He will be a lot bigger this year. J Surratt is a very special player and will have many D1 offers after the 2024 season.
look at his stats as a sophomore, he only needed a few more yards to break the single season record at Carthage. Just wait until the 2024 Dawgs trot out on the field. All those sophomores and Juniors will be bigger, stronger, and battle tested. The seniors are a good group and lead the 2024 Dawg.
I am always excited to see what the Dawgs will look like each new year.
But in 2024 we know how much talent they bring back at all positions.
Let’s Go Dawgs 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆 and hopefully in 2024 number 🏆
God Bless Coaches, Players, and Fans.

He probably won't get any taller. He isn't a true sophomore either.

He is old enough to be a Jr.

  3. Good luck to whoever it is! The days of having an abundance of 250 to 300lb linemen, and 4x100 track guys in the backfield are over with.

They should have spread it out with several of those teams they have had over the past 20 years or so.

My opinion, but I've watched the local small schools closely for a long time. Most of them have dropped way off or are dropping.

  4. He might try his hand at a big D1 program. I think he could get hired for big bucks.

I bet his son plays golf in college and not football.  You almost have to be big in stature to be a D1 pocket passer. 6 foot 2 and 220lb or better.

  5. I've said for 4 years now that Bussey would be a slot receiver at the next 2 levels.

So far in the All Star game that's what he is doing. And he looks great.

  6. They won't be like they were from the early 90's until about 2017 or so any time soon. Probably never again.

Like most small towns these days. People leave for various reasons and take a lot of the athletic genes with them.

It was one heck of a run though! Football and basketball!

  7. I agree with a lot you said about how small towns come together in the face of adversity, but that could be said for America in general. Divided but willing to help out when tragedy or catastrophe shows up.

I'm happy for Gilmer. Watched it from the front row 50 yard lline. It was a great game. One of the best from this years championships.

15 teams had “an easy week of preparation” prior to contributing to their part in the top offense in the state.

1st half over and Bellville ran 2 plays outside the tackles. One a TD pass and an one an interception. . Edit. They scored again. Between the tackles.

Well, Liberty Hill has won a couple of state championships as well as multiple district championships and deep runs in the playoffs using that "civil war era" offense at the 5A level !!!

If you are a good coach you have to match the style of offense with the players/talent level you have to work with. There is absolutely nothing worse that watching a team try to run a spread type offense without the players to run it properly. The Slot T and its many variables are extremely difficult offenses to stop. They can successfully burn the play clock, thus limiting the other teams possessions. You can have the fastest, most talented team but if your offense is sitting on the sideline watching the "four yards and a cloud of dust" offense march down the field, you will lose.

They aren't hard to stop at all if you have a decent defense.

It's much harder to stop when the athletes are spread out.

When they are stacked in tight 2/3rds of the defensive coordinators worries are eliminated.

It's actually an easy week of preparation. It's just a matter of getting man handled or not.

No doubt, "3 yds and a cloud of dust offense" that has scored more points and gained more yards than any team in the state including Gilmer. Hopefully they can hobble in and make it a game.

Line up two teams that are fairly matched in size and skill, and it's 3 yards and a cloud of dust. With way more injury probabilities and not much fun to watch.

If you "have experience with both", you would not be referring to the Slot T as "ancient" and you would know that the majority of the plays are not "up the gut".

I've been involved with the straight T, Wing T, and slot T.

I just watched Bellville warm up, and it's an old school style of play based on running between the tackles. So yea, up the gut.

I know you troll here a lot. You were the same guy that said Benny Smith would never see the field is Carhage.

He was first team all district and made several plays throughout the year.

Like I told you when you were trolling me back early in the season. The kid is gifted. Just wait until he learns how to play.

No doubt it can be effective. If a team is good enough to win state titles at the 4 and 5a levels I would wager that they have plenty of enough talent to spread it out.

For one, they would have a great O line, and that's the hardest part. If you can get the big boys up front there are plenty of people that can run, catch and throw.

That's not always the case in the smaller classifications.

I'm actually watching Bellville warmup right now and they ran a few pass plays. They even lined up in the spread and ran some plays.

I can promise you, they are capable.

Ancient or not, nothing like seeing a team just exert their dominance on a team in the trenches. With the right athletes and precise execution, the wing t / slot t is fun to watch. A win is a win regardless of the offense.

I agree about the part in the trenches. That can be accomplished no matter the scheme.

I respectfully disagree about the style of offense. I have experience with both.

The modern offense is safer (proven fact) and way more fun.

I think the up the gut stuff is relevant to football, and should be taught, but not the main ingredient. Especially in 4a. I prefer a mix.

Winning is fun…Offensive scheme doesn’t matter at that point… I’m sure all 3 RBs that have 1800 more yards or more a piece are really just having a terrible time

Like I said, its impressive to make it this far in 4a with that ancient offense.

Running the spread is WAY more fun all around. I know about both styles first hand.

I do enjoy the big guys in the trenches as well. Physical defense with good tackling, and offensive lines that are well coached are fun to watch as well.

I'm just not a fan of the 3 yard and a cloud of dust concepts. Spread it out and let your athletes move around in space. It's safer to play that way (which is a proven fact) and it's more fun in general.

  15. It's very impressive for a 4a team to make it this far running an offense that came from the Civil War era. Bellville must have an incredible group of kids!

It's a shame they don't get to play a more modern version of the game. The modern offense is much safer, and way more fun to play and watch.

As for this game Gilmer is no doubt battle tested! They have faced some very good teams, and seem to be playing good at the right time.

I don't know a lot about Bellville other than they are big and run an ancient offense.

I'm picking Gilmer for a solid win. Their speed will eventually break it open.

Tolar just had not seen anyone like Timpson all year and it inflated their egos. They really thought they were just going to blast Timpson.

Timpson on the other hand has been in a ton of wars versus quality opponents. Daingerfield, Garrison (twice), Ganado, I’d even say Beckville gives this Tolar team problems. And that’s just THIS YEAR. What about all the wars Timpson was in LAST YEAR? The Refugio game?

Tolar really ran into that real deal tonight.

No doubt. All those quality opponents for Timpson over the last 2 or 3 years payed off big in this year's run.

It helped the players and the coaches finally put it all together. In my opinion over the last month or so Timpson has played some of the best 2a ball I've ever seen.
