  1. Since we, Rusk, we on the receiving end of back to back smack downs by these two teams I’ll give my two cents.

Van will run the ball at will against Center. Their Oline is huge and won’t have an issue with Centers front 7/8. Van will have to be methodical and keep the ball away from Center. If they can do that they will win.
If Center gets the ball on offense 8 or more times they will win. Van might stop them once or twice but they will score the majority of times they get the chance and the more times Van is on defense the better Centers offense will get.
IF either team scores 50 Center will win the game.

What’s the ceiling for this Rusk group. Hard to believe they’ll challenge Carthage, but I guess you never know. What are y’all’s thoughts?

Rusk is a young team. We won’t challenge Carthage but could be anywhere from 2nd through 4th in District depending on how the kids progress. The QB is a Sophomore and could be special. We have two good RB’s with exceptional speed. The defense is much improved from the last few years. They are very active and get to the ball in a hurry. Our issue is with numbers. We can’t put our best 11 on the field without several guys playing both ways. If we can manage PT and keep kids fresh we could be a tough draw in the playoffs. Depending on seeding out of district the ceiling is probably 2 or 3 rounds.

For the love of the game. And to be a kid while he still can. He's gonna miss that dearly and dont even know it yet. And do you know how fast a quarter of a million gets blown now days? Especially by young adults. NIL deals got folks bugging.....let that man be a kid one more year. No worries, not a care in the world.....playing for the love of the game.....cuz a year from now....all that doesn't exist anymore. Every day he puts that helmet and those pads on, it won't be just for fun anymore....it will be another day building a resume just like you and me.....his will be way more scrutinized than we'll ever be by experts in our field, though. Nothing is given to you and never take anything for granted. Tomorrow isn't guaranteed.....live today. And for the love of God.....be a kid while you can. Take it from any of us....adulting is hell.

I completely agree with what you’re saying but unfortunately some of these high caliber recruits don’t get the luxury of being a kid even in HS.

Whether it’s real or perceived they feel the pressure to take care of their families financially. To most of us NIL money is a substantial amount but for some of these kids it is life changing.

I don’t know this young man’s situation but if he severely damages his knee or has any traumatic injury these power house universities will turn their back on him in an instant.

NIL is slowly squeezing the love of the game concept out of HS sports. I’m not completely against NIL but there is definitely a price to be paid and I’m afraid it’s going to be too steep.

No need to hate on the Riders just because y'all got whooped tonight. Center probably will be too, but comparing Rusk, Center and Van vs Carthage is apples and oranges. Carthage is on a whole another level than most 4A  teams in the state.

Wow, I’m not hating at all.
Sorry, y’all go out and put it on them next week.

The panola watchman actually wrote this with seriousness that this will be the toughest district game to date for Carthage. The game determined that was a lie.

I bet it’s the truth. I said before and I still believe Rusk is the 2nd best team in the district. This game just shows the gap between Carthage and everyone else.
If Carthage loses a game this year Surratt should be fired. Just saying

  6. We may get shutout in the game but we will NOT get shutout in the vote.

I just want my Eagles to force the Carthage starters to play into the 4th quarter.
Regardless of last weeks loss I still believe we are the 2nd best team in this district.
Center might score but Carthage will score every time they have the ball.

Carthage might not score every time they have the ball against Van but Van will not score on Carthage.

We, Rusk, will score at least once and we will stop Carthage from scoring at least once. I’m not predicting a competitive game but it will be the most competitive game Carthage will have before the playoffs.

  7. Congrats to Van. They played mistake free football, which I expected.

McCown did something to his hand right before the half and he was unable to throw the ball with his normal accuracy or zip.
Defense played well enough to win the ballgame but the two huge errors on the punts was too much to be overcome. Credit to Van for capitalizing and scoring.
When we stopped them the first possession of the 2nd half, scored our first possession and stopped them again. I thought we were about to take control. Instead we just fell apart and made mistake after mistake. Van is too good of a team for us to beat without playing error free football.

What sucks is we can come out next week and play our best game ever and we still won’t win.

We looked solid against Center. I don’t know the exact passing and rushing yardage they entered averaging 487 yards a game we held them to 326 total yards. The Dixon kid RB was averaging 165 a game and I’d be surprised if he broke 100. Center did have a WR go out early in the game so that probably contributed to our success. The 35 points scored was their lowest total on the year. All in all we’ve  played well on defense this year. We are an overall better team than last year.

Not that it matters but Dixon had 78 yards on 22 carries.

Anyone know what Rusks defense is like? Can that stop the run? Good secondary?

  10. Our offense put us in a bind a few times with turnovers but the defense definitely earned their keep tonight.

Center definitely has the skill kids to score points but I wasn’t real sure what they were trying to do on offense. We limited the RB and it seemed to get y’all out of sorts. Personally I would have run the QB until we stopped him.

Good game and good luck moving forward.
