Thinking Crosby in another close one.
-
Both teams were bringing the heavy lumber last night. Very, very physical game. I think Texas High wanted a slow it down, low scoring affair and they got it. The people complaining about TX High’s lack of passing in the play calling - Crosby was bringing serious heat on those drop backs. The pocket just never held for Texas High. And look, the Texas High running game just couldn’t get it going. People look at points per game and immediately think Crosby’s defense is soft. #20 for Crosby is a tough and nimble runner. I feel like they do need to feed him the ball more as well. He is basically unheralded bc they get the ball to 14 and 4 a lot, and QB-10 is the first option running. Although they can beat you a lot of ways, when they get Jones going - look out. #20 and #10 are not easy to tackle.

5A D1 R2 Semi-Final: Longview vs Denton Ryan

Ryan by 20. Ryan is beatable but it won’t be LV. -
Crosby. The one area where I thought they *might* be sort of average was at RB. But #20 Jones had a break out game and really showed some toughness. He’s not easy to tackle and catches the ball well. They’ve had some real playmakers at RB. A&M is going to have some matchup issues on defense. The Coogs are so good at spreading the ball around and really didn’t lean on their best playmakers against Marshall.

Hats off to Texas High. Really dominated the Stingarees. Great win and really rolling. PNG vs Texas High will be fun. They aren’t one dimensional like TC and can sling it around. Why and how Texas City beat PNG in the regular season puzzles me but these are 16, 17 and 18 year olds were writing about. And with Ennis, Highland Park, and Montgomery losing - no one seems safe.

Texas City in a very close one. I feel like this one could go either way though. Texas City was kind of a paper tiger this year - they had a good defense stats wise and then Crosby hung 57 on them. They had zero problems with Barbers Hill though. And they really held most teams to their season lows. These two teams are weirdly similar. Orange and black. Run heavy. Known for defensive, lower scoring games. Both have Texas in their names. Gotta go with City over High, 21-13.

First time poster - enjoying this thread so let’s get back to talking some football on this one. Full disclosure - I’ve only seen Marshall on film and I’ve seen Crosby once in person and a few games on Texan Live. I don’t really have a dog in the hunt. Marshall is pretty salty on defense and has seen teams with speed. The Mavericks played tight with a really talented Longview squad that would be a slight favorite over Crosby. They tackle well, gap containment is solid, and their sideline to sideline speed is good. The defense is well-coached and plays assignment football. Marshall’s offense, on the other hand, is pedestrian at best highlighted by a couple of good receivers who have game breaking ability. O-line play is iffy and the running game disappears in long chunks. Lots of three and outs. Crosby is going to be a big step up in defense from Rudder but similar to the Lobos in athleticism. Crosby will probably tee off on D and they’ve got a physical and active front 4. #40 is a nightmare. They’ve got two kids who play both ways - #14 and #4. #14 is a ball hawk and has legit track speed and #4 never comes off the field. One thing that hasn’t been mentioned is how young the Cougars are. The QB, three starting receivers, and two starting o-linemen are juniors and the right tackle is listed as a sophomore. Only 4 seniors on offense. The QB Myles has something like 28 TDs and only two INTS and is really dangerous running the ball. The Cougars are also young on defense with a couple of juniors and a couple of sophomores playing a lot. Crosby was beat deep a lot against Barbers Hill so I feel like Marshall is going to have to take some shots down the field. Both teams actually have great kickers so that could come into play. Best guess here is Marshall could keep it close, but only if their offense finds some success - and I really don’t see that happening. Crosby is really tough up front and I see third and longs spelling bad times for Marshall’s QB. Crosby 34 Marshall 14.
