Congratulations to the Buckeyes. Have done a great job of turning things around since losing to Pleasant Grove. Best of luck next week against another team that has turned things around after a tough start. I’m sure this loss will provide plenty of incentive to the young players from Carthage as they work to start yet another long winning streak. The last 3 losses by this program were followed by winning streaks of 40 (2016-2018), 41 (2019-2021), and 29 (2022-2023). So it can be done…get your heads up and go back to work, Bulldogs. You have many fans who look forward to watching you go after it with all you’ve got.

What were the PG QB’s rushing stats last week?

Sophomores start at QB & RB. The backup RB (with a senior out again with an injury) who scored the winning TD last week is a sophomore, as is a TE/receiver who has been a big contributor while playing in certain packages. One of the 2 sophomores who start at OLB also plays some offense as a TE/receiver in some packages. The other starting sophomore OLB is either the leading or 2nd leading tackler on the team. Two sophomores also start in the secondary. In addition, a talented sophomore WR has missed most of the season with an injury. Other sophomores are backups who have gotten limited action before games became blowouts and a great deal more time after games became decided.

If indeed Carthage moves to Region 3 the next 2 years, perhaps these two teams will resume playing non-district games against each other. After last week’s game, it would be mighty interesting.

My research this morning reveals that you are correct. Does anyone remember the score of the 2021 game in Carthage? I attended but don’t remember the score.

Carthage also played in the Division I playoffs in 2007 (Coach Surratt’s 1st year) and 2012. Lost to eventual (and defending) state champion Liberty Hill in the former and in the state semifinals to El Campo in the latter.

Carthage averages 6 TDs (43 points) a game. Gilmer averages giving up 5 TDs (35 points) a game. That seems to indicate that Carthage will score at least its average Friday.

He did an amazing job in the 2016 playoffs at WR after playing almost exclusively on defense in the regular season.

If Carthage is 1 of the 2 teams playing at The Star, look for an agonizingly close game. That seems to be the only type of game CHS plays there.

The winner of this game will meet the winner of the Glen Rose-Canyon West Plains game. Canyon is more than 500 miles from either Carthage or Gilmer. Where would that semifinal game be played if Canyon West Plains wins Region 1? Wichita Falls?

In the bi-district win over Liberty-Eylau, 8 RBs had carries for Carthage. I believe only 1 of them is a senior.

Their RB has DI offers, just as the QB does. He ran exceptionally hard the few times he got to carry the ball. I join you in wondering why he didn’t get more carries…and why the big junior TE, who already has many DI offers, wasn’t thrown to more.
