah, the three towns I named (Celina, Prosper, and Frisco are all north up 289.  Gunter is still it's own town.  You can leave in any cardinal direction and know you've left town.  10 miles north to Celina.  Another 10 or so to Prosper.  Another 10 or so to Frisco.  Right now, there's still nothing between Gunter and Celina for 5-6 miles.  Once you get to Celina, you're in the city from there to Dallas.  There's no empty space anymore once you hit Celina.  Gunter still has the same single red light they added when I was in high school or maybe a little after, and you can still "leave town".  Once you get to Celina, unless you're heading pretty far south of Dallas, you're not leaving the city for a while.  There's still a nice few miles of country between Celina and Gunter to the north for now.

I started this talk, but I didn't mean for it to get into that crap, so this is on me I guess.  Gunter is growing - and the rate is gonna keep increasing because that's the direction of the growth. That's what I meant.  Nobody is denying that.  My only reason for even mentioning it was that the Gunter/Canadian matchup might not have many more chances to come to fruition; not bring the haters out of the woodwork.  We are all well aware of the growth.  Sorry I brought it up.  Football.  Not AT ALL directed at you, THEHARDAWAY.

No worries here bud. I’ve sad many times on here I think the “talk” is BS. You play who you play. Complaining about school size is a loser mentality. Both teams play much larger schools every year anyways.

For a community that’s growing pretty fast is hard to believe it was only a 10 student growth

The area is growing, but that doesn’t necessarily mean Gunter is. Their numbers are in line (with growth) with what TEA showed for last realignment. Last years class was big, and this years senior class is small. They aren’t accepting transfers, so unless growth is in the district, or move ins, won’t change that much. I’d be curious to see Gunters district square miles vs East Texas. It seems like there is a town every 10 miles over there.

Canadian is opposite. This years senior class is small, but 10th grade is big, and so is the 8th. If we stay up, that is what will cause it. Every class 7th and below is 55 or less, with some in low 40’s.

Gunter's only gonna get bigger.  They are right down the pipeline of growth.  Frisco, Prosper, Celina, now Gunter.  I believe Gunter turned in 364.  The last cutoff was 359 (360 bumped you to D1).

What I understand is the new cutoffs won't be announced until Feb, but the trend would put the new cutoff above Gunter's 364, so looks like we have one cycle left at D2 if that trend continues.  Perhaps 3 more Gunter/Canadian semifinal games?

    Hopefully so!!

Ok, so just for the heck of it, I went back and looked at all my Gunter vs Canadian predictions.  Not in depth, but just the overall prediction.  It's pretty incredible we have built up quite a history in such a short amount of time - especially considering you have to make it to the state semi-final for this game to happen.

    YEAR   PREDICTION           ACTUAL

    2016    24-21 Gunter          44-34 Gunter

    2017    37-31 Gunter          56-27 Gunter

    2018    35-33 Gunter         17-7 Canadian

    2019    33-27 Canadian     27-20 Gunter

    2020    43-28 Canadian     33-6 Canadian

    2022    39-32 Gunter         21-20 Gunter

I got the winner right 4 out of 6 times, so basically just a game over .500.  A lot of those games could have gone either way, so let's just say I flip a coin and throw numbers out there and pretend to know what I'm doing.  There have only really been two convincing wins I'd say.  The 2017 56-27 Gunter win (I believe they got out to a 35-7 lead and sort of traded scores from there on out.  The other convincing win was the 2020 33-6 Canadian win (the only Canadian/Gunter game I've missed - I watched a stream I'm pretty sure).  Overall, Gunter has the slight edge in average points per matchup - - outscoring Canadian by an average of 25-23.  After this week's game, Gunter and Canadian will have played 70% of a regular season's worth of state semifinal games in 8 years.  We've only missed playing once in the semifinal game in that span.

Anyway, in this one - considering all games played :

Gunter is averaging 60.4 ppg against defenses that allow 30.5 on average (29.9 more).  Gunter is holding teams that score 34.7 on average to 6.8 per game (27.9 fewer) for a total swing of +57.8.

Canadian is averaging 60.6 ppg against defenses that allow 26.9 on average (33.8 more).  Canadian is holding teams that score 29.4 on average to 14.2 per game (15.2 fewer) for a total swing of +49.0.

Based on this, I get a 45-37 Gunter win.

    Taking Gunter's best 3 "swing" games vs Canadian's 3 best, I get a Gunter 59-40 win.

Taking each teams worst swing games, I get a Canadian 35-32 win.

    Gunter's best 3 vs Canadian's worst 3, and I get 59-24 Gunter.

    Canadian's 3 best vs Gunter's 3 worst, and I get 51-32 Canadian.

Considering only district and playoff games, I get Gunter in a 48-37 win.

Considering only playoff games, I get Gunter in a 48-39 win.

Only considering games by each team against opponents who allow fewer than 24 points per game, I get 49-33 Gunter.

Only considering games by each team against opponents who score more than 35 per game, I get 47-26 Gunter.

Overall average of all these arbitrary ways of looking at this game and cherry-picking this or that, and you end up in basically the same place as you would just considering the whole season for both teams.

I'm going to take Gunter in this one, 45-35, but because I don't know if this matchup will ever happen again, I'm going 44-34.  Perhaps ending it like we started it.  There's a chance Canadian moves down and Gunter moves up.  I guess it depends on where they draw the new lines, but this incredible run by both teams - all these state semifinal matchups - could be coming to an end.  Though, I've heard Canadian might be staying up one more cycle.  Can't remember who I heard that from. Or we might already know.  I've been looking at so many different things, I've probably confused myself. Either way - good luck to both teams.  I expect another good one.

Side note, according to Pigskin, in all of 11-man football (2A-6A), Gunter is #1 in average margin of victory.  Canadian is #3.

Thanks bud. We will stay up this cycle, and possibly the next. After that will be small forever!

Who was stud running back for the 2019 and 2022 championship teams?  Gunter has somwhow put up 845 points this year.  Another way to put it is that we don depend on one stud running back.  The ball gets spread around, by design.  The QB had over 200 yards because that is how the option read.  He is a stud though, all 145 pounds.

2022 y’all had Bennet. He was a stud and game changer on offense and defense. Also Hellman at Flex that was a stud.  Not arguing with you, just saying y’all did have some dudes last year.
