Thinking back to last year, I didn't really know what to think after the Carthage game. I mean, going toe-to-toe with Carthage usually means you're pretty good... but Carthage was so young last year (and us too), I didn't know if it was a "Carthage" Carthage team or an 8-4 "rebuilding" Carthage team. And then the next week we had to kick a last second FG to beat Gilmer 24-23.... a Gilmer team that gave up 71 to Chapel Hill the week before. Still didn't know if we were any good. At the end of the day, Carthage went 13-1 only losing to Gilmer who won a State Championship and Chapel Hill played in a State Championship (and we whipped their butts in week 10). East Texas 4A was pretty good last year.

Interesting, as your posts usually are. But as far as CHS possibly looking at being an 8-4 team after last season’s opener… other than a loss in the playoffs (which of course did happen), one would have been hard pressed to come up with 3 other teams on the schedule that could have possibly beaten Coach Surratt’s young team (even without the 20-20 hindsight we now have).

I wish there was a way they both lose , however Kilgore probably gets the W!  Should be a close game!

Season openers are often hard to predict; I certainly don’t know who will win this one. However, I do know that it has been a very long time since Carthage lost a game at home.

Cuff slinging that ball to Paddie and others, oh my gosh.
What we have to remember when talking about Carthage competing in larger classifications is teams like Longview very rarely have a QB like Carthage seems to have every single year.

    How does this happen?  SURRATT.

Sometimes there are very specific circumstances that can drive a team to greatness.  Carthage has that in Surratt & Co, while some larger schools just have a bunch of athletes.
Will say it again and don’t really care what people think…….if Longview had Surratt they’d have nine state championships and not us.

Shoot, with Longview’s amount of athletes they’d be Aledo of the East just in a larger classification.

The “others” Cuff slung the ball to included Montrel Hatten, who is now at Oregon State.

Carthage has had plenty of speed in the secondary and sometimes very elite speed in the secondary, but there again not every year.

Hicks who was an absolute speed demon went to Oklahoma State on a track scholarship, made La Vega look like they were running in sand.

Even the DeSoto’s, etc don’t have guys who run like Hicks and definitely not every year.

But, I do agree with the gist of what you’re saying.

Last year, our secondary team speed wasn’t great, not bad just not as good as we’ve had before.

Hicks eventually transferred from the Okie State track team to LSU’s.

    I dont think Carthage gets top 4 in Districts 5, 10, 11, 13, 19, 22, 23, 25, 27, 29

Assuming this means you think Carthage gets a playoff spot in all of the other 6A districts, that sounds very impressive to me. 22 out of the 32 6A districts is more than 2/3 by my math.

Hamshire Fannett 14...Kilgore 6...Final.....Great job Kilgore especially being your first appearance....just ran out of gas towards the end. The 26-25 OT win the game before burned a lot of whatever fuel they had left in them....overall, great showing and cant wait until August!!

Who was the opponent in the overtime game?

No need to rethink, right now on paper I'd slightly lean to Kilgore's defense

Splitting hairs but Carthage brings back eight starters from a defense that allowed 13.85 ppg a year ago

Kilgore brings back eight starters from a defense that allowed 16.43 ppg a year ago....

Pretty close, but I think Kilgore's competition week in and week out was better last year as well...the one common opponent they played was Giilmer.....Kilgore allowed 23 and Carthage allowed 47...

We’ll all have a chance to see both of them play on the same field in Carthage in Week 1.

Soph gives up his only hit with 2 outs in the 7th…….Surratt might try to talk him into baseball only. 😁

Does anyone out there know how many games the sophomore, Cade Ross, pitched in this season and/or how many innings he pitched?

The good news is tennison didn't want to play quarterback last year and is very happy now he can play defense full time

This is hard to figure. Tennison appeared to this Carthage fan to be an outstanding high school QB last December in the regional championship game. Not very many kids who can play that position that well don’t want to play it.  I would guess he’s looking ahead to college ball, but he should enjoy his senior year of high school football IMHO. There will be plenty of time for college football later.

#1 for Gilmer best individual performance I've witnessed in a while.

I'm not sure  about week in and week out but today he looked like the best back in 4a.

He was definitely the X factor.

I repeat: is he a junior (as indicated in today’s telecast) or a senior (as shown in the program for last week’s Glen Rose game)?

  11. Congratulations to the Buckeyes. Have done a great job of turning things around since losing to Pleasant Grove. Best of luck next week against another team that has turned things around after a tough start.

I’m sure this loss will provide plenty of incentive to the young players from Carthage as they work to start yet another long winning streak. The last 3 losses by this program were followed by winning streaks of 40 (2016-2018), 41 (2019-2021), and 29 (2022-2023). So it can be done…get your heads up and go back to work, Bulldogs. You have many fans who look forward to watching you go after it with all you’ve got.

And I thought Carthage had a couple of sophomore linemen starting, Am I wrong on that?

Sophomores start at QB & RB. The backup RB (with a senior out again with an injury) who scored the winning TD last week is a sophomore, as is a TE/receiver who has been a big contributor while playing in certain packages. One of the 2 sophomores who start at OLB also plays some offense as a TE/receiver in some packages. The other starting sophomore OLB is either the leading or 2nd leading tackler on the team. Two sophomores also start in the secondary. In addition, a talented sophomore WR has missed most of the season with an injury.

Other sophomores are backups who have gotten limited action before games became blowouts and a great deal more time after games became decided.
